PARCHMAN, Miss. (AP) — The longest-serving man on Mississippi’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mississippi-death-penalty-richard-gerald-jordan-c5c1a3efa9493184d05011f8f74c807a">death row</a>&nbsp;was executed Wednesday, nearly five decades after he kidnapped and killed a bank loan officer’s wife in a violent ransom scheme.

Richard Gerald Jordan, a 79-year-old Vietnam veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder whose final appeals were denied without comment by the U.S. Supreme Court, was sentenced to death in 1976 for killing and kidnapping Edwina Marter. He died by lethal injection at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman.

The execution began at 6 p.m., according to prison officials. Jordan lay on the gurney with his mouth slightly ajar and took several deep breaths before becoming still. The time of death was given as 6:16 p.m.

Jordan was one of several on the state’s death row who sued the state over its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mississippi-government-and-politics-state-alabama-9e897ae1e84a10923a1ff50a485e4293">three-drug execution protocol</a>, claiming it is inhumane.

When given an opportunity to make a final statement Wednesday, he said, “First I would like to thank everyone for a humane way of doing this. I want to apologize to the victim’s family.”

He also thanked his lawyers and his wife and asked for forgiveness. His last words were: “I will see you on the other side, all of you.”

Jordan’s wife, Marsha Jordan, witnessed the execution, along with his lawyer Krissy Nobile and a spiritual adviser, the Rev. Tim Murphy. His wife and lawyer dabbed their eyes several times.

Jordan's execution was the third in the state in the last 10 years; previously the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-mississippi-92d6248f99fb3139c715eff5c9f95f71">most recent one</a>&nbsp;was carried out in December 2022.

It came a day after a man was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-execution-thomas-lee-gudinas-f90c9b20ca78a95551e45b3db044c25d">put to death in Florida</a>, in what is shaping up to be a year with the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-executions-glance-status-2025-518a3a8a365b8661a02c7c7495e4cff0">most executions</a>&nbsp;since 2015.

Mississippi Supreme Court records show that in January 1976, Jordan called the Gulf National Bank in Gulfport and asked to speak with a loan officer. After he was told that Charles Marter could speak to him, he hung up. He then looked up the Marters’ home address in a telephone book and kidnapped Edwina Marter.

According to court records, Jordan took her to a forest and fatally shot her before calling her husband, claiming she was safe and demanding $25,000.

Edwina Marter’s husband and two sons had not planned to attend the execution. Eric Marter, who was 11 when his mother was killed, said beforehand that other family members would attend.

“It should have happened a long time ago,” Eric Marter told The Associated Press before the execution. “I’m not really interested in giving him the benefit of the doubt.”

“He needs to be punished,” Marter said.

As of the beginning of the year, Jordan was one of 22 people sentenced in the 1970s who were still on death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

His execution ended a decades-long court process that included four trials and numerous appeals. On Monday the Supreme Court rejected a petition that argued he was denied due process rights.

“He was never given what for a long time the law has entitled him to, which is a mental health professional that is independent of the prosecution and can assist his defense,” said lawyer Krissy Nobile, director of Mississippi’s Office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel, who represented Jordan. “Because of that his jury never got to hear about his Vietnam experiences.”

A recent petition asking Gov. Tate Reeves&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWradthI98c">for clemency</a>&nbsp;echoed Nobile’s claim. It said Jordan suffered severe PTSD after serving three back-to-back tours, which could have been a factor in his crime.

“His war service, his war trauma, was considered not relevant in his murder trial,” said Franklin Rosenblatt, president of the National Institute of Military Justice, who wrote the petition on Jordan’s behalf. “We just know so much more than we did 10 years ago, and certainly during Vietnam, about the effect of war trauma on the brain and how that affects ongoing behaviors.”

Marter said he does not buy that argument: “I know what he did. He wanted money, and he couldn’t take her with him. And he — so he did what he did.”

Man who killed loan officer's wife apologized before his execution

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. intelligence report suggests that Iran's nuclear program has been set back only a few months after U.S. strikes and was not "completely and fully obliterated" as President Donald Trump has said, according to two people familiar with the early assessment.

The report issued by the Defense Intelligence Agency on Monday contradicts statements from Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the status of Iran's nuclear facilities. According to the people, the report found that while the Sunday strikes at the Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites did significant damage, the facilities were not totally destroyed. The people were not authorized to address the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The White House rejected the DIA assessment, calling it "flat-out wrong." On Wednesday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said in a post on X that "New intelligence confirms" what Trump has stated: "Iran's nuclear facilities have been destroyed. If the Iranians chose to rebuild, they would have to rebuild all three facilities (Natanz, Fordow, Esfahan) entirely, which would likely take years to do."

Gabbard's office declined to respond to questions about the details of the new intelligence, or whether it would be declassified and released publicly.

The office of the director of national intelligence coordinates the work of the nation's 18 intelligence agencies, including the DIA, which is the intelligence arm of the Defense Department, responsible for producing intelligence on foreign militaries and the capabilities of adversaries.

The DIA did not respond to requests for comment.

The U.S. has held out hope of restarting negotiations with Iran to convince it to give up its nuclear program entirely, but some experts fear that the U.S. strikes — and the potential of Iran retaining some of its capabilities — could push Tehran toward developing a functioning weapon.

The assessment also suggests that at least some of Iran's highly enriched uranium, necessary for creating a nuclear weapon, was moved out of multiple sites before the U.S. strikes and survived, and it found that Iran's centrifuges, which are required to further enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels, are largely intact, according to the people.

At the deeply buried Fordo uranium enrichment plant, where U.S. B-2 stealth bombers dropped several 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, the entrance collapsed and infrastructure was damaged, but the underground infrastructure was not destroyed, the assessment found. The people said that intelligence officials had warned of such an outcome in previous assessments ahead of the strike on Fordo.

Trump defended his characterization of the strike's impact.

"It was obliteration, and you'll see that," Trump told reporters while attending the NATO summit in the Netherlands. He said the intelligence was "very inconclusive" and described media outlets as "scum" for reporting on it.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was also at the NATO summit, said there would be an investigation into how the intelligence assessment leaked and dismissed it as "preliminary" and "low confidence."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, "These leakers are professional stabbers."

The intelligence assessment was first reported by CNN on Tuesday.

The Israel Atomic Energy Commission said its assessment was that the U.S. and Israeli strikes have "set back Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years." It did not give evidence to back up its claim.

Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff, who said he has read damage assessment reports from U.S. intelligence and other nations, reiterated Tuesday that the strikes had deprived Iran of the ability to develop a weapon and called it outrageous that the U.S. assessment was shared with reporters.

"It's treasonous so it ought to be investigated," Witkoff said on Fox News Channel.

Trump has said in comments and posts on social media in recent days, including Tuesday, that the strike left the sites in Iran "totally destroyed" and that Iran will never rebuild its nuclear facilities.

Netanyahu said Tuesday in a televised statement: "For dozens of years I promised you that Iran would not have nuclear weapons and indeed ... we brought to ruin Iran's nuclear program." He said the U.S. joining Israel was "historic" and thanked Trump.

Outside experts had suspected Iran had likely already hidden the core components of its nuclear program as it stared down the possibility that American bunker-buster bombs could be used on its nuclear sites.

Bulldozers and trucks visible in satellite imagery taken just days before the strikes have fueled speculation among experts that Iran may have transferred its half-ton stockpile of enriched uranium to an unknown location. And the incomplete destruction of the nuclear sites could still leave the country with the capacity to spin up weapons-grade uranium and develop a bomb.

Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful, but it has enriched significant quantities of uranium beyond the levels required for any civilian use. The U.S. and others assessed prior to the U.S. strikes that Iran's theocratic leadership had not yet ordered the country to pursue an operational nuclear weapon, but the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly warned that Iran has enough enriched uranium to make several nuclear bombs should it choose to do so.

Vice President JD Vance said in a Monday interview on Fox News Channel that even if Iran is still in control of its stockpile of 408.6 kilograms (900.8 pounds) of enriched uranium, which is just short of weapons-grade, the U.S. has cut off Iran's ability to convert it to a nuclear weapon.

"If they have 60% enriched uranium, but they don't have the ability to enrich it to 90%, and, further, they don't have the ability to convert that to a nuclear weapon, that is mission success. That is the obliteration of their nuclear program, which is why the president, I think, rightly is using that term," Vance said.

Approximately 42 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium is theoretically enough to produce one atomic bomb if enriched further to 90%, according to the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi on June 13 — the day Israel launched its military campaign against Iran — that Tehran would "adopt special measures to protect our nuclear equipment and materials."

American satellite imagery and analysis firm Maxar Technologies said its satellites photographed trucks and bulldozers at the Fordo site beginning on June 19, three days before the Americans struck.

Subsequent imagery "revealed that the tunnel entrances into the underground complex had been sealed off with dirt prior to the U.S. airstrikes," said Stephen Wood, senior director at Maxar. "We believe that some of the trucks seen on 19 June were carrying dirt to be used as part of that operation."

Some experts say those trucks could also have been used to move out Iran's enriched uranium stockpile.

"It is plausible that Iran moved the material enriched to 60% out of Fordo and loaded it on a truck," said Eric Brewer, a former U.S. intelligence analyst and now deputy vice president at the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

Iran could also have moved other equipment, including centrifuges, he said, noting that while enriched uranium, which is stored in fortified canisters, is relatively easy to transport, delicate centrifuges are more challenging to move without inflicting damage.

Apart from its enriched uranium stockpile, over the past four years Iran has produced the centrifuges key to enrichment without oversight from the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Iran also announced on June 12 that it has built and will activate a third nuclear enrichment facility. IAEA chief Grossi said the facility was located in Isfahan, a place where Iran has several other nuclear sites. After being bombarded by both the Israelis and the Americans, it is unclear if, or how quickly, Isfahan's facilities, including tunnels, could become operational.

But given all of the equipment and material likely still under Iran's control, this offers Tehran "a pretty solid foundation for a reconstituted covert program and for getting a bomb," Brewer said.

Kelsey Davenport, director for nonproliferation policy at the Arms Control Association, a nonpartisan policy center, said that "if Iran had already diverted its centrifuges," it can "build a covert enrichment facility with a small footprint and inject the 60% gas into those centrifuges and quickly enrich to weapons grade levels."

But Brewer also underlined that if Iran launched a covert nuclear program, it would do so at a disadvantage, having lost to Israeli and American strikes vital equipment and personnel that are crucial for turning the enriched uranium into a functional nuclear weapon.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. intelligence report suggests that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/iran-nuclear">Iran’s nuclear program</a>&nbsp;has been set back only a few months after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-talks-geneva-news-06-21-2025-a7b0cdaba28b5817467ccf712d214579">U.S. strikes</a>&nbsp;and was not “completely and fully obliterated” as President Donald Trump has said, according to two people familiar with the early assessment.

The report issued by the Defense Intelligence Agency on Monday contradicts statements from Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the status of Iran's nuclear facilities. According to the people, the report found that while the Sunday strikes at the Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bunker-buster-bomb-israel-iran-fordo-fordow-b2-nuclear-8a612cbf16aa0f99bd9992334ffc93d7">did significant damage</a>, the facilities were not totally destroyed. The people were not authorized to address the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The assessment also suggests that at least some of Iran’s highly enriched uranium, necessary for creating a nuclear weapon, was moved out of multiple sites before the U.S. strikes and survived, and it found that Iran’s centrifuges, which are required to further enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels, are largely intact, according to the people.

The White House strongly pushed back on the DIA assessment, calling it “flat-out wrong.”

“The leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000 pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration.”

The CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment on the DIA assessment. ODNI coordinates the work of the nation’s 18 intelligence agencies, including the DIA, which is the intelligence arm of the Defense Department, responsible for producing intelligence on foreign militaries and the capabilities of adversaries. The Israeli government also has not released any official assessments of the U.S. strikes.

Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff, who said he has read damage assessment reports from U.S. intelligence and other nations, reiterated Tuesday night that the strikes had deprived Iran of the ability to develop a weapon and called it outrageous that the U.S. assessment was shared with reporters.

“It’s treasonous so it ought to be investigated," Witkoff said on Fox News Channel.

Trump has said in comments and posts on social media in recent days, including Tuesday, that the strike left the sites in Iran “totally destroyed” and that Iran will never rebuild its nuclear facilities.

Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Tuesday that, “For dozens of years I promised you that Iran would not have nuclear weapons and indeed ... we brought to ruin Iran’s nuclear program." He said the U.S. joining Israel was “historic" and thanked Trump.

Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful, but it has enriched significant quantities of uranium beyond the levels required for any civilian use. WASHINGTON (AP) — A new U.S. intelligence report found that Iran’s nuclear program has been set back only a few months after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-talks-geneva-news-06-21-2025-a7b0cdaba28b5817467ccf712d214579">a U.S. strike</a>&nbsp;and was not “completely and fully obliterated” as President Donald Trump has said, according to two people familiar with the early assessment.

The intelligence report issued by the Defense Intelligence Agency on Monday contradicts statements from Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the status of Iran's nuclear facilities. The people were not authorized to address the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

According to the people, the report found that while the Saturday strikes at the Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bunker-buster-bomb-israel-iran-fordo-fordow-b2-nuclear-8a612cbf16aa0f99bd9992334ffc93d7">did significant damage</a>, they were not totally destroyed.

The assessment found that at least some of Iran’s highly enriched uranium was moved out of multiple sites before the U.S. strikes and survived, according to the people, and it also found that Iran’s centrifuges are largely intact.

At the deeply buried Fordo uranium enrichment plant, the entrance collapsed and infrastructure was damaged, so that will take time to fix, but the underground infrastructure was not destroyed, according to one of the people. The person also said that previous assessments had warned of this outcome at Fordo.

The White House strongly pushed back on the assessment, calling it “flat-out wrong.”

Trump has said in comments and posts on social media in recent days, including Tuesday, that the strikes left the sites in Iran “totally destroyed” and that Iran will never rebuild its nuclear facilities.

Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Tuesday that, “For dozens of years I promised you that Iran would not have nuclear weapons and indeed ... we brought to ruin Iran’s nuclear program."

He said the U.S. joining Israel was “historic" and thanked Trump.

The CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment on the DIA assessment. ODNI coordinates the work of the nation’s 18 intelligence agencies, including the DIA, which is the intelligence arm of the Defense Department, responsible for producing intelligence on foreign militaries and the capabilities of adversaries.

Democrats have been generally suspicious of the Republican president’s strategy, and his motives abroad, but some believe the U.S. could have a role in supporting Israel against Iran. Others strongly believe the U.S. should stay out of it.

Some of Trump’s strongest Republican supporters agree with the Democrats, echoing his earlier arguments against “forever wars.” But many others in the party enthusiastically backed the strikes, saying he should have the power to act on his own.

“President Trump deserves all the credit,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., after Trump said there would be a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. “This is what peace through strength looks like.”

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, suggested in a post on X that Trump should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., posted: “Historic! The President of Peace!”

Democrats said they would be looking for more information about the ceasefire that Trump had claimed earlier on social media.

After Iran’s retaliation on the U.S. base in Qatar on Monday, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said he wanted an additional classified briefing “laying out the full threat picture, the intelligence behind Iran’s retaliation, and the details, scope, and timeline of any U.S. response.”

Senate Democrats are also forcing a vote as soon as this week on a resolution by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., requiring congressional approval for specific military action in Iran.

“You have a debate like this so that the entire American public, whose sons and daughters are in the military and whose lives will be at risk in war, get to see the debate and reach their own conclusion together with the elected officials about whether the mission is worth it or not,” Kaine said Monday.

Communication between the White House and Congress about Iran has been limited for most members. Trump sent congressional leaders a short letter Monday serving as his official notice of the strikes, two days after the bombs fell.

Trump said the attacks were “limited in scope and purpose” and “designed to minimize casualties, deter future attacks and limit the risk of escalation.”

Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, said he wants to ask the intelligence officials what they know about the damage done by the bombings, and how successful they were.

“There’s a reason why the Constitution requires the Congress to be informed and the president to seek approval in beginning a war, which is the founders thought that the people should have a say, that the president shouldn’t act alone,” Blumenthal said.

Gene Austin Elliott, 87, of Hutchinson, KS, went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2025. He was born on September 27, 1937, in Eureka, KS, to Archie and Treva (Rayburn) Elliott.

Gene graduated from McPherson High School in 1955 and earned a degree in Business from McPherson College in 1959. On March 30, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Rossow. They shared 54 beautiful years of marriage before her passing in 2012.

In 1967, Gene and Rhonda moved to Hutchinson, where they purchased an insurance agency that would later become Elliott Insurance Management Inc. Gene owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 2006. He loved his work and took pride in servicing his clients and community. Gene served as president of the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents and was the State National Director for Kansas, representing the industry at the national level. His daughter, Jodee, joined the agency in 1987, and the two worked side by side for nearly two decades.

Gene embodied the American Dream-through hard work, perseverance and faith, he built a business and provided for his family.

Gene proudly served his country in the Reserve Unit of the National Guard and was a lifelong patriot. He was also a member of Inspire Church, where he served on the board and loved his faith community.

As a longtime Scoutmaster of Troop One, Gene guided many young men to achieve their Eagle Scout rank - including his two sons, Tim and Kip.

A lifelong athlete, Gene excelled in football, basketball, American Legion baseball, and pole vaulting during his school years at McPherson High and McPherson College. His love for sports continued throughout his life. Gene rarely missed a Hutchinson High or Hutchinson Community College game. After college, he played slow-pitch softball until he was 82 years of age proudly sponsoring the Elliott Insurance team for many years. Gene also played competitively in Kansas City and after retirement, in Arizona. He loved coaching his children and cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines.

For over 40 years, Gene could be found at the Village Inn most mornings around 8 a.m., sharing coffee, laughter and “Monday morning quarterbacking” with his longtime buddies. He cherished these times and these men.

Gene was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Rhonda; son, Tim; parents; and brother, Carl.

He is survived by: his loving companion, Margie Lundmark; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Elliott of Overland Park; son, Kip Elliott of Nashville, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Jodee and Kevin Bowen of Hutchinson. Gene leaves behind 8 grandchildren: Alicia Billings (Toby), Jordan Billings (Heather), Megan Machen (Ben), Michael Elliott, Elli Houston (Ryan), Trace Bowen (Cori), Luke Elliott (Gaby) and Will Elliott (Ella). He was also blessed with 4 great-grandchildren: Elliott, Audrey, Olive, and Hudson.

Gene and Rhonda’s enduring faith was the foundation of their family. They passed on the greatest gift of all to their children and grandchildren-an abiding love and trust in the Lord. In a letter Gene wrote Jodee a few years ago, he ended with a line that perfectly captures his spirit: “With God, life is a blast. &nbsp;Just think what a blast it will be when we all meet in Heaven!”

A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2025, at Inspire Church, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Kansas Army National Guard. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. There will be a lunch following the Celebration.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Trump administration to restart&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-venezuela-el-salvador-immigration-dd4f61999f85c4dd8bcaba7d4fc7c9af">swift removals of migrants</a>&nbsp;to countries other than their homelands, lifting for now a court order requiring they get a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-alien-enemies-act-deportations-c581c1ef8ce5199286727b17c12f81d9">chance to challenge the deportations</a>.

The high court majority did not detail its reasoning in the brief order, as is typical on its emergency docket. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by the other two liberal justices, issued a scathing dissent.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin suggested&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/libya-deportation-immigration-trump-administration-4b1eedcd3c8958c27cab0d2ef8320b51">third-country deportations</a>&nbsp;could restart soon. “Fire up the deportation planes," she said in a statement, calling the decision “a victory for the safety and security of the American people."

The court action came after immigration officials&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deportation-immigration-south-sudan-department-of-homeland-security-300e8c704402e2cb3c920d251b7fa876">put eight people on a plane to South Sudan</a>, though they later diverted to an American naval base in Djibouti after a judge stepped in.

The migrants from countries including Myanmar, Vietnam and Cuba&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deportees-south-sudan-ice-immigration-identities-eddd2d1a172775ec7d9403984ffb41e2">had been convicted</a>&nbsp;of serious crimes in the U.S., and immigration officials have said they were unable to return them quickly to their home countries.

Their attorneys continued to press for a court order blocking their removal to South Sudan until they have a chance to talk with lawyers and raise concerns of “imprisonment, torture and even death there," attorney Trina Realmuto, executive director of the National Immigration Litigation Alliance, wrote.

The case comes amid a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-temporary-protected-status-parole-trump-8a1358964032129ba84f10aab071ba68">sweeping immigration crackdown</a>&nbsp;by Republican President Donald Trump’s administration, which has pledged to deport millions of people who are living in the United States illegally.

“The Constitution and Congress have vested authority in the President to enforce immigration laws and remove dangerous aliens from the homeland,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said. The Supreme Court’s action “reaffirms the President’s authority to remove criminal illegal aliens from our country and Make America Safe Again.”

In her 19-page dissent, Sotomayor wrote that the court’s action exposes “thousands to the risk of torture or death" and gives the Trump administration a win despite earlier violating the lower court's order.

“The government has made clear in word and deed that it feels itself unconstrained by law, free to deport anyone anywhere without notice or an opportunity to be heard,” she wrote in the dissent, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

South Sudan, the world’s newest and one of its poorest countries, has endured&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-sudan-explainer-trump-deportees-3552af27dab8a5f68087d4b4e2201118">repeated waves of violence</a>&nbsp;since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, and escalating political tensions in the African nation have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-sudan-violence-machar-kiir-15c0df9717b56950e5f003f1c83bb529">threatened to devolve into another civil war</a>.

The Justice Department said in court documents that the government is weighing the order to decide its next steps.

The Supreme Court action halts an order from U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy in Boston, who decided in April that people must get a chance to argue deportation to a third country would put them in danger — even if they have otherwise exhausted their legal appeals.

He found that the May deportations to South Sudan violated his order and told immigration authorities to allow people to raise those concerns through their lawyers. Immigration officials housed the migrants in a converted shipping container in Djibouti, where they and the officers guarding them faced rough conditions.

The administration has reached agreements with other countries, including Panama and Costa Rica, to house immigrants because some countries do not accept their citizens deported from the U.S. The migrants sent to South Sudan in May got less than 16 hours’ notice, Sotomayor wrote.

Murphy, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, didn't&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-immigration-deportations-third-countries-89eb617cb350bfeb2114f7b4a4e07aefhttps://apnews.com/article/us-immigration-deportations-third-countries-89eb617cb350bfeb2114f7b4a4e07aef">prohibit deportations</a>&nbsp;to third countries. But he found migrants must have a real chance to argue they could be in serious danger of torture if sent to another country.

Another order in the same case resulted in the Trump administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-deportation-guatemala-trump-return-64602344d97ef93529ef5f21b4fd5807">returning a gay Guatemalan man</a>&nbsp;who had been wrongly deported to Mexico, where he says he had been raped and extorted — the first person known to have been returned to U.S. custody after deportation since the start of Trump’s second term.

The justices confronted a similar issue in Trump’s effort to send Venezuelans accused of being gang members to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/el-salvador-trump-prison-immigrants-4ab3fc3c0474efb308084604b61f8a37">a notorious prison in El Salvador</a>&nbsp;with little chance to challenge the deportations in court.

The conservative-majority court has sided with Trump in other immigration cases, however, clearing the way for his administration to end temporary legal protections affecting a total of nearly a million immigrants.

Supreme Court lets Trump restart deporting migrants away from their home countries

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rallied, and the price of oil tumbled Monday on hopes that Iran will not disrupt the global flow of crude, something that would hurt economies worldwide but also its own, following the United States’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-fordo-us-strike-trump-israel-nuclear-sites-320a85327f94ed7496f09564261f3148">bunker-busting entry</a>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-trump-bomber-news-06-23-2025-9e78510c88ccc5e262341f41550609c5">its war with Israel</a>.

The S&amp;P 500 climbed 1%, coming off a week where stock prices had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-iran-oil-inflation-73ce222b5b803474c48ff0008f5a8626">jumped up</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-iran-tariffs-rates-b8cceca51655d69ee007b411bc9418b4">down</a>&nbsp;on worries about the conflict potentially escalating. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 374 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.9%.

The price of oil initially jumped 6% after trading began Sunday night, a signal of rising worries as investors got their first chance to react to the U.S. bombings. But it quickly erased all those gains and swung to a sharp loss as the focus shifted from what the U.S. military did to how Iran would react.

By late Monday, the price of a barrel of benchmark U.S. oil had dropped 7.2% to settle at $68.51 after briefly topping $78. That brought it nearly all the way back to where it was before the fighting began over a week ago, when it was sitting just above $68.

The losses accelerated sharply after Iran announced a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-trump-bomber-news-06-23-2025-9e78510c88ccc5e262341f41550609c5">missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar</a>, which the U.S. military uses. Iran said it matched the number of bombs dropped by the United States on Iranian nuclear sites this past weekend, which could be a signal of a desire to deescalate the conflict.

Perhaps most importantly for financial markets, Iran’s retaliation did not seem to target the flow of oil. The fear throughout the Israel-Iran war has been that it could squeeze the world’s supply of oil, which would pump up prices for it, gasoline and other products refined from crude.

Iran is a major producer of crude, and it could also try to block the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/strait-hormuz-iran-israel-war-oil-15ce74cc8df0f19a6b7f6357773b07c8">Strait of Hormuz</a>&nbsp;off its coast, through which 20% of the world’s daily oil needs passes on ships.

Several analysts said Iran would likely not close the waterway because Iran itself uses the strait to move its own crude, mostly to China, and it needs the revenue made from such sales of oil.

“It’s a scorched earth possibility, a Sherman-burning-Atlanta move,” said Tom Kloza, chief market analyst at Turner Mason &amp; Co. “It’s not probable.”

Neil Newman, managing director of Atris Advisory Japan, said hope remains that the Israel-Iran war could be a short conflict, with the thinking being “the one big hit by the Americans will be effective and then we’ll get back to sort of business as usual, in which case there is no need for an immediate, panicky type of reaction.”

Of course, not everyone is sure about Iran’s next move.

Andy Lipow, a Houston analyst covering oil markets for 45 years, said countries are not always rational actors and that he wouldn’t be surprised if Tehran lashed out for political or emotional reasons.

“If the Strait of Hormuz was completely shut down, oil prices would rise to $120 to $130 a barrel,” said Lipow.

“It would mean higher prices for all those goods transported by truck, and it would be more difficult for the Fed to lower interest rates.”

The Federal Reserve has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-interest-rates-fed-fa91e7b38ca858ff54f57bc642111188">hesitant to cut interest rates</a>&nbsp;this year because it’s waiting to see how much&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/consumer-prices-inflation-trump-trade-6ea513a44876c2f4dc948a25c15b0eb0">President Donald Trump’s tariffs</a>&nbsp;will hurt the economy and raise inflation.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-trump-tariffs-b0f098351a1f3f850a4c20b215556027">Inflation</a>&nbsp;has remained&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/producer-prices-inflation-economy-trump-tariffs-0a25bf91e2dde5df0d8c131a2d95c816">relatively tame</a>&nbsp;recently, but a rise in oil and gasoline prices would put upward pressure on it. That in turn could keep the Fed on hold because cuts to rates can fan inflation higher, along with giving the economy a boost.

In the bond market, Treasury yields eased after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/interest-rates-economy-inflation-a90fe4835c1e5d381d16e32bc778981d">Fed Gov. Michelle Bowman said she would support cutting</a>&nbsp;rates at the Fed’s next meeting in just a month, as long as “inflation pressures remain contained.”

The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.33% from 4.38% late Friday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for the Fed, dropped to 3.84% from 3.90%.

On Wall Street, Elon Musk’s Tesla was the single strongest force pushing the S&amp;P 500 higher after jumping 8.2%. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rallied, and the price of oil tumbled Monday on hopes that Iran will not disrupt the global flow of crude, something that would hurt economies worldwide but also its own, following the United States’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-fordo-us-strike-trump-israel-nuclear-sites-320a85327f94ed7496f09564261f3148">bunker-busting entry</a>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-trump-bomber-news-06-23-2025-9e78510c88ccc5e262341f41550609c5">its war with Israel</a>.The S&amp;P 500 climbed 1%, coming off a week where stock prices had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-iran-oil-inflation-73ce222b5b803474c48ff0008f5a8626">jumped up</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-iran-tariffs-rates-b8cceca51655d69ee007b411bc9418b4">down</a>&nbsp;on worries about the conflict potentially escalating. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 374 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.9%.The price of oil initially jumped 6% after trading began Sunday night, a signal of rising worries as investors got their first chance to react to the U.S. bombings. But it quickly erased all those gains and swung to a sharp loss as the focus shifted from what the U.S. military did to how Iran would react.By late Monday, the price of a barrel of benchmark U.S. oil had dropped 7.2% to settle at $68.51 after briefly topping $78. That brought it nearly all the way back to where it was before the fighting began over a week ago, when it was sitting just above $68.The losses accelerated sharply after Iran announced a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-trump-bomber-news-06-23-2025-9e78510c88ccc5e262341f41550609c5">missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar</a>, which the U.S. military uses. Iran said it matched the number of bombs dropped by the United States on Iranian nuclear sites this past weekend, which could be a signal of a desire to deescalate the conflict.Perhaps most importantly for financial markets, Iran’s retaliation did not seem to target the flow of oil. The fear throughout the Israel-Iran war has been that it could squeeze the world’s supply of oil, which would pump up prices for it, gasoline and other products refined from crude.Iran is a major producer of crude, and it could also try to block the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/strait-hormuz-iran-israel-war-oil-15ce74cc8df0f19a6b7f6357773b07c8">Strait of Hormuz</a>&nbsp;off its coast, through which 20% of the world’s daily oil needs passes on ships.Several analysts said Iran would likely not close the waterway because Iran itself uses the strait to move its own crude, mostly to China, and it needs the revenue made from such sales of oil.“It’s a scorched earth possibility, a Sherman-burning-Atlanta move,” said Tom Kloza, chief market analyst at Turner Mason &amp; Co. “It’s not probable.”Neil Newman, managing director of Atris Advisory Japan, said hope remains that the Israel-Iran war could be a short conflict, with the thinking being “the one big hit by the Americans will be effective and then we’ll get back to sort of business as usual, in which case there is no need for an immediate, panicky type of reaction.”Of course, not everyone is sure about Iran’s next move.Andy Lipow, a Houston analyst covering oil markets for 45 years, said countries are not always rational actors and that he wouldn’t be surprised if Tehran lashed out for political or emotional reasons.“If the Strait of Hormuz was completely shut down, oil prices would rise to $120 to $130 a barrel,” said Lipow.“It would mean higher prices for all those goods transported by truck, and it would be more difficult for the Fed to lower interest rates.”The Federal Reserve has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-interest-rates-fed-fa91e7b38ca858ff54f57bc642111188">hesitant to cut interest rates</a>&nbsp;this year because it’s waiting to see how much&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/consumer-prices-inflation-trump-trade-6ea513a44876c2f4dc948a25c15b0eb0">President Donald Trump’s tariffs</a>&nbsp;will hurt the economy and raise inflation.<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-trump-tariffs-b0f098351a1f3f850a4c20b215556027">Inflation</a>&nbsp;has remained&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/producer-prices-inflation-economy-trump-tariffs-0a25bf91e2dde5df0d8c131a2d95c816">relatively tame</a>&nbsp;recently, but a rise in oil and gasoline prices would put upward pressure on it. Stocks rally following the US air strikes on Iran

The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson is celebrating National Boys and Girls Club Week, June 23–27, by inviting the community to step inside its mission through events, alumni engagement, and youth showcases.

Activities this week include a focus on health and wellness, workforce readiness, creative arts, and career planning. On Tuesday, the club highlighted its Work-Based Learning initiative, which places more than 30 teens in their first job experiences throughout the community.<figure>

 </figure>“Fit for the Future” is the week’s guiding theme, a nod to both physical health and career preparation. Staff and members donned workout gear on Monday as part of a wellness kickoff. Later in the week, art will take center stage as an Atlanta-based artist is leading teens in self-portrait projects using a variety of media.The community is invited to a family night and open house Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Shadduck Park Community Center, 600 W. 2nd Ave. Current members, families, alumni, and newcomers are encouraged to attend. The club’s Avenue A site is full for summer, but openings remain for incoming sixth graders and older youth at Shadduck.Patterson also announced that the Hutchinson club is helping to launch a similar program in Salina. Interviews are underway for a new director, and the goal is to open the new site by November.<figure>

 </figure>“We’re excited to help build something from the ground up in Salina,” Patterson said. “It speaks volumes about the strength and reputation of what we’ve built here in Hutchinson.”According to the club’s 2024 Impact Report, 99% of teen members believe they are prepared to succeed in the workplace, and 89% report an understanding of how their emotions impact their actions—skills the organization emphasizes through daily interaction and mentorship.“Those results don’t happen by accident,” said Lindsey Fields, Director of Impact. “They’re the product of consistent support, strong relationships, and helping kids try things they wouldn’t have tried otherwise.”Funding remains a challenge, however.
