HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement officers at locations across the state will be collecting unused medications for safe disposal on Saturday.

The next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, sponsored by the DEA, will be on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.

&nbsp;The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.&nbsp;

Since the Drug Take-Back Day program began in 2010, more than 118 tons of unwanted medications have been collected and destroyed in Kansas alone.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates opioid overdoses kill nearly 130 Americans every day. According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, pharmaceutical opioids are a leading cause of drug poisoning deaths in Kansas.

Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that traditional methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards and should be avoided.

There are several Hutch Post area departments that will be a part of the day.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Police Department will hold their event at the Dillons Marketplace Pharmacy Side at 3200 Plaza East Drive.

The Sterling Police Department will hold their event at the department at 118 North Broadway in Sterling.

The Lindsborg Police Department will hold their event at the department at 102 South First Street in Lindsborg.

The McPherson Police Department and McPherson County Sheriff's Office will be hosting their event and accepting expired and unwanted Prescription Medications for disposal at the Law Enforcement Center parking lot located at 1177 West Woodside Street in McPherson.

The Harvey County Sheriff's Office will hold their event at 120 East 7th in Newton.

Needles, liquids or inhalers cannot be accepted at Drug Take Back Day events.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Housing Commission will receive proposals to spend a significant amount of its ARPA allocation at its meeting on Wednesday. 

According to agenda documents, the Housing Commission received $308,000 in ARPA funds to advance housing initiatives in Hutchinson. As of April 2024, the Housing Commission has approved a total of $82,000 in programming. 

Director of Strategic Growth, Dave Sotelo has asked for approval of three specific requests on Wednesday.

• Recommendation: Given the importance of data-driven decisionmaking in urban planning, allocating funds to Urban3 will enable the city to gather crucial insights into housing trends and community development strategies. This investment aligns with the goal of creating sustainable and equitable housing solutions.

2. Interfaith Demolition Program: $27,500

• Recommendation: Supporting the Interfaith Demolition Program is vital for addressing blight and revitalizing neighborhoods. By allocating funds to this program, the city can expedite the removal of derelict properties, paving the way for future redevelopment efforts and enhancing the overall livability of the city.

• Recommendation: SCKEDD’s innovative resurgence program is addressing a critical need in the holistic housing efforts. These funds will be used to make further enhancements to properties including sidewalk and paint improvements.

If the approval of these projects goes through Wednesday, a balance of $93,500 will remain.

Sotelo said city staff is diligently examining the existing gaps within the housing ecosystem to devise innovative recommendations for the allocation of these funds. 

"We are committed to maximizing the impact of every dollar to address pressing housing needs and foster a more inclusive and resilient community," Sotelo said.

The Hutchinson Housing Commission will meet Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. in the&nbsp;City Council Chambers Workroom at 125 E. Avenue B.

Housing Commission to approve ARPA fund spending Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Go to the Midway at the Kansas State Fairgrounds for the April Midway Movie Night on April 27, featuring the movie, Aquaman.

April Midway Movie Night at Fairgrounds Saturday

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will see a proposal at their meeting on Wednesday to spend $260,000 in ARPA funds on the Reno County EMS station in Arlington. This was one of the projects originally approved by the Commission in 2022.

Reno County and the hospital are in discussions to get the Arlington EMS station completed in 2024.


The $260,000 in ARPA money comes from the U.S. Treasury's State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds that must be spent by December 31, 2026.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

County to use ARPA funds for Arlington EMS building

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local business and community leader Bob Fee announced Monday his Senate Campaign will be hosting events in multiple counties on Friday, May 3.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson and Earth Matters are teaching kids about how to use their resources more wisely.

"We work with primarily fourth and fifth graders that go to the after school program at Avenue A," said Nancy Bether with Earth Matters. "They are very curious about the Reno County Sanitary Landfill and how all of that works. We got to go out there and look at it and satisfy some of their questions. It was a pretty fascinating field trip. They had lots of questions about how people recycle paint and chemicals and lawn things. They were very curious about the big pits and all of the birds."

Along with a set curriculum, students learn about the Reno County Landfill and the science used in the local waste system and the TECH Recycling Center, Fair Price Clothing, and Builders Bargains to see how reusing takes place locally.

"In May, we're going to go to a dairy farm that's self supportive from the very beginning," Bether said. "They have a cycle where they wash their barns out with their pond water and they raise all their own dairy cows and they raise all their own feed for their dairy cows, so basically, we're just trying to educate our kiddos on how to be good stewards."

Earth Matters hopes to take students who have completed the program into classrooms and community organizations to share their commitment to environmentally conscious choices.

"We always want to give kids the opportunity to learn more about our community and the part they can take in it," said Lindsey Fields with the Boys and Girls Club. "I'm personally already seeing the impact that Earth Matters has. I run our little torch club program over at Avenue A, which is fourth and fifth graders. They are talking about trees and parks and rivers and turtles and large cats, which is probably the zoo. Those are the kinds of things that kids are interested in. They care about the world around them, but they don't necessarily know what they can do, because kids don't always feel empowered, so that is part of what we're here to do is give them the education and the voice to make a difference."

Boys and Girls Club and Earth Matters teaching reuse choices

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year, Zion Burgess won the Kansas Youth of the Year title in March.

Burgess is a senior at Hutchinson High School. In mid-June he will travel to Dallas to compete for the regional title. Mr. Burgess will deliver his speech to the Board of Education at their meeting Monday night.

The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Each state-level Youth of the Year, including military, earns a $2,500 college scholarship. Each regional Youth of the Year, including regional military finalists, receives a $20,000 college scholarship. The National Youth of the Year receives a $50,000 scholarship.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year, Zion Burgess won the Kansas Youth of the Year title in March.Burgess is a senior at Hutchinson High School. In mid-June he will travel to Dallas to compete for the regional title. Mr. Burgess will deliver his speech to the Board of Education at their meeting Monday night.The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.Each state-level Youth of the Year, including military, earns a $2,500 college scholarship. Each regional Youth of the Year, including regional military finalists, receives a $20,000 college scholarship. USD 308 conducting three separate surveys on facilities

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian School teacher Kara Sullivan is the Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month. Sullivan teaches Computer Science, Yearbook, FACS and an occasional math class. She said it is sometimes a challenge to teach computers to those that are digital natives.

"It can be difficult convincing them that they don't know what they think they know," Sullivan said. "They come in a lot of times and they think that they know what they are doing, then you try to show them. Sometimes, they do know, but a lot of times, they don't know. They are really good tech savvy, but they are not necessarily computer savvy."

It's not about getting them to use the computer, it's about getting the most out of the software they use.

"Tech savvy is, I can get on, I can download a game, I can play this game, I can access all this stuff," Sullivan said. "Computer savvy would be, being able to take the software and truly utilize it to the best of its ability. How do I make Word easier for me to do what I need to do? How do I do something in Word that I can then take over and put into PowerPoint?"

Sullivan thinks AI will make teaching easier, but it will make grading harder.&nbsp;

"There are some skills that are universal," Sullivan said. "You have to know the underlying, how to make this computer work for you, regardless if you can use AI or not."

Sullivan said there are ways to harness AI and make it a tool, as opposed to something that we are afraid of.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo is participating in AZA's "Party for the Planet" which is the largest combined Earth Day celebration in North America on Saturday, April 20 from noon to 4 p.m. 

Zoos and Aquariums all across the USA host events to help raise awareness about local conservation projects and teach the public ways to be a good neighbor to wildlife.&nbsp;

There are various activities going on throughout the day. The zoo will have various learning stations throughout where you can collect free goodies and animal trading cards in order to earn free fish food tickets (one per family group). 

Keepers will also be doing fun enrichment for the animals throughout the event. And last but not least, the Prairie Thunder Railroad will be running all day.

The event is free to the public and does not require registration to attend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School baseball team continued to prove its a program on the rise, as the Salthawks swept its doubleheader over Goddard on Friday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Hutchinson (10-7) has now won six games in a row for the first time since 2013. The Salthawks ended the Lions' eight-game winning streak after an 8-3 win in the first game. Hutchinson finished off the sweep with a 5-4 win in game two. Goddard (11-6) had beaten Andover Central twice on Tuesday, ending the Jaguars' quest for an unbeaten season.

Game 1: Hutchinson 8, Goddard 3 The Salthawks' pitching staff struck out 11 batters and only walked one in the five-run win over the Lions.

Starting pitcher Jack Davis earned the win, going 5 2/3 innings on the bump, striking out seven and walking the final batter he faced in the sixth inning. 

Lakin Franz inherited a bases loaded situation in the sixth in relief of Davis. The senior struck out the Goddard batter looking to end the threat. Franz then struck out the side in the seventh to secure the win, as he faced the 3-4-5 hitters.

Hutchinson scored all eight of its runs with two outs, two in the second, four in the third and two more in the fifth.

Gabe Valadez finished 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI single in the third inning. Carter Morgan reached safely in four of his five plate appearances, while driving in three runs. Cole Bleything finished 1 for 3 at the dish with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

⚾ Salthawks sweep Goddard, win sixth straight

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Join Hutch Rec for the Dillon Nature Center Earth Day Celebration, Saturday April 20 at the Jim Smith Family Playscape.

Citizens Bank of Kansas holding essay contest for Cosmosphere Camps

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County was lower for the month of March 2024.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went down three tenths of a percent to 3.1%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2023 was 3.1%.

There were 882 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.7% in March. This is unchanged from 2.7% in February and unchanged from 2.7% in March 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 6,400 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs&nbsp;increased by 5,500 over the month, while government increased by 900.

Since March 2023&nbsp;Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 21,800. This change is due to an increase of 16,400 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,400 government jobs.

Reno Co. unemployment down in March 2024

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said their Strong Community campaign was big again this year.

"It is very important," Foster said. "That's our annual fundraiser that helps us raise money to make the Y accessible for all. It helps us meet our mission. This year, our goal was $115,100. Last year, we raised just a little over $105,000. We just wrapped up our campaign last week. Our total was $136,985."

That just helps close the gap on money that the Y would use from the operating budget to meet the need. The need that they have is greater than the money that is raised.

"That will again, help us serve more kids and families and also provide free community based programs like Willpower Hour, Saturday Night at the Y and Livestrong."

In addition to the money raised through the campaign, the Hutchinson YMCA received grant support from the Hutchinson Community Foundation to serve additional people coming to the community.

"I just wanted to thank them and their Strategic Impact Committee for awarding us a $4900 grant," Foster said. "We've got some refugee families that have relocated to Hutch. We've been helping a few of them with the income-based financial assistance. They are going to provide us that funding to allow twelve families and five individuals to have an annual membership to the YMCA. They are covering half the cost for that and the Y will cover the other half."&nbsp;

YMCA 2024 campaign a success 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications team is celebrating their telecommunicators all week long.&nbsp;

"This week we are trying to put some faces to the voices that are often you know heard but nobody's ever seen," Assistant Director of Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications Stacie Gagnebin said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Telecommunicators are part of the 911 emergency dispatch system for reporting emergencies and requesting assistance from police, fire and medical services. 

A telecommunicator is the first person on the line to answer a 9-1-1 call and from there, they help the caller through each step of the emergency and coordination of services.&nbsp;

"Our telecommunicators are responsible for handling over 100,000 phone calls every year," Gagnebin said. "As well as 2 million radio transmissions each year and they also help service over 40 agencies in our community. They're really that vital link to the community and our responders."

Gagnebin said folks can help show appreciation for their local telecommunicators in Reno County by telling them thank you on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/HutchReno911">Facebook</a>.&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY — The exit ramp from northbound K-14 to Fourth Avenue is expected to close Monday, April 22, and reopen around 10 a.m. Thursday, April 25.

The entrance ramp from Fourth Avenue to northbound K-14 is expected to close Tuesday, April 23, and reopen around 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27.
