BELOIT, Kan. — Six Hutch Post area student-athletes will participate in the Kansas Eight-Man Football Association All-Star Game on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium on the campus of Beloit High School.

The Division I game will be played at 10 a.m. and the Division II game at 1:30 p.m.

Rosters were voted on and selected by member coaches of the KEMFA.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday approved the purchase of new playground equipment for Rice Park.

"One thing we did this time when we were selecting this playground equipment was we engaged some students at Wiley Elementary School," said Director of Parks and Facilities Justin Combs. "We went there twice. On our first trip to Wiley, I spent several minutes talking to them about playground equipment, about things like spinning and sliding and rocking and why it's important from a physiological standpoint, why it's important from a social standpoint, so really just educating them that playgrounds are more than just something fun to go play on. Then we took them on a tour. We went and played on playgrounds. We went to Rice Park. We had them play for 15 minutes and then we asked them a series of questions, had them write down their responses. Then we went to Carey Park, to one of our newer playgrounds in Carey Park, and did the same thing."

The kids then came back to the school and the staff had them draw pictures of their ideal playground.

"We took that feedback then and we engaged three vendors and took that feedback and said, these are the things the kids are looking for," Combs said. "Then we developed three concepts from that, so then we came back. After we got all those concepts back from the vendors, we came back to the kids with those three concepts. We reviewed benefits of play and playground equipment, and then we discussed the three options and actually had them vote."

Two of the concepts tied in the vote, but one of them had made a mistake in their bid that would have made it too expensive, so the recommendation came to the council for equipment from All-Inclusive Rec.

"This is a little bit of a unique color scheme for us," Combs said.&nbsp; "This was a color scheme they picked out. They loved purple. Purple was the one color they wanted. They wanted bright colors and purple. So we did plum and lime green."

The equipment will cost $139,194.20. It was approved unanimously.

Rice Park to get new playground equipment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday declared a portion of a downtown property blighted, but it's a good thing, because it is required for a grant process.

According to agenda documents, in 2019, Meredith and Nick Wolenhaupt purchased the historic Montgomery Ward building at 14 North Main. They seek to address significant issues with the building's upper floor, including leaking decorative windows and code violations in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. These problems have caused substantial damage to the original wood floor.

The Downtown Commercial Rehabilitation Program could help resolve these issues. The Wolenhaupts previously received a HEAL grant in 2023 from the Department of Commerce to address code and egress issues, enabling the use of the main floor and mezzanine spaces.

The South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) is preparing the CDBG Downtown Rehabilitation grant application and will manage the grant if awarded.

"Part of the grant is a follow up,"&nbsp;Meredith Wohlenhaupt told the council. "It's a continued relationship with SCKEDD. We currently have a relationship with Stephanie Marsh at SCKEDD and we do monthly reporting based on, not just financials, but activity at the building."

The council approved the declaration unanimously.

Grant process for downtown building can continue

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — New Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas is hitting the ground running when it comes to addressing the issues at 43rd and Halstead.

"Mary Grace and I have met with engineering staff to discuss that topic, among many others," Villegas said. "At that time, I did direct engineering staff to move forward with the warrant analysis for that intersection, in particular, and to also task JEO with looking at, is there a way to condense some of the study time that they may need? I think, factoring in some of the safety concerns that have happened, with the crashes that have been pointed out, instead of a month or two, does it need to be that long? At least, that will be something for JEO to look at."

He also had another idea for additional driver awareness on 43rd.

"A digital speed limit sign, say, you know, you're speed limit 35, then it clocks you as you're driving," Villegas said. "Just to bring some attention, have them place some along there."

The city already does that on East 30th as you travel west into town and the speed limit goes down from 55 to 45.

Villegas looking at 43rd and Halstead additional measures

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dillon Lecture Series has announced its remaining speakers for the 2024 season.

In addition to the previously announced Steven Ford (actor and son of former President Gerald Ford) on September 17, the 2024 Series has added Jerome Tang, head men’s basketball coach of Kansas State University on October 8.

Coach Tang, who was selected as the 2023 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to a 26-win season and its 13th trip to the Elite Eight in his inaugural season, recently completed his second season as the 25th head men's basketball head coach at Kansas State.

Tang is just the third coach in the program's history to be selected National Coach of the Year, joining Fred "Tex" Winter (who presented a 2003 Dillon Lecture) in 1958 and Jack Hartman in 1980, while he is the fourth head coach from a Big 12 institution to earn the honor from the Naismith Trophy. He was a candidate for nearly every other National Coach of the Year honor in 2022-23, including finishing as the runner-up for The Associated Press award. In addition, he was the consensus Big 12 Coach of the Year, earning the honor from both the league coaches and the AP.

June 4, 2024 — Ten delegates at the 2024 American Legion Boys State of Kansas were elected mayor of their respective Kansas Boys State city. High school students from across the State of Kansas are participating in the 2024 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas, which started on June 2 and ends Saturday, June 8, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This is the program’s 32nd consecutive session at KSU and 86th overall.

The Kansas Boys State program includes students who have just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall).

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. 

Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

Delegates elected as mayors of cities at Boys State of Kansas

LINDSBORG — In partnership with the McPherson County Special Education Cooperative (MCCSEC), Bethany College is excited to announce the launch of the Pathway to SPED scholarship program. This initiative addresses the critical shortage of special education teachers in McPherson County by providing substantial support and guaranteed employment opportunities to local students pursuing careers in this field.

The Pathway to SPED scholarship program offers $5,000 annually to each selected student. The program includes financial assistance, paraprofessional positions during college, and guaranteed teaching positions in McPherson County upon graduation. This comprehensive approach encourages students to enter the special education profession and remain within their local communities, strengthening the local educational workforce.

Gannon Mosher, a junior from Chapman, KS, and Ashlon Stanford, a senior from McPherson, KS, are the first recipients of this scholarship. Both are currently enrolled at Bethany College, pursuing elementary education degrees with special education endorsements.

The McPherson County Special Education Cooperative oversees special education across several school districts, including Smoky Valley, McPherson, Canton-Galva, Inman, and Moundridge. The partnership with Bethany College is a strategic response to the urgent need for special education teachers, highlighted by the Kansas State Department of Education's report of 418 vacant special education teaching positions in 2023.

Alan English, Education Department Chair at Bethany College, expressed his enthusiasm for the program: "The Pathway to SPED program between the McPherson Special Education County Cooperative and Bethany is among the most proactive, forward-thinking initiatives I've seen to address the local shortage in special education. I couldn't be more excited to help fill a vital need for our local school districts!"

Megan Ladenburger, Assistant Director of Special Education, added: "Given the shortage of special education teachers across the country, we knew that we had to think outside of the box to problem-solve within our area. There is something to be said about the opportunity to 'grow your own,' so what better way to do that than to provide our own McPherson County students with this amazing opportunity? The partnership built between Bethany College Teacher Education Department and the McPherson County Special Education Cooperative is going to allow some of our very own students across the county to not only get a college degree at a very low rate but also to secure a job within their community and be able to give back to their own."

Gannon Mosher, one of the scholarship recipients, shared his excitement: "I am thrilled to be honored with the Pathway to Special Education Scholarship from the McPherson County Special Education Cooperative. This opportunity allows me to stay in a community I deeply care about while pursuing my passion for special education, inspired by my experiences as a volunteer Special Olympics coach and my mother's dedication as a special education teacher."

Ashlon Stanford, the other scholarship recipient, echoed this sentiment: "I am honored to receive the Pathway to Special Education Scholarship from the McPherson Coop. This scholarship allows me to stay in McPherson, where I developed my passion for special education in high school and supports my goal of becoming a special education teacher. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Vice-Mayor Stacy Goss is having a public meeting on Wednesday that she'd like the public to attend.

"My goal is just to hear from people," Goss said. "I've put together an informal survey to help people tell me what their priorities are and what changes they'd like to see in the community. I have that posted on Facebook."

The meeting is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Rice Park Community Building.

Any temporary decorations left on gravesites will be discarded. If you have any decorations you would like to keep, please remove them by June 9. This does not include flowers in permanent vases.

Newton cemeteries plan post-holiday cleanup

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Les Mason, a state Representative from McPherson, died after suffering a brain aneurysm on Friday. He had been hospitalized in Wichita.

Mason had served in the Statehouse since 2014. He leaves behind a wife, Victoria.

Long-time retiring McPherson State Senator Rick Wilborn filed for Mason's seat before the deadline Monday. No Democrat has filed in the race in House District 73. Mason had already filed to run before his illness.

Governor Laura Kelly has announced that she will call a special session later this month, but has not done the official proclamation yet.

in accordance with Executive Order #20-30, Governor Laura Kelly has directed flags be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings, grounds, and facilities effective immediately until sundown on the day of interment in honor of Kansas House of Representatives Assistant Majority Leader Les Mason. Pipe replacement to close a section of Pretty Prairie Road

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Historic Fox Theatre's 2024 kids and classic summer movie series starts this week.

Josh Davies, Executive Director of Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre told Hutch Post about the selection process and how it works for each film in the kids and classic series.&nbsp;

"So basically I look at the films that are available from the last say 100 years of film making and the time the Fox has been open and try to pick out things that I think that the audience will really enjoy," Davies said. "Whether it be for the historic value or the sentimental value or seeing it on a big screen so that leads to several different avenues of all the movies that are out there which is a huge amount and of course we do take requests. A lot of people will send us or email us movies that they want to see and I always take that into consideration."&nbsp;

Cars is the first movie in the lineup for the kids series and Mary Poppins is the first in the classic series. Cars will play at the Fox on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Thursday at 10 a.m. Mary Poppins will play on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Development Administrator Penny Bettles said seeing a classic film at a historic venue is a whole different experience than seeing it in a movie theater.&nbsp;

"Yes, we don't have the reclining seats but the whole aesthetic of the building, the atmosphere, the whole experience is different and there's nothing comparable I don't think," Bettles said.&nbsp; "Not to mention, the prices are very affordable."

It's $4 a movie for the kids summer movie series or $16 for a summer movie pass. Classic movies are $5 per movie or $45 for a movie pass. There are eight movies in the kids series and 16 in the classic film series.&nbsp;

 </figure>EMMIE BOESE&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Historic Fox Theatre's 2024 kids and classic summer movie series starts this week.Josh Davies, Executive Director of Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre told Hutch Post about the selection process and how it works for each film in the kids and classic series.&nbsp;"So basically I look at the films that are available from the last say 100 years of film making and the time the Fox has been open and try to pick out things that I think that the audience will really enjoy," Davies said. "Whether it be for the historic value or the sentimental value or seeing it on a big screen so that leads to several different avenues of all the movies that are out there which is a huge amount and of course we do take requests. A lot of people will send us or email us movies that they want to see and I always take that into consideration."&nbsp;Cars is the first movie in the lineup for the kids series and Mary Poppins is the first in the classic series. Cars will play at the Fox on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Thursday at 10 a.m. Mary Poppins will play on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp; Development Administrator Penny Bettles said seeing a classic film at a historic venue is a whole different experience than seeing it in a movie theater.&nbsp;"Yes, we don't have the reclining seats but the whole aesthetic of the building, the atmosphere, the whole experience is different and there's nothing comparable I don't think," Bettles said.&nbsp; "Not to mention, the prices are very affordable."It's $4 a movie for the kids summer movie series or $16 for a summer movie pass. Classic movies are $5 per movie or $45 for a movie pass. Entrepreneur Navigator hired at StartUp Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A project that has closed a portion of a major Hutchinson street is continuing forward.

"The water line near the roundabout on Severance and 23rd is being worked on, said Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast. "We have hired a contractor to do some of that work. I believe the parts are in. It should be done, I believe by the end of June, and that's what we're telling folks but we hope it'll be sooner than that."

The storm cleanup also still continues in the city, though getting the limbs to the two areas where they are being collected is still the homeowner's responsibility.

"They're still open," Fast said. "You can bring your branches to the east parking lot of the Sports Arena and also down at Carey Park we have a little area there on South Plum. It's an issue. We have to balance the amount of services that we can provide with you know the amount of taxes that folks pay and there are certain expectations. I struggle a little bit with you know do we come pick branches up all over town? Is that something that should be expected of us? I think in this situation we've handled it correctly. I think we've tried to help in in the ways that we can."

The City of Hutchinson in partnership with Reno County Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), will have a clean up day on June 8.

Individuals and groups of volunteers will be needed to help with tree limb and brush removal for homeowners unable to do these tasks.

Mayor: Projects, storm recovery continue

GOESSEL, Kan. — On June 9, the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) Kansas Unit will dedicate its new cabinet shop, located at 604 E. Main Street, Goessel, Kansas from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A first-of-its-kind MDS initiative, the shop is already crafting and distributing kitchen cabinets to more than 85 volunteer-built homes across the U.S. annually.

The cabinet shop, which has recently expanded its warehouse, produces full sets of hardwood cabinets. The cost savings is about $3,000 per cabinet set compared to a purchased set.

Not only is the cabinet shop saving money—it is a model of local volunteer innovation and engagement for the nation.

Dedication day will include tours of the cabinet shop and warehouse plus a fundraising concert by September River, a family band featuring Jude and Doug Krehbiel and their daughter Stefanie (Krehbiel) Giffin. 

September River is based in central Kansas and their music incorporates elements of bluegrass, gospel, blues, acoustic rock, Irish, and folk. The concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. Please bring your lawn chairs.

The MDS Storm Encounter trailer will also be on hand for those who want to experience a simulated tornado—then see how MDS volunteers restore hope in communities.

MDS Cabinet shop dedication is Sunday

The&nbsp; Fiesta at Our Lady of Guadalupe in South Hutchinson is this weekend, June 8 and 9. They are back to a Saturday and Sunday event.

"It's a Saturday and Sunday event, with all of the activities that we have had before," said Father Eric Weldon. "We're going to have King Midas, the band, again on Saturday evening, with Mexican food throughout and closing the night with fireworks. Of course there's a beer garden. Then on Sunday, we'll have our Mexican food throughout the day, we'll have folkloric dancers and also some Mexican singers, Mexican food and we'll finish up the day with raffle drawings."

The raffle drawings have a little something for everyone.

"We have two types," Father Weldon said. "We have the cash raffle, which is one ticket and then we have individual raffle prizes. Cash raffle is $5000, $2500 and $1000. That is really good. We also have individual raffles, where you can just buy your ticket and put it in front of the prize that you want, such as a Chiefs package, K-State, KU packages, a golf outing, patio sets. We even have one prize that is all gift cards and food items all over the city of Hutchinson. That was really popular last year. People like that a lot."

All events are at the church at 612 South Maple in South Hutchinson.

2024 Fiesta in South Hutchinson is this weekend

EMMIE BOESE Hutch Post HAVEN, Kan. —The Haven City Council hosted a public hearing on Monday night on the&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/3a514d2e-a392-4838-a444-dea17e47b2d5">potential expansion of Haven Steel Products Inc. and the use of industrial revenue bonds for the project.</a> The council heard from several people in attendance on the project including Vice President Tom O’Brien of Haven Steel, Lauren Storm of Greater Hutch and bond attorney Dominic L. Eck of Gilmore Bell.&nbsp; The council agreed after much discussion on the project to have their legal team look over all information regarding the expansion before their next council meeting. Discussion and presentation at the meeting involved a cost benefit analysis of the expansion.&nbsp; &nbsp;"What I would recommend in that case would be to you know open the public hearing and then recess it until the next meeting,” Eck&nbsp;said. “Take any public comment from anybody that is here that wants to make comment on it in accordance with a published notice. Let them make their comment and then you can recess the public hearing until your next meeting and continue it at that point and consider the resolution following the public hearing at that next meeting."

CHENEY, Kan. — On Monday, Shanna&nbsp;Henry announced her campaign for State Senate in Senate District 34, representing Barber County, Kingman County, and Reno County. Senate District 34 is an open seat, following the retirement of Senator Mark Steffen. 

“I decided to run for Kansas Senate because our state no longer has the healthy, vibrant economy and social structure that I benefited from when I was growing up on a McPherson County farm. I believe that to get on track, our area needs a Senator who will listen to their constituents and work to bring opportunity back to rural Kansas. I plan to do that by working to fully fund our public schools, expand access to first-rate healthcare in rural Kansas, and eliminate the bureaucratic red tape that makes it harder for families to keep food on the table.”

Shanna&nbsp;Henry is from a fourth‑generation McPherson County farm family where she learned the value of hard work at an early age. She and her husband, Tim, raised their two children at their home of 29 years in Kingman County. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and enjoyed a successful career in the telecommunications and solar energy industries.&nbsp;Shanna&nbsp;has served on the Kingman County Extension Executive Board, and on the Kingman County Economic Development Council.

Henry added, “There are too many Kansans falling through the cracks after falling on hard times. Coming from a fourth-generation farm family, I know how hard it is for farm families to maintain a living and good mental health in times of a sustained agricultural crisis. As Senator, making life more affordable for Kansas families will be my top priority.”
