HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education President Laura Corey will serve on a statewide task force established by the State Board of Education.

"The State Board of Education at their August board meeting identified a Blue Ribbon Task Force to look at screen time, i.e. iPads and cell phones in schools," Johnson said. "They had a 36 member task force. People could apply for that position. So our board president, Laura Corey, applied to be on that task force and she was accepted. That task force is gonna start looking at use of personal devices in schools, parental oversight of district issued devices, screen time and mental health."

Johnson sees Corey's input as valuable due to her professional experience.

"She's a local therapist here in town," Johnson said. " We're excited what she'll bring to that task force and that we'll maybe get an early look as they meet weekly, I think, just to talk about is there going to be a statewide policy toward devices in schools."

According to a <a href="https://www.edweek.org/technology/which-states-ban-or-restrict-cellphones-in-schools/2024/06">June article from Education Week</a>, Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina have statewide restrictions.

Corey on statewide task force

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/d00b481d-0159-4638-856e-83ccbcf253d8">Since Jane Gamber is stepping down from the USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson Board of Education later this year</a>, Hutch Post asked Superintendent Curtis Nightingale to explain how her spot in the Reno Valley portion of the district will be filled.

"We've already advertised that spot and I've gotten one applicant so far," Nightingale said. "Basically how that process works is we advertise that and then people that live in that area of our district, they basically fill out a questionnaire and then, you know, I meet with them to kind of go through the questionnaire with them. Then I invite them to the board meeting, the next board meeting, and the board has an opportunity. They'll have looked through that questionnaire as well. There'll be kind of a Q and A. The applicant will get a chance to introduce themselves, etc. And then, and at that point after that conversation, the board, if there's a motion and a second for one of those candidates to take a position, there'll be a vote. If four vote in favor of that particular candidate, then they take the seat immediately."

According to Nightingale, Gamber was just re-elected, so the person appointed will serve until the next school board election and then need to run for the seat to keep it. Applications are due by Aug. 30 at noon.

Superintendent outlines board vacancy process

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The Halstead High School football team is looking to lean on its veterans entering the 2024 season, and hopeful of a playoff run in class 2A.&nbsp;

"We're very excited about this year," third-year head coach Derek Racette said. "We have a lot of really good leaders that came back this year. We have a really big senior class with a lot of those guys that have started since their sophomore year when myself and the coaching staff got to Halstead."

The Dragons finished the 2023 season with a 3-6 record. Racette feels like the program is headed back in the right direction of where it used to be.

"The leadership we've had here at Halstead has been really good and the program has continued to grow in a positive way," Racette said. "I feel like we keep taking that next step in the right direction and we're trending up."

Halstead will return a bulk of its offense from last season, including 1,500-plus yard passer Braxton Creed at quarterback.

"We've got a lot of guys back on offense," Racette said. "Braxton Creed at quarterback, plus Joey Millspaugh and Keegan Kraus at fullback. We lost some weapons, but guys like Breeson Bigley, Keaston Shields and Kohen Corona will be big for us. We've got a lot coming back on the offensive line, especially guys like Connor Herman."

As far as the defense goes, Racette is looking forward to having Gage Meyer on the field after missing the past two seasons with a knee injury.

"Getting Gage out there will be big for us," Racette said. "I'm looking forward to how he will be able to help us on both sides of the ball. We'll have most everybody back in the secondary and will have a lot of guys that played significant minutes for us last year. I'm just excited to see people fly around and get to the football."

The Dragons will have a challenging schedule, especially right out of the gates, opening with home games against Hesston on Sept. 6 and then Pratt on Sept. 13.&nbsp;

"The schedule is there and whoever is on the schedule we show up on Friday night if its home or away and put our best foot forward and get after it," Racette said. "It doesn't matter who is on our schedule, we just have to continue to work and get better. We'll be ready to go no matter who it is against."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale gave Hutch Post an update on their bond projects. 

"There's still a lot of supply chain issues,"&nbsp; Nightingale said. "A lot of the stuff that's not completed is just because we're waiting on stuff. You know, we're waiting on aluminum for storefronts. We're waiting on glass."

Other than those touches, though, he says they are mostly done with the process.

"In terms of buildings being completed, I think Reno Valley Middle School is probably about 90, 95% done. And there they had, we had restrooms converted into ADA accessible restrooms. We changed the entrance and then all new windows on that north side, because those old windows were circa 1950 and insulated single pane glass. And so, you know, if it was winter outside, you knew it, stand within 10 feet of the windows, you know, kind of a thing. And so, and then Nickerson Elementary is about, I would say they're about 80% done. They're one of the ones where we're still waiting on some glass, we're waiting on some doors. But the daycare there is up and running. And so that part is done. And then at the high school, the front, you know, we can secure the building now, but, you know, the front is still not done, waiting on glass, waiting on door hardware, some of that. The auditorium won't be done until October. I think seats get delivered here in two weeks. We'll finally have the seats. The floor's down, the ceiling's in, I think lighting and sound crew are in there working in the auditorium now. And then at South Hutch, the classrooms are just doing finishing touches on those, putting in some countertops and some of that stuff, but for the most part, that's done."

Both daycares at South Hutch are open now.

"We've converted those modulars," Nightingale said. "Those are now daycare centers, and those students that were in the modulars will now be in the building. I mean, technically they're in the building now, but they're not in their permanent classrooms yet. Those are the two new add-on classrooms that we've got."

&nbsp;USD 309 passed a 9 year, $7.6 million bond in May 2023.

Nightingale updates USD 309 bond projects

PRATT COUNTY —&nbsp; A K-42 pavement reconstruction is underway at Sawyer, in Pratt County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the K-42/U.S. 281 junction to the east city limits of Sawyer.

The finish date for the work has been pushed back into November, according to an Aug. 22 update from KDOT.

During the work, K-42 will be closed through Sawyer, and motorists will be directed to an official state detour on U.S. 281, U.S. 54/400 and K-14.

KDOT uses state highways for official detour routes for safety, weight and maintenance concerns.

The first map below shows the approximate project location, marked with the red dot. The second map shows the detour route.

Vogts-Parga Construction, of Moundridge, is the primary contractor for the $1,597,038 project.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair not only wants to be Kansas' largest classroom, but also Kansas' safest.

Kansas State Fair general manager Bryan Schulz ensures that the addition of new cameras and security features on the fairgrounds should provide peace of mind.

"When you drive on State Fair Road, yes we do have new cameras out there, just for fair time," Schulz said. "We will have three cameras located in lots A and B, and they're already out there. Then we'll have two cameras in lot C. They're there for the protection of the people that are here."

The fair annually brings in over 300,000 visitors for the ten day event, including 330,044 last fall.

"The last Saturday of last year during the fair we had over 60,000 people on the grounds," Schulz said. "There is times where somebody is going to bump into your car and they're going to leave, and if we have a rough idea of where it is we can zoom in with these cameras. It's a protection piece as well."

Schulz is gearing up for his third year as the Kansas State Fair general manager and has continued to make safety one of his top priorities.

"Two years ago we invested almost $300,000 in cameras," Schulz said. "This year we did another probably close to a $100,000 in cameras, so we have about 69 cameras on the grounds. They have definitely paid for themself already."

The cameras in the parking lots do have the capability of scanning license plates.&nbsp;

"The reason we put the license plate readers on there is because at night when people come and go," Schulz said. "Then all of a sudden we have something happening, well we can see them on a camera and we can see a license plate. So one plus one equals you might be going to jail."

One more feature the cameras have are the ability to scan faces.

"We do have the ability to scan somebody's picture if we needed to," Schulz said. "We're using that more for the lost child or lost parent."

With the Kansas State Fair beginning in two weeks, Schulz and his staff are in final preparation mode.

"Now is where the rubber meets the road," Schulz said. "Final mowings are underway, starting to set up all the entertainment areas, all that kind of stuff, so now is when it gets really crazy busy."

It's a protection piece as well."Schulz is gearing up for his third year as the Kansas State Fair general manager and has continued to make safety one of his top priorities."Two years ago we invested almost $300,000 in cameras," Schulz said. "This year we did another probably close to a $100,000 in cameras, so we have about 69 cameras on the grounds. They have definitely paid for themself already."<figure>

 </figure>The cameras in the parking lots do have the capability of scanning license plates.&nbsp;"The reason we put the license plate readers on there is because at night when people come and go," Schulz said. "Then all of a sudden we have something happening, well we can see them on a camera and we can see a license plate. So one plus one equals you might be going to jail."One more feature the cameras have are the ability to scan faces."We do have the ability to scan somebody's picture if we needed to," Schulz said. "We're using that more for the lost child or lost parent."With the Kansas State Fair beginning in two weeks, Schulz and his staff are in final preparation mode."Now is where the rubber meets the road," Schulz said. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced on Friday that "the time has come for policy to adjust". That means rate cuts are coming, most likely in September. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss spoke to Hutch Post before the announcement, but he was anticipating this and he's pretty sure he knows why they need to cut.&nbsp;

"They're saying it's because they defeated inflation," Goss said. "No, that's not the reason now. That may be partially true, but, well, it is true they defeated inflation, but they brought the economy down as well, and the economy, the overall economy is not doing well."

How fast will they cut? Powell wasn't clear.

"The real issue right now is, is it going to be a quarter percent cut or a half percent cut," Goss said. "We could have a half percent cut, depending. Now, what individuals we all need to be watching out for is those first-time claims for unemployment insurance on each Thursday, but also on the employment report, which is issued on September the 6th. Very, very important."

Unemployment rising could be another harbinger of a bigger need for a rate reduction.

"Back in the 90s, Alan Greenspan considered six percent full employment unemployment rate. It's not six anymore, and it depends a lot on what's going on in Washington," Goss said. "We now just, July, we had the largest federal deficit, second highest federal deficit for a July month ever, $244 billion. So the federal government's a lot of this, making it very hard to read these numbers, but a good number, I feel a good number is in the mid fours, but the problem is, it's going, it's rising, it's going to go beyond four and a half percent, and in my judgment, it'll go above four and a half percent before the end of the year. In fact, I think it'll hit four and a half percent on September the sixth."

If that does happen, then it's not out of the realm to see a 50 basis point cut later next month.

LANGDON, Kan. — The Fairfield High School football team is looking to build on a strong finish to last season, as the Falcons gear up for 2024.

The Falcons finished the 2023 season on a high note with a 56-46 win over Hartford, the lone win for Fairfield last fall. The win ended a 17-game losing streak for the Falcons.

"That win summed up our entire season," Fairfield head coach Kyle Finder said. "It was a hard fought game, and our guys really didn't know how to celebrate. We had to take some time to almost teach them how to celebrate with what was going on. The smiles on their face meant everything and it was a great way to end the season."

Fairfield will open the new year with Hartford, and for the second straight game, it will be on the road.&nbsp;

"It's kind of a double edge sword opening up with them," Finder said. "Yes, we beat them last season, but they were a young team and pushed us to the end. They return everybody from last season and do some things that can give us fits. They're hungry to avenge the loss and I just hope we're not looking past them. We've never really had a whole lot of success, so I just hope we're not taking this one for granted.

The Falcons return starting quarterback Connor Fowler who looks to have a strong senior campaign.

"Connor is our workhorse," Finder said. "We rely on him to do so much both offensively and defensively. This year we're hoping to increase his production while decreasing his reps. There are some guys that we feel like can step up and make Connor more productive. Some of those guys include William McIver, Brodie Snodgrass and Gage Brown."

Finder says the offensive line is mostly intact from last season and will be a big part of the success this season.

"We'll look for those guys to pave holes that anybody can run through," Finder said. "Some of those guys include Garrett Lanning, Chase Combs, Gavin Foster, Lukas and Lane Schwab, and then Braeden Witt will fill in as well."

The Falcons will host a jamboree on Friday, Aug. 30 with St. John, Bucklin and Kinsley.

"We want to continue to build on the successes that we had at the end of last season," Finder said. "We're nine months apart from the end of last season to now. We run a simple enough offense that I feel like we can pick up where we left off, and then just fly around on defense, and most importantly, I just want the guys to have fun."

Finder says his team always puts up a fight, no matter their record.

"We may have been 1-8 last season, but it was one of the most enjoyable times I've had as a coach," Finder said. "The guys have the willing to get better each and every day, they always put in the effort day in and day out. We didn't hang our heads after some close or tough losses, we just were back to work on Monday. We continued to get better as the season went on and I'm really excited to see what this season holds for these guys."

🏈 HSFB Preview: Fairfield

NICKERSON, Kan. — Nickerson High School football coach Taylor Bauman took advantage of the first possible second his team could practice to open the 2024 season, at midnight, Monday.

"It was a lot of fun," Bauman said. "This was the first year we've done it and I think the guys really enjoyed it. It was kind of a spur of the moment idea I had this summer and talked with the coaching staff and some of the guys and they were all in for it. It's something we get to do together as a team and an experience you only get as a high schooler."

The Panthers finished the 2023 season with a 1-8 record, but Bauman likes the experience his young team has had the past couple of seasons.&nbsp;

"We've talked a lot over the offseason about what it's going to take to get back to where Nickerson has been in the past," Bauman said. "Our guys know what it takes to be successful, and we're looking for the guys to take that next step to truly be successful. We can do it, we know what we need to, but we need to make sure we're taking that next step when things get hard. We need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."

Bauman says the experience will help heading into this season, especially on the offense.

"We had some young guys that had to fill in last year when maybe they weren't ready, after some injuries to seniors," Bauman said. "So the benefit to that is now they're all coming back. We had nine starters last year that were either freshmen or sophomores. That experience will really come in handy this year as we continue to grow."

The Panthers' defense should be better this year, too.

"We had some guys that're seniors this year that stepped up as juniors last year," Bauman said. "Keastin Abernathy is a beast out there on the defensive edge. Addrick Nelson and Landen Hays back there as safeties, between those three seniors out there, they kind of just run the defense."

The class 3A district the Panthers had been in the past two seasons was arguably the toughest one in the state of Kansas with Andale, Cheney, Pratt and Smoky Valley.

"Andale and Cheney are obviously two powerhouses," Bauman said. "Cheney overtook Andale for the 3A title, but those two have won the past two titles. When you're going up against those teams every week as freshmen and sophomores, it makes you grow up pretty quick."

Nickerson will open the season Sept. 6 at Conway Springs, the defending class 1A state champions.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Clinic and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas are still at an impasse when it comes to 2025 rates for customers that have BCBS coverage through an employer.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/f9db6853-fae1-46d6-95c8-d7c3a92fb811">In a letter sent to local companies obtained by Hutch Post earlier this summer</a>, the Hutchinson Clinic announced then it will not be doing business with Blue Cross Blue Shield in-network next year. This decision, if it stands, will effect a little over 26,000 Hutch Clinic patients.

Spokesperson Kristi Zears for Blue Cross Blue Shield emailed Hutch Post Thursday with an update. That statement is below.

"As a long-standing partner with Hutchinson Clinic, we are disappointed with their decision to terminate the contract. This decision, which was shared prior to the release of the 2025 reimbursement rates,  limits provider choice for members in the Hutchinson area. We have had continued conversations with Hutchinson Clinic and have provided them an opportunity to reconsider their decision until September 3. We hope they will do what is in the best interest of the community. 

"As always, with nearly 100 percent of providers and hospitals in our network, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is committed to serving our members and helping them through their health journeys."

Hutch Clinic was also contacted and sent this response on Friday.

"The Hutchinson Clinic has been working diligently to analyze the complex Fee Schedule received from BCBSKS on July 31. The Clinic has requested a meeting with BCBSKS for the week of Aug. 26 to clarify some outstanding questions. Regardless of the outcome of this meeting, the Hutchinson Clinic will always prioritize patient care. Should we ultimately end up out of network with BCBSKS, the Hutchinson Clinic will provide affordable out-of-network options so our patients can continue seeking treatment with their physicians at our Clinic."

BCBS is still in network for employer-provided coverage through the remainder of 2024. This decision is not connected with Medicare Advantage coverage, as that is under a separate arrangement.

BCBS Kansas and Hutch Clinic working on solution

INMAN, Kan. — The Inman High School football team is young, but optimistic heading into the 2024 season.

"We're going to be young, but I think we're as talented as we've been in the state runs," head coach Lance Sawyer said. "I think as long as we trust the process and continue to get better everyday, I think we'll be OK."

Sawyer enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Teutons and 18th year overall as a head coach. He has guided Inman to a 50-36 overall in his first eight seasons, while compiling an overall record of 84-85.

The Teutons were hit hard by graduation and departures following the 2022 season, leading to a 3-6 mark in 2023. Inman finished the 2022 year with an 11-2 record, falling to St. Marys in the 1A state title game.&nbsp;

Sawyer is excited to see what the offense can do this season, especially with the speed in the backfield.

"We might have as much speed as we've had in those state runs," Sawyer said. "Korbyn McClellan is as fast as Harrison Brunk and Tanner Heckel, so he could be a really special kid. I think offensively as a whole we'll be young, but we'll be pretty talented."

As far as the defense goes, Sawyer thinks that may be more of a question mark.

"The defense is really yet to be known," Sawyer said. "I think we'll be OK, we may switch up schemes from what we've done in the past to fit our personnel better. I think we'll have a strong defensive line with Cooper Wiens, Evan Kamczynski and Gage Sisson will all help anchor that unit. The linebacker group will be good with Dylan Larson, Sebastian Martinez, Carson Seidl and Braxton Malloy."

The Teutons open the season Sept. 6 at home against Trinity Catholic before traveling to Wichita to face Trinity Academy on Sept. 13. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Teutons and the Knights.

"Everybody in our league had to go find one game outside to fill our schedules," Sawyer said. "So the Heart of America paired up with the Central Plains League and us and Wichita Trinity each had an opening in Week 2."

Sawyer is very familiar with Trinity Academy head coach Trey Hall.

"My first game ever coaching is now their coach," Sawyer said. "He was at Sunrise Academy 18 years ago and I was at White City 18 years ago, so we'll meet up again."

 </figure>SEAN BOSTON Hutch PostINMAN, Kan. — The Inman High School football team is young, but optimistic heading into the 2024 season."We're going to be young, but I think we're as talented as we've been in the state runs," head coach Lance Sawyer said. "I think as long as we trust the process and continue to get better everyday, I think we'll be OK."Sawyer enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Teutons and 18th year overall as a head coach. He has guided Inman to a 50-36 overall in his first eight seasons, while compiling an overall record of 84-85.The Teutons were hit hard by graduation and departures following the 2022 season, leading to a 3-6 mark in 2023. Inman finished the 2022 year with an 11-2 record, falling to St. Marys in the 1A state title game.&nbsp;Sawyer is excited to see what the offense can do this season, especially with the speed in the backfield."We might have as much speed as we've had in those state runs," Sawyer said. "Korbyn McClellan is as fast as Harrison Brunk and Tanner Heckel, so he could be a really special kid. I think offensively as a whole we'll be young, but we'll be pretty talented."As far as the defense goes, Sawyer thinks that may be more of a question mark."The defense is really yet to be known," Sawyer said. "I think we'll be OK, we may switch up schemes from what we've done in the past to fit our personnel better. I think we'll have a strong defensive line with Cooper Wiens, Evan Kamczynski and Gage Sisson will all help anchor that unit. The linebacker group will be good with Dylan Larson, Sebastian Martinez, Carson Seidl and Braxton Malloy."The Teutons open the season Sept. 6 at home against Trinity Catholic before traveling to Wichita to face Trinity Academy on Sept. 13. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School football team is gearing up for the 2024 season, and the Salthawks will rely heavily on its senior class heading into the new year.

The Salthawks finished the 2023 season with a 7-3 record, falling to Maize South in the second round of the class 5A playoffs, 21-20.

"We're a bit thin compared to previous years, but I think we have really good football players," Salthawks seventh year head coach Mike Vernon said. "We're going to have to make sure that we take care of them and they don't get hurt along the way. We have a pretty high ceiling, just got to make sure everyone stays healthy."

The Salthawks may also have to turn to some of the youth on the team at certain points this season.

"During the season we need to make sure that we develop some depth and that will be where this season is made," Vernon said.&nbsp;

Vernon is very optimistic about his defense coming into the year.

"Our defense is going to be pretty dang good," Vernon said. "Our linebackers are all back, and we need to have a couple of defensive linemen step up, but I think that will happen. Secondary will be really good."

Although starting quarterback from last year, Robert Hunter, transferred to Wichita East, Vernon is excited for what the offense can accomplish this fall.

"We've got three offensive linemen that are phenomenal," Vernon said. "We'll have two guys that are going to have to work their way through it, but I know they'll do a great job. Fullback Kade Smith is going to have a really good year. He's a hard runner and just does amazing things."

Senior Terrell King will miss time early in the season with a broken foot, but Vernon is confident the all-state selection will be back sooner than later.

"He'll be back second week hopefully," Vernon said. "He's a phenomenal football player, maybe the best football player in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League. Once we get him back and make sure to keep him healthy then good things will happen."

The Salthawks will have back-to-back home games to open the season. Andover Central comes to Gowans Stadium on Sept. 6 and Valley Center on Sept. 13.

"It's always nice to stay home, especially at the beginning when things are so new, especially for younger starters and younger kids," Vernon said. "Andover Central and Valley Center are both really good programs and it will be a good start for us. It will get us really ramped up for later on when we get into Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League play."

Hutch High opens AVCTL play at Maize in week three and then a rare Thursday night game on Sept. 26 at Salina South.

"I'll have to call up some of the guys in the Kansas City area that are used to playing Thursday night games and see how we want to attack that," Vernon said. "I think this is probably going to be something that's going to be in the future anyways, so might as well get used to it now and start figuring it out."

The Salthawks have been playing in a jamboree in the week prior to the first week of the regular season, but that will not be happening this season.

"We were in with McPherson and Valley Center last year," Vernon said. "Valley Center didn't want to be in a jamboree when they'll play us the second week, so we decided with how thin we are we'll just scrimmage ourselves and make sure that we're ready to go for that first game."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage told Hutch Post that the work that has been done by&nbsp;Director of Learning Services Megan Hett and&nbsp;Maintenance Director Chris Rohr to get the daycare and pre-K programs ready for the fall is something he is proud of.

"What they've done and then the people that work under them to make happen what's happened in Haven, when they're in a location in Yoder, in the amount of time," Idacavage said. "I was telling our board this a couple months ago that it's impressive, it's really impressive."

The work has facilitated continued enrollment gains for little ones.

"In our pre-K, I wanna say we're at 47," Idacavage said. "Then our daycare slots just over the summer and the work they did went from 60 to 80. We qualified for some expansion grants and then through that work that Megan and Chris and their teams did this summer to open up those spots allowed us to, qualified us for some additional funds that we'll be receiving in October to continue to do some capital type programs and expansions to the program."

Staffing is a continued issue as the programs grow.

"It's been difficult at times," Idacavage said. "I think we see that everywhere and when we have openings, we post them and it'll go through phases. We'll get some high quality applicants and then for a while and then we have some openings and then we might not get any for a while. With school starting back up, we utilize some high school kids that want to possibly go into early childhood or just enjoy being around kids and so we're able to fill some hours that way and just piece some things together."

USD 312 daycare and pre-K programs continue growth

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Melissa Evans with Midtown at Avenue A in Hutchinson USD 308 is excited to see what the 2024-2025 school year brings. 

"Midtown is our alternative high school in 308," Evans said. "We serve kids freshmen through senior year. We have switched to an application process and we've capped our enrollment. What we found is there are a lot of kids in our district and our county that are looking for an alternative learning environment, and while we would love to serve all of those kids, we have to make sure we're ready to serve all of those kids. By going to an application process and capping enrollment, it allows us to really build some systems and really solidify what we want that alternative education to look like. This year we did an application process and we capped enrollment and we are currently full, which is really exciting."

There are opportunities for kids at Midtown who may have had some difficulties in the larger setting at Hutch High.

"We're getting to see some changes in our master schedule that we were really intentional about building and just some culture building time with our kiddos because it's a smaller setting," Evans said. "There is more of a, I would almost say a family feel. You get to know each other pretty quickly and we wanted to make sure we were really intentional about building in time to get to know the kids beyond what credits they need, beyond even necessarily what career they want to pursue."

The school had its first town hall meeting this week and they talked about a vision for the year.

"What supports do they need so that they can be successful beyond Midtown, and then what does success look like for them beyond Midtown," Evans said. "We talk a lot about college and career readiness and I think that that's still gonna be the focus for us, but being an alternative school, I think you get an opportunity to get even a little bit more creative and more personalized for those kids, which we're really excited about."

Alternative school ready to 'build some systems'

BUHLER, Kan. — The Red Dirt and Diamonds Music Fest to benefit Buhler baseball is Saturday,&nbsp;just South of 69th &amp; Regier in Buhler.

"We'll open the gates at 5 p.m. and the first act, which is local artist Wyatt Henson will take the stage at 6," said Bre Beals.

The fundraiser is to help Crusader baseball keep up with other programs in the state.

"We raise funds to help pay for some coaching staff, additional coaching staff for the high school baseball team," Beals said. "Then we also pay for things like pitching machines and equipment, on-deck circles, things like that. Some coaching clinics and classes for those guys to kind of polish up their skills. So we do lots of different things. The money that's raised goes right back into the baseball team."

A former HutchCC baseball coach will return as one of the musical acts.
