SALINA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end, but were able to salvage a split against Salina Central on Tuesday at Dean Evans Stadium.

The Salthawks lost game one 5-4, before bouncing back for a 5-1 win in game two.

Hutchinson is now 11-8 on the season and will travel to El Dorado on Thursday for a single game, beginning at 4 p.m. at McDonald Stadium.

Game 1: Salina Central 5, Hutchinson 4 The Salthawks scored two in the top of the seventh inning to keep the game alive, but in the end, the Mustangs secured the walk-off win on an RBI single to centerfield.&nbsp;

The loss ended the six-game winning streak for the Salthawks.

Hutchinson out-hit the Mustangs, nine to eight in the loss, including two-hit games from Caiden Beavers, Cole Bleything, Landon Parks and Jack Yoder.

The Salthawks took the 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout from Beavers. Salina Central tied the game up with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

The Mustangs plated three runs in the fourth inning on three hits and a Salthawk error, to lead 4-1 through four complete.

Hutchinson scored one more in the fifth to pull within 4-2 on an RBI single from Parks.

The Salthawks scored two in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game on four straight batters reaching safely, but were unable to grab the lead, stranding two baserunners.

After a strikeout from Beavers led off the bottom of the seventh, the next four Mustangs reached base safely to walk-off game one.

Beavers suffered the loss on the mound, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one run.

Jack Gordon for Salina Central was credited with the blown save and the win, after blowing the two-run lead, but also becoming the final Mustang pitcher used in the win.

Game 2: Hutchinson 5, Salina Central 1 Eastyn Keeler pitched a complete-game one-hit gem for the Salthawks, striking out four Mustang hitters. Keeler retired 13 consecutive Mustangs from the third inning until two outs in the seventh.

Morgan led off the game with a triple to centerfield, followed up by a strikeout and then an RBI single to left for Bleything to put the Salthawks on the board first.

Salina Central added their lone run in the third on an RBI groundout.&nbsp;

Hutchinson scored two more in the fifth inning, as Morgan broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to score Jack Davis and then an RBI single from Bleything made it 3-1.&nbsp;

The Salthawks tacked on their final runs of the game in the top of the seventh. Hutchinson had three straight base hits and four out of the final five batters. Parks and Mikah Giles each drove in a run.

⚾ Keeler complete game powers Salthawks to split at Salina Central

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 61-year-old man is dead after being struck by a train Tuesday afternoon in Hutchinson.

At 1:47 p.m.&nbsp;officers with Hutchinson Police Department, along with members of Hutchinson Fire Department and Reno County EMS, responded to Ave D and Washington Street in reference to a train versus pedestrian.

	When officers arrived, they found Daniel L Raya injured on the railroad tracks. Officers attempted life-saving measures on Mr. Raya but were unsuccessful. Mr. Raya was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.

"Racing will start at 7 p.m.," Nightingale said. "Gates will open at 5 p.m. There are several ways to get tickets. They'll scan you in as you go through the gate, or you can buy them right there at the gate as you come in and you've just got to remember, we'll remind everybody, we've went cashless. The reason we've done that is so I can have good validation reports of scans and show the Fair Board exactly how many people came through the gate."

Adult General Admission tickets are $18. Kids General Admission tickets are $12. Pit passes are $35.

"I hope we do have the support from the public," Nightingale said. "I tell everybody, once you go racing one time, you're hooked. You'll go again. If you've never been, you want to come out and check it out this Friday and see the fun and excitement. Yeah, there's some noise behind it, but there's a lot of action and a lot of stuff going on at the same time."

One of the big challenges for Nightingale is that he cannot figure the concession revenue in his financial calculation.

"My first initial proposal that I put to the Fair Board did have concessions in it," Nightingale said. "They took that away from me. All that did was take how many more people that I've got to put in the stands to, what do you want to say, break even."

First 2024 event at Fairgrounds racetrack is Friday

RENO COUNTY —The exit ramp from northbound K-14 to Wilson Road is expected to close Monday, April 29, and reopen around 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1.

The entrance ramp from Wilson Road to northbound K-14 is expected to close Tuesday, April 30, and reopen around 10 a.m. Friday, May 3.

During the closures, motorists should seek other routes.

The ramp work is part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

During the work, ramp closures will occur at times. K-14 traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

Iowa Civil Contracting Inc., of Victor, Iowa, is the primary contractor for the $3,559,085 project.

Ramp work continues with Wilson Road starting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Community Meeting at Morgan Elementary is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. This is the final meeting in a series of over 20 community meetings in the past three weeks.

The Facilities Steering Committee of Hutchinson Public Schools has been meeting since January 2023 to determine district facility priorities. 

Community input is invaluable in the following steps as the committee develops a District Facilities Plan that meets the current and future needs and desires of the USD 308 community. 

Tuesday's session will include a presentation of committee findings, analysis of the current facilities status, identified areas for improvement, and concepts to develop a comprehensive District Facilities Plan that aligns with the District’s objectives. 

Information gathered from the committee findings and community meetings will be presented to the USD 308 Board of Education in May along with a comprehensive District Facilities Plan. 

The session is free to attend and open to the public. Final community meeting on facilities Tuesday night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Lesser Known Lovelies Plant Sale at Dillon Nature Center is coming up April 26 and 27. The Friday night event is for DNC members only, but you can buy memberships on Friday night at the sale. Friday night is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with Saturday from 8 a.m. until the plants are gone.

"These are annual flowers," said Betty Taylor, who helps with the sale. "They need to be planted every year. They bloom and bloom and bloom, much different than perennials that have to store some energy in their roots."

Many of the plants for sale that are not available in most local greenhouses are heat and drought tolerant. Each pack will be priced at $4.50, with rarer plants in packs of four and more common ones in packs of six.

"We have a couple kind of unique things," said James Taylor. "One that I like is Abelmoschus. That is actually in the same genus as okra. It only grows about 12-18 inches tall. It has red flowers. It's really kind of a neat plant. It's no longer commercially available. We have to save our own seed. Nobody else is going to have that."

The Friday night event is for DNC members only, but you can buy memberships on Friday night at the sale. Friday night is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with Saturday from 8 a.m. until the plants are gone."These are annual flowers," said Betty Taylor, who helps with the sale. "They need to be planted every year. They bloom and bloom and bloom, much different than perennials that have to store some energy in their roots."Many of the plants for sale that are not available in most local greenhouses are heat and drought tolerant. Each pack will be priced at $4.50, with rarer plants in packs of four and more common ones in packs of six."We have a couple kind of unique things," said James Taylor. "One that I like is Abelmoschus. That is actually in the same genus as okra. It only grows about 12-18 inches tall. It has red flowers. It's really kind of a neat plant. It's no longer commercially available. We have to save our own seed. 2024 Lesser Known Lovelies is this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager said they are always looking for more people to work at the polls on election day.

"In Reno County, we hire around 200 board workers every election to work all of the polling locations," Fager said. "We do require that you go through two hours of training prior to working at the polls, but we do pay $7.25 an hour for regular judges and $8.75 for supervising judges."

That translates to $120 to $150 for the day.

"We do try to make all of our boards bipartisan," Fager said. "We try to have at least one Republican, one Democrat. We can also use unaffiliated for that, as well."

They do try to man bigger polling places with more board workers in presidential election years, as this one is.

"We currently have 27 polling locations," Fager said. "One of those includes the Fairgrounds, which is one of our main locations. It's got several. Most of the city of Hutchinson goes to the Fairgrounds to vote."

Many poll workers do it every election. Some have worked for the county for 20 plus years. If you'd like to find out more, call Fager's office at (620) 694-2954.

Fager: Poll workers needed for upcoming elections

CINCINNATI (AP) —Supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons said Monday they will sell more of their stores in an effort to quell the federal government’s concerns about their proposed merger.

The companies now plan to sell 579 Kroger and Albertsons stores in markets where they overlap to C&amp;S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire grocery supplier and operator, for $2.9 billion. Under the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kroger-albertsons-merger-cs-wholesale-grocer-401520f2a25ea2ae5fd06be4973b7c48">initial divestiture plan</a>, announced in September, C&amp;S had planned to purchase 413 stores for $1.9 billion.

It’s unclear if the new plan will satisfy regulators. In February, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kroger-albertsons-antitrust-grocery-merger-competition-71b47dc86ec7449f29b2b488c1d3f9de">sued to block</a>&nbsp;the $24.6 billion merger between the grocery giants, saying the lack of competition would lead to higher grocery prices and lower wages for workers.

The FTC also said the initial plan to divest 413 stores to C&amp;S was “inadequate” and would give C&amp;S a hodgepodge of unconnected stores and brands, leaving it ill-equipped to compete with a combined Kroger and Albertsons.

Under the updated plan, Kroger would sell its Haggen banner to C&amp;S. C&amp;S would also license the Albertsons banner in California and Wyoming and the Safeway banner in Arizona and Colorado. C&amp;S would also get access to some private-label brands in the stores. Under the proposal, C&amp;S would keep all of the stores open and honor any labor agreements.

“We are confident this expanded divestiture package will provide the stores, supporting assets and expert operators needed to ensure these stores continue to successfully serve their communities for many generations to come,” C&amp;S CEO Eric Winn said in a statement.

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — A sealing program is scheduled to begin May 1 to resurface two Harvey County roads.

North Meridian Road between West Broadway Street and North Hesston Road will be resurfaced, as well as Northeast 60th Street between K-15 Highway and U.S. Highway 50.

Both roadways will remain open to traffic during the projects. Traffic will be controlled and directed by flaggers and pilot car. Residents will continue to have access to their properties throughout the projects.

The projects will be completed by Vance Brothers. The projects are anticipated to be done in 10 days, contingent on weather.

Harvey County road sealing projects begin May 1

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Join the Hutchinson Art Center for make-and-take art projects for children on April 27 at the Hutchinson Art Center. 

This is an opportunity for children aged 6 through 12 to create their own work of art! Students will be divided into two groups: Group A (1:00 to 2:30 p.m.) and Group B (3:00 to 4:30 p.m.), with each group covering different skills. Each group art class costs $8 per child.

Group A and B will both be designing a dragon eye on paper using colored pencils and complimentary colors. After the initial design on paper is complete children will get to recreate their dragon eye using Model Magic and metallic paint.

Children will learn different modeling techniques such as hand building, making slabs, coiling, pinching, and mark making with various tools to create textures and dragon scales all while we enjoy listening to the symphonic soundtrack from the movie "How to Train Your Dragon"!

Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up their child for either Group A or Group B depending on skill level and interest. In general, the Group A project is simpler and aimed toward children aged 6-7, while the Group B project is a bit more complex and is aimed toward children aged 8-12.

McPherson County Housing Study survey in its final days

PRATT, Kan. — Miss Kansas 2024 will be crowned on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the 2024 Miss Kansas Competition.&nbsp; The Miss Kansas Organization (MKO) is proud to welcome 26 Miss Kansas delegates from the State of Kansas to the competition, which will take place on the campus of Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas.&nbsp;

The Miss Kansas Organization Executive Director, Stephanie Harris remarked, “We are very pleased with the number of intelligent, ambitious, and talented young women who have qualified for the competition,” Harris said.&nbsp; “It will be a challenging task for the judges to choose the next Miss Kansas.

During the competition, each delegate will also discuss her chosen platform, a social or community issue of concern to herself and our society at large.&nbsp; The winner of the 2024 Miss Kansas Competition will be awarded scholarship funds for her college or graduate school education.&nbsp; In addition, she will receive many gifts provided by MKO’s generous sponsors.&nbsp; Other special awards given during the competition include the Community Service Initiative Scholarship, acknowledging a 2024 delegate for their outstanding achievements in their platform work.&nbsp;

During her year of service, Miss Kansas 2024 will travel across the state of Kansas speaking to government officials, business leaders, community groups, and the citizens of Kansas, about her platform and encouraging them to become involved in her cause.&nbsp; She will represent Kansas when she competes for the Miss America title in January 2025.

“I have truly enjoyed my year of service as Miss Kansas and am proud to have traveled the state of Kansas raising awareness for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Office, Lead for America, Envision, Inc., and promoting my platform of “One Vision is Not the Only Vision,” said Miss Kansas 2023, Courtney Wages.&nbsp; “I know that the personal and professional skills I have gained from this experience will help me as I continue throughout my life.”

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The South Hutchinson City Council appointed&nbsp;Robert F. Wylie for a vacant position on the council at their regular meeting Monday night.&nbsp;

President of Council Dina Brislin motioned to appoint Wylie and council member Kyle Cokeley seconded the motion.&nbsp;

Another important item on the agenda in South Hutchinson was action item No. 3 which included the approval of a contract with Plot Marketing on phase 2 of the city's rebranding project.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/df72825a-d6b2-411e-90e2-64b4434a12af">In February, City Administrator Jeff Schenk told Hutch Post that the city was working on an entire rebranding project that includes the South Hutchinson logo, website branding, messaging and color schemes.</a>

The council decided to table the contract for phase 2.&nbsp;Cokeley motioned to approve the contract and it failed for lack of a second.&nbsp;

The decision to table discussion for the approval of the new contract had to do with what approach was most effective. Council member Valerie Griffin expressed concerns for the cost of branding with the majority of it going towards a new logo. 

"I'm still kind of stuck on why that is the cost that it is," Griffin said.&nbsp;

Schenk explained that the cost would be about $25,000 if Plot Marketing were to create their own design samples for the rebranding. He said if the council were to present their own designs to Plot, the price would go down. He provided council members with an example from the city of Newton. It cost Newton $11,000 because the city already had pre-designed ideas created for the marketing company to work with.

Schenk said his preferred method for the project is to get feedback from the community and then present that information to Plot.&nbsp;

"Personally I think&nbsp; it's more organic going that route and then using that to build it out," Schenk said. "I think a couple of creative people might come up with ideas. But a random person like me who is not creative at all, without really being able to offer any ideas for logo design, so I wouldn't feel like I was included in it at all. The way that I think I'm proposing is because bringing somebody else in, they are also the ones that have to decipher all of that information and its coming in from Facebook. If we do it the other way, where we are going to make recommendations, then we are going to need to find some staff with time to decipher through everything, come up with a chart, and present it and go through a board of picking it and&nbsp; deciphering which information we want to keep in."&nbsp;

South Hutchinson appoints council member, discusses rebranding project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters had multiple calls going on at once Monday afternoon. The first was just before 5 p.m. in the 5400 block of East 4th. 

Crews were able to see smoke shortly after leaving their stations. A home was fully engulfed in fire being driven by wind sustained at 28 miles per hour gusting to 43 miles per hour.

The wind spread the fire north from the single story home to two large brush piles and a vehicle and started two small brush fires. Hutchinson Fire started rural water operations and upgraded the alarm. Outside departments were requested for water supply.&nbsp;

The East 4th fire was put out by approximately 6:30 p.m. However, while they were working that fire, another call came in in the 200 block of West Avenue F for another structure fire. Mutual aid was requested and some apparatus from the original fire responded. Fortunately, the second fire was small and handled quickly.

Crews are still checking hot spots and making sure the gusty winds don't allow for reignition, so they will be on scene for a few more hours. Please avoid the area, as they are still at work.

The three adults and one child that occupy the home on East 4th were not home at the time of the fire. Due to the extent of the damage, fire crews are still looking for pets that may have escaped. No injuries were reported and the investigation will take a while after everything is fully put out.

Many departments came together to help. Hutchinson Fire specifically thanks Reno County Emergency Communications, Reno County Sheriff's Officers, Reno County EMS, Hutchinson Public Works, Kansas Gas Service, Evergy, Reno County Emergency Management, Buhler Fire Department, Reno County Fire District 8, Reno County Fire District 9, South Hutchinson Fire Department and the American Red Cross.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson announced Monday the appointment of Carissa Paxton as the new Housing Coordinator, effective April 22, 2024.

Paxton, a long-time resident of Hutchinson, brings extensive experience and a strong commitment to community development to her new role. With a background in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from Hutchinson Community College, and ongoing studies in Human Resources Management, Carissa is well-prepared to lead Hutchinson's housing initiatives.

Mary Grace Clements, Interim City Manager, expressed her enthusiasm for Carissa's appointment, stating, "We are excited to welcome Carissa Paxton as our new Housing Coordinator. Her proven leadership and dedication to community service make her an ideal choice for this critical role. Carissa's expertise will be instrumental in advancing our city's housing goals."

Prior to joining the Strategic Growth Department, Carissa served as a residential real estate agent at Reece Nichols of South Central Kansas and Youth Leadership Program Coordinator at Rise Up Reno Prevention Network. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The gates to Cow Creek were closed until April 21st for the Creekside clean-up day that took place on Saturday.

This closure reduced the water flow to facilitate the removal of trash and debris from the creek bed by the clean-up crews. 

12 volunteers gathered at Bernard White Park on Saturday, cleaning up the park and the stretch of Cow Creek adjacent to the park.

Creekside neighborhood cleans up Cow Creek Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Get ready for an electrifying night of rock as Pop Evil takes the stagewith Diamante at the 2024 Kansas State Fair on Friday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Formed in North Muskegon, Michigan, in 2001, Pop Evil has been a dominant force in the rock scene for over two decades. Led by frontman Leigh Kakaty, the band has released a string of hit albums and singles, including their latest release, "Skeletons."

With powerful anthems like "Eye of the Storm" and "Paranoid (Crash &amp; Burn)," Pop Evil continues to captivate audiences with their energetic performances and uplifting message.

Diamante, a rising star in the rock and alternative music scene, will be opening for Pop Evil. With her show-stopping voice and runway-ready fashion, Diamante brings a new fire to the genre with her signature "sparkle rock" sound. Having toured extensively with bands like Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, and The Pretty Reckless, she has honed her craft and solidified her&nbsp;reputation as a powerhouse performer.

The Kansas State Fair is pleased to unveil an improvement to the Grandstand seating that promises to enhance the overall event experience for attendees. This year, the stage will be repositioned to create space for an extended party pit in the lower track area. This expansion not only boosts overall capacity but also provides more concert enthusiasts the chance to&nbsp;enjoy the excitement up close.

Reserved seating in the Grandstand is $40 and $30.

Get up close to the stage! The Track Party Pit area gives concertgoers the opportunity to be on the floor, standing right in front of the stage. Each ticket is $65.
