With the release of the Jayhawk Conference Division I Softball teams on Monday, the list of historical achievements by the 2022 Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons grew even larger.

With a total of eight Blue Dragons selected, that is the most players to earn postseason awards in one season in team history. Also, head coach Jaime Rose earned her first league Coach of the Year award, sharing the honor with Butler’s Doug Chance.

Pitcher Riley Wertz was named the Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year as well as being named to the all-KJCCC first team. Freshman catcher Allie Stipsits was a first-team all-league selection.

Third baseman Natalie Bevan, outfielders Haley Miller and Carley Sterneker and pitcher Emily Munson were named to the All-KJCCC second team. Shortstop Madison Grimes, outfielder Easton Swanson and second baseman Ella Dougherty were named honorable mention.

The Blue Dragons completed one of the best seasons in team history, finishing third in the Region VI Tournament on Sunday in Dodge City. The No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons were 41-8 overall and finished second in the Jayhawk Conference with a 29-3 record, the conference win total was another team record.

RILEY WERTZ – Freshman of the Year, 1st Team

Riley Wertz is the second-straight KJCCC Freshman of the Year for the Blue Dragons, joining Madison Grimes in 2021.

Wertz was the Blue Dragon ace coming out of the bullpen in all 36 appearances she made in 2022– fourth most in single-season history.

Wertz posted a 13-1 record with a 1.35 earned-run average this season with a Blue Dragon single-season and career record and NJCAA-high nine saves. Wertz won her first 10 decisions of the season and her ERA is the first sub-2.00 mark since Holley Kelley in 2016.

The freshman right-handed pitcher from Maize struck out 152 batters in 82 2-3 innings. Wertz’s 152 strikeouts ranked sixth on the Blue Dragon single-season strikeout list. She had at least one strikeout in all 36 appearances.

Wertz set a Blue Dragon single-game record with 18 strikeouts against Garden City on March 19. She had an 11-strikeout performance over 4 2-3 innings against Murray State on Feb. 19.

Opponents hit a scant .144 off of Wertz this season. She allowed only 40 hits, 23 runs and 35 walks in 82 2-3 innings.

Wertz also had plenty to contribute at the plate as the Blue Dragon designated player for most of the season.

Wertz hit .339 (39 for 115) with a team-high eight home runs and 28 RBIs. She also drew a team-high 23 walks this season.

JAIME ROSE – Co-Coach of the Year

The 2022 season will be one of the most memorable for the Blue Dragons’ 18th-year head coach, who earned the first KJCCC Coach of the Year award in her career.

The Blue Dragons finished 41-8 – the 41 wins are the second most in team history and the eight losses tied for the fewest in program history. The Dragons’ 29 KJCCC wins are also an all-time program record.

Region VI champion Butler is 46-2 entering the NJCAA Tournament. The only losses the Grizzlies sustained came against Rose’s Blue Dragons – 6-5 on March 5 in El Dorado and 3-2 on April 6 at Fun Valley.

The Blue Dragons had two 13-game winning streaks this season, tying for the fourth longest win streaks in program history.

When the Blue Dragons jumped into the NJCAA Division I rankings, that was the first time the Dragons were ranked since 2018 and the first Division I ranking since 1989. The Blue Dragons were No. 15 in the final national ranking.

Already the program’s all-time coaching victories leader, Rose reached milestone win No. 500 with the Blue Dragons after a 10-7 victory at Dodge City on March 7.

While her offense steadily improved through her freshman season, it was apparent early that Allie Stipsits was a tremendous catcher.

The freshman from Olathe threw out 34 percent of base stealers this season, nailing 17 baserunners. She also fielded .988 with only four errors in 328 fielding chances and had only three passed balls.

Offensively, Stipsits came on strong and finished with a .364 batting average (51 of 140) with 15 doubles, four home runs and 23 RBIs.

Stipsits had a 4-for-4 game against Barton in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Great Bend on March 25. In the first game of that doubleheader, Stipsits had a clutch game-tying two-run double in a four-run rally in the seventh inning in a come-from-behind 7-5 victory.

The third-year sophomore from Augusta had a strong season hitting cleanup and playing third base for the Blue Dragons this season.

Bevan hit .320 (48 for 150) with five home runs and a team-high 46 RBIs. Bevan added 11 doubles and a triple in slugging .507 this season.

Bevan fielded .917 at third base this season.

Bevan concluded her Blue Dragon career second in all-time RBIS with 115, tied for 10th with 14 home runs, seven in total hits with 125 and tied for sixth in runs scored with 94. She also tied for fourth with 33 career doubles.

The Blue Dragon center fielder from Buhler displayed a little of everything in her sophomore season from her speed around the bases with 24 bunt hits, three triples and inside-the-park home run to her tremendous game-saving catch in deep center field against Butler to preserve a 3-2 victory on April 6.

Miller was the Blue Dragons’ leading hitter this season with a .401 batting average (63 for 157). She had an on-base percentage of .429 with a perfect 16 of 16 in stolen base attempts. Miller had eight doubles and a career-high six home runs this season. She scored a team-high 54 runs and had 30 RBIs.

Miller’s 63 hits were second most on the Blue Dragons. She was one of three Hutchinson players to reach 60 this this season.

Miller has 17 multi-hit games, including a career-high four hits against the Ottawa University JV on Jan. 29. She had five three-hit games.

Making the move from first base to left field this season, Carley Sterneker didn’t stop contributing at the plate in earning all-conference honors for a second-straight season.

Sterneker was third on the team with a .383 batting average (59 for 154) with 14 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 39 RBIs.

The Maize South product had six games of three or more hits. She had a season-high four RBIs in March 2 in an 8-0 win over Colby.

Sterneker had a season-high four hits against the Ottawa University JV on Jan. 29 and drove in a season-high four runs against Colby on March 2.

A freshman from Omaha, Nebraska, Emily Munson quickly assumed the No. 1 starting slot in the Blue Dragon rotation. After a couple of shaky starts early in the season, the left-hander settled in and produced a tremendous season.

Munson finished the season 10-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 23 starts and 28 overall appearances. Munson logged a team-high 101 1-3 innings and allowed 85 hits, 42 runs and 26 walks while striking out 56. Opposing batters hit .221 against her.

Munson had the only four complete games of the season. Her best effort was a seven-inning complete-game one-hitter against Dodge City on April 13 at Fun Valley. Munson struck out a season-high six batters twice this season against Barton and Pratt.

From March 16 on, Munson had an ERA of 2.00 over 19 appearances and 76 2-3 innings.

MADISON GRIMES – Honorable Mention

While her numbers weren’t what they were during a second-team All-America season in 2021, Madison Grimes was still the Blue Dragons’ team leader without a doubt this season.

Grimes hit .370 (61 of 165) with five home runs and 41 RBIs. She had 13 doubles, a triple and scored 44 runs. Grimes led the Blue Dragons with 23 stolen bases in 24 attempts. Grimes closed the season on an eight-game hitting streak. She had a season-high three hits twice, going 3 for 4 with RBIs and a home run against Dodge City in the Region VI opener on May 6.

Defensively, Grimes had a .953 fielding percentage with nine errors in 213 defensive chances.

Grimes set Blue Dragon career records for batting average (.460), RBIs (115) and runs scored (119).

EASTON SWANSON – Honorable Mention

Battling injuries throughout the 2022 season, Easton Swanson still had a strong season in right field for the Blue Dragons.

The sophomore from Olathe finished the season hitting .305 (32 for 105) with five doubles, a homer and 17 RBIs. Swanson had a season-high three hits, going 3 for 4 with a go-ahead single in the top of the seventh in a 7-6 Blue Dragon victory at Seward county on April 27.

Swanson had a memorable final at-bat as a Blue Dragon with a solo home run on Sunday against Seward County.

ELLA DOUGHERTY – Honorable Mention

Hitting in the leadoff spot since Game 1, Ella Dougherty had a team-high 67 hits and hit .399 (67 for 168) for the season.

The freshman from Cross Timbers, Missouri, had 14 doubles, one triple and two home runs this season, scoring a team-high 51 runs and driving in 31 from the leadoff spot. Dougherty had five stolen bases and had an on-base percentage of .466. She had a .985 fielding percentage with two errors in 131 fielding chances.

Dougherty put together a 17-game hitting streak, the fourth-longest streak in Blue Dragon history this season. She hit .474 in two-out situations with 12 two-out RBIs. She had three four-hit games and four other three-hit games.

All-Jayhawk softball teams announced

The Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team starts the 2022 NJCAA Division I National Golf Tournament in a position it has never been in before – defending national champions.

One year ago, the Blue Dragons played a tremendous final six holes to complete its national championship run in Lubbock, Texas. This year, the Blue Dragons return to the Lone Star State for their title defense, playing the 7,260-yard par-72 Odessa Country Club.

The Blue Dragons qualified for their 21st consecutive and 24th overall NJCAA National Tournament by finishing second in the Central District Championship two weeks ago in Hastings, Nebraska. The Blue Dragons also won the Jayhawk Conference and Region VI team championships along the way and are ranked No. 3 in the final national polls.

Hutchinson will be paired with No. 1 Midland College and No. 2 Central Alabama for the first two rounds of the national tournament. Tuesday tee times are from 7:30 to 8:06 a.m. The Dragons will tee off on Wednesday from 1:15 to 1:51 p.m.

In addition to the defending the team championship, Blue Dragon sophomore Ben Partridge is the defending NJCAA individual champion. Last season, Partridge defeated teammate Harry Crockett in a four-hole playoff to add that honor to a list of honors that included the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman of the Year and Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Awards.

This season, Partridge enters the national tournament as a two-time Jayhawk Conference champion. Crockett comes into nationals after winning back-to-back individual championships.

The Blue Dragon duo on Monday were named 2022 PING first-team All-Americans for the second-straight season. They were joined on the first time by Central Alabama’s Hayden Carner, Odessa’s Sangha Park and Eastern Wyoming’s Brendon Thomas.

Partridge and Crockett are the 12th and 13th PING All-Americans in Blue Dragon men’s golf history.

Both Partridge and Crockett enter the national tournament with an adjusted stroke average of 70.88, tied for the third best in the NJCAA this season. Partridge is No. 1 and Crockett is No. 5 in the GolfStat.com NJCAA individual player rankings.

The Blue Dragons will have one other sophomore and two freshmen to try and complete the title defense. Blake Saffell has a stroke average of 73.80, Addison Alonzo is averaging 74.17 and Dominic Clemons is averaging 75.47.

The NJCAA National tournament is a four-round tournament which runs Tuesday through Friday.

Blue Dragons open title defense Tuesday in Texas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College announced that Jennifer Wiens, Professor of Chemistry, has been selected as the 2021-22 Dragon Educator of the Year.

Wiens was selected from nominees from all academic areas by the HutchCC Student Government Association (SGA) for the honor. The instructors are nominated by Hutchinson Community College students, and then complete a selection and personal interview process conducted by SGA. Wiens received her honor at the college’s commencement on May 6.

Wiens teaches General Chemistry lectures and labs as well as Ecology of Environmental Problems, along with serving as an academic advisor.

Wiens received her Bachelor of Science in Fisheries &amp; Wildlife Biology-Fisheries Biology from Kansas State University in 1994 and earned her Masters in Biology from Kansas State in 1996.

Wiens honored by HutchCC students

Connie Sue Dowers, 81, passed away May 6, 2022, at her home, surrounded by loved ones.&nbsp; A lifelong Hutchinson resident, she happily lived life as a wife, mother, friend, and secretary for the family’s business.

Connie was born September 24, 1940, the only child of Delmar and Helen Doty.&nbsp; She graduated from Hutchinson High School and Drauns Business College in Springfield, MO.

Connie met the love of her life on a double date to the movies in 1961.&nbsp; She and Billie Ray Dowers married two years later and celebrated 58 years of marriage last October.

She is survived by:&nbsp; husband, Billie of Hutchinson; daughter, Tammie Cox (Brian) of Lee’s Summit, MO; sons, Terry (Pam Shirley), Randy, and Ricky (Lacy), all of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Connie was preceded in death by her parents.

Merle O. “Bones” Nay, 91, died May 6, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society – Hutchinson Village. He was born July 25, 1930, in Wichita, to Harold S. and Helen J. (McCormick) Nay.

Bones graduated from Wichita North High School in 1949, where he was president of his senior class. He attended Northwestern University before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1950. After his discharge in 1953, Bones attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1957.

He coached and taught in three state high schools, served one year as Activities Director at Hutchinson High School, four years as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Butler County Community College, Athletic Director at St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Athletic Director at Dodge City Community College, and Assistant Athletic Director at Kansas State University. Bones also served as State Director of the Kansas Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has given over 300 presentations to a wide variety of events throughout the Midwest.

After retirement, Bones received his pastoral license and served as Senior Adult Pastor at First Church of the Nazarene in Hutchinson.

In 1952, he married Georgia Norene Prock in Wichita. They shared 66 years of marriage before her death on April 29, 2019.

Bones is survived by: his daughter, Cynde Kitch (Rick) of Hutchinson; grandsons, Ross Kitch of Hutchinson, Scott Kitch (Andrea) of Manhattan; step-grandchildren, Junilda Scribner (Daniel), Jeremy Tucker (Toni); great-granddaughters, Liby Lee Kitch, Kinley Grace Kitch; great-grandson, Kasen Scott Kitch; and step-great-grandchildren, Alex Marie, Talan, and Ty Scribner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Christopher Nay.

Cremation has taken place. Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2022, at First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps honor guard. The service will be livestreamed and the link to view it will be in his obituary on the funeral home website.

DODGE CITY – One of the best seasons in Hutchinson Community College softball history came to a close on Sunday as sixth-seeded Seward County upset the No. 15 Blue Dragons for a second-straight day in the Region VI Softball Tournament on Sunday at Legends Park.

Seward County’s Ashley Low hit a sixth-inning grand slam to break a 1-all tie and defeat the Blue Dragons 5-2 Sunday morning.

The Blue Dragons close the 2022 season with a 41-8 record. The 41 wins are the second-most in Blue Dragon team history. The eight losses tie the 2016 Blue Dragons for the fewest losses in program history. The Blue Dragons end their season for the second-straight year in the Region VI Tournament Losers’ Bracket final.

Trailing 1-0 in the first inning the Blue Dragons immediately answered when Haley Miller hit an opposite-field home run to left to tie the game.

The game remained tied at 1-1 into the sixth inning. Seward County loaded the bases with three-straight hits before Low lined a rise ball over the center-field fence for a grand slam and a 5-1 lead.

Hutchinson cut the Saints’ lead to 5-2 when Easton Swanson led off the bottom of the seventh of a solo home run to left field. The Blue Dragons brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but Seward County rolled a game-ending 1-6-3 double play to close out the Blue Dragons.

Ella Dougherty, Miller and Allie Stipsits had two hits each to lead the Blue Dragons, who left seven runners on base.

Emily Munson started in the pitching circle for the Blue Dragons and allowed a run in two innings. Kiersten Weitze (9-2) went 3 1-3 innings. She retired eight in a row, but gave up two runs on three hits and was tagged with the loss. Riley Wertz worked 0.2 innings and Sadie Loney pitched a scoreless seventh for the Blue Dragons.

HutchCC softball season over after 3rd place finish at Region VI

Virginia Beth Feerer, 94, of Hutchinson, passed away Monday, May 3, 2022, at Hospice House of Hutchinson.&nbsp;

She was born February 15, 1928, at Glen Elder, to Major De and Bessie (Slaven) Vint.&nbsp;&nbsp; The youngest of 7 children, Beth attended a country school near her grandfather’s homestead, where she was raised, and graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1945.&nbsp; She then attended Manhattan Bible College, in Manhattan, where she met Virgil Carl Feerer.&nbsp; They were married at the college chapel on August 20, 1946. &nbsp;Virgil was ordained into the Christian ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Beth was a full partner in his ministries for the next 45 years.

Together, they served the Oak Grove Christian Church in Monticello, IN, while Virgil was attending Butler School of Religion.&nbsp; &nbsp;In Kansas, they served churches in Attica, Conway Springs, Girard, Madison, Beloit, Hiawatha and Osborne.&nbsp; They served the Tipton/Latham, Missouri Pastoral Unity for 2 years until Virgil’s death in 1991.

After her husband’s passing, Beth continued as a Christian (Disciples) minister on her own, serving as chaplain at Lenoir in Columbia, Missouri.&nbsp; She served as a supply pastor around Columbia for a time, and then as pastor at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church near Higbee, MO. Beth moved in retirement to Bella Vista, AR for a time before settling in Hutchinson, to be near her daughter, Elizabeth and family.

She was a 61-year member of PEO, most recently Chapter BL, and a member of Park Place Christian Church in Hutchinson at the time of her death. Beth was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and in recent months especially enjoyed her great-great-grandson.

She and Virgil were the loving parents of four children: Virgil Vint Feerer, Warren Carl Feerer (Pam), Elizabeth Faye Kellogg, and Marjorie Elaine Dickson (Lynn), and they survive.&nbsp; Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, &nbsp;Sherri McNeel,&nbsp; Delia Feerer (Gana Kodira), Stacy Sebby (Mike), Trent Svoboda, Jeff Kellogg (Crimson), Michael Kellogg (Alyssa Davidson), Jon Ashley Kellogg, Adam Popp, &nbsp;Lucas Dickson (Amber), Corrine Dickson, and Aundrea Kleinhagen (Chuck); nineteen great-grandchildren, Onjya Gadbois (Josh), Lexi Pedley, Micaela Sebby, Jessica Sebby, Cappra Svoboda, Braeden Svoboda, Avery Kellogg (Lexxi), Alex Butler, Skylar Butler, AnnMayre Kellogg, Braeden Kellogg, Levi Dickson, Miles Dickson, Ky’Andre Miller, Kosse Miller, Kingston Miller, Alison Kleinhagen, Amelia Kleinhagen, and Charlie Kleinhagen; one great-great-grandson, Hayden Avery Kellogg; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was predeceased by: her parents; husband, Virgil; son-in-law, Bill Kellogg; great-grandson, Kaleb Miller; and her six siblings and their spouses, John Vint (Wilma), Duane Vint (Lucile), Marjorie Porter (Ernest), Dorothy McKinney (Vaden), Vinton Vint (Louise), and Emily Gales; and nieces and nephews.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School held its annual awards assembly Wednesday at the Salthawk Activity Center. Among the many awards handed out was the Young American Award presented to Ainsley Trunkhill. The Young American Award is the oldest award at HHS, with this being its 90th award. The award was started by the Oswald family in the 1920s.&nbsp;

The Davis Award winners for 2022 are Ainsley Trunkhill and Zoey Shipley. Each will receive $6,000 per year for four years. The other four finalists were Melaina Goss, Konner Fleming, Kimberly Villanueva and Thaddaeus Blakley. Each will receive $4,000 per year for four years. This is the 69th year for the Davis Foundation scholarships. During that time, more than 200 students have received scholarships. When the first scholarships were awarded in the 1950s, the scholarships were $500 a year for four years.

This year's Ronn Roehm Education Scholarship winner is Jace Rimbey. The scholarship is in honor of long-time HHS principal Ronn Roehm.&nbsp;

The Leaders of Today and Tomorrow winners were Thaddaeus Blakley, Bostyn Castor, Dalton Estes, Stella Foster, Amelia Ontjes, Ben Patterson, Noah Raigosa, Ainsley Trunkhill and Nicholas Zizumbo.

HHS awards assembly held Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College will celebrate its annual commencement ceremony this Friday, May 6, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. and recognize students graduating with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of General Studies, Associate of Applied Science and/or Certificates of Technical Education.

“The academic achievements of our students deserve to be properly recognized and celebrated,” HutchCC President Dr. Carter File said. “We are excited to gather with our graduates along with their friends and families to honor them.”

Hutchinson Community College graduation is Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Buhler High School student is one of 19 Kansas school students to receive a scholarship from the Kansas Grain and Feed Association’s (KGFA) scholarship program. Tyler Adams will receive $1,500 to help fund his college education.&nbsp;

The KGFA increased its total amount of annual financial aid by $2,000 and awarded nearly $30,000 in total.&nbsp;

The scholarship committee, composed of KGFA’s membership, received more than 150 applications and granted the 19 awards based on merit and equitable geographic locations throughout the state.

Students must be a graduating Kansas high school senior, with excellent academic credentials who are planning to attend any Kansas four-year university, community college or technical school.

Adams wins KGFA scholarship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two outstanding Hutchinson Community College students were recognized as the 2022 Young Kansan Award winners at a ceremony on campus on April 27. The students will also be honored during the College’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 6.

Kaitlyn Seiwert (Murdock) and Andrew Bergmeier (Hutchinson) were selected from a field of students nominated for the honor. The Young Kansan award recognizes the outstanding male and female graduate each year at Hutchinson Community College, and is chosen by a vote of the faculty and administration at the college. Each winner received a plaque and a cash honorarium in recognition of their achievements.

Seiwert is from Murdock and attended Kingman High School. She is graduating with an Associate of Science degree. During her time at HutchCC, she was the editor of the Dragon’s Tale Magazine and was selected to represent Student Publications in the 2022 Winter Homecoming Court.&nbsp;

Bergmeier is from Hutchinson and is a graduate of Trinity Catholic High School. He will be graduating with an Associate of Science degree. During his time at HutchCC, he has served as an Ambassador in the Admissions department, has been a Leadership Scholar, worked in the Athletic department and has been involved with the Ping Pong Club.&nbsp;

Patricia Jane Hostetler, 76, of McPherson, Kansas passed away at 3:11 a.m., Sunday, May 1st, 2022 at Via Christi ,St. Francis , Wichita.

Patricia was born in Stafford, on May 6, 1945, a daughter of Mabel (Chiles) and Robert Claire Jimison. Pat attended Stafford grade school and graduated from Stafford High School, Stafford, in 1963. She then attended and graduated from Emporia State College, Emporia, Kansas with her Bachelors Degree in Business. Through the years Pat worked for N.C.R.A, McPherson, Kansas, Johnson Music Center and Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson. Pat enjoyed Kansas State sports especially football, reading, ,music, camping, traveling, going on little adventures with her daughters, her pets and spending time with her friends and family. Patricia J. Jimison was united in marriage to Lynn Hostetler on March 14, 1971 in Stafford, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Inman, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of two daughters, Deborah and Diane. She is survived by her children, Deborah Hostetler, of McPherson, and Diane Walters and her husband Darren, of Beloit; her brother, Conrad Jimison, of Overland Park. Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lynn Hostetler. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel in McPherson. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at North Inman Cemetery in Inman, Kansas with Rev. Tim Leaf officiating.

MILWAUKEE –&nbsp;Angelo Stuart has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Milwaukee men's basketball team, head coach&nbsp;Bart Lundy&nbsp;announced today. Stuart, a 6-foot, 1-inch, 185-pound shooting guard, comes to Milwaukee following an All-American campaign at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas. "Not only is Angelo an All-American guard, but he is one of the best students and most energetic individuals that I have recruited in 30 years of coaching," Lundy said. "I am so excited to have the opportunity to have him in the program and he is going to be a fan favorite from day one. Not only will he be a great player for us, but he will be one of the best ambassadors for our program we will ever have." Stuart was named a National Junior College Athletic Association Third Team All-American after leading the Blue Dragons to a 26-9 record, a second-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference, a Region VI Tournament runner-up finish, while also advancing to the second round of the 2022 NJCAA Tournament. Stuart led the Jayhawk Conference in scoring in 2021-22 and finished 12th in the NJCAA in scoring at 22.2 points per game. His 689 total points scored were the most for the program since 2018 (and 13th-most in school history). He established a new Blue Dragon single-season record for three-pointers made with 104 this season, connecting on 40.5 percent (104-of-257) of his attempts from deep. He put together three different outings in which he hit at least six 3's, scoring in double-figures 31 times while topping 30 on three different occasions. Stuart scored a season-high 34 points twice, both times coming against Dodge City. He also had a 30-point game against Connors State in the NJCAA Tournament. In addition to his All-America honors, Stuart was named First-Team All-Jayhawk Conference/Region VI. Besides the scoring average of 22.2 ppg, he also recorded per-game averages of 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 32 games, shooting nearly 80 percent (.780) from the free-throw line. Stuart spent the 2020-21 campaign at Seattle, playing in 17 games. That followed a very successful true freshman season at Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri. While there, he led the Cardinals to a 30-2 record, the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference Championship, and the No. 1 seed in the Region 16 Tournament. In 32 games played, he led MAC in scoring at 17.8 ppg while shooting nearly 55 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 80.4 percent from the charity stripe, adding 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Schrock had a huge day on Saturday at the Butler Invitational. Her day included two national championship qualifications and three personal records.

Schrock, a native of Hutchinson, started her day with a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw with a national-qualifying and personal-record throw of 142-feet, 1 inches. That throw ranks No. 11 in Blue Dragon history.

The Blue Dragon sophomore then qualified for nationals in the discus with a second-place effort in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 9 inches.

Schrock finished off her huge day with a second-place finish in the shot put with a national-qualifying and career-best mark of 36 feet, 3 inches.

Schrock is the first Blue Dragon women’s athlete and the third overall Blue Dragon athlete to earn KJCCC Weekly track and field honors. Men’s thrower Antonio Cooper has twice won the men’s Field Athlete of the Week award this season, once indoor and once outdoor.

Schrock and the Blue Dragons begin competition in the Region VI Outdoor Championships beginning Friday at Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City.

Howard “Warren” Boman, 79, of Hutchinson, died May 1. 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born November 17, 1942, in Great Bend to Ross and Hildegarde (Gales) Boman.

Warren graduated from Garfield High School in 1961 and later from St. Mary of the Plains College. He was the office manager for the Clark County FSA. Warren loved to garden, fish, and hunt. He was the president of the Hutchinson Community Garden for 20 years. Warren was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

On May 6, 1967, he married Annie Fairchild. They shared 57 years together.

Warren is survived by: wife, Ann Boman, Hutchinson; son, Ryan Boman (Dawn), Kansas City; grandson, Ross Boman, Hutchinson; and granddaughter, Kyria Ann Boman, Manhattan.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; siblings, Dorothy Lutz, Richard Boman, Don Boman, and Leonard Boman.

Rosary will be 10 am Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, with Father Matt Glazier officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday with the family present at Elliott Mortuary.

GLENVILLE, WV—The 2022 DII NCAA Women's Basketball National Champion has received a letter of intent from Hutchinson Community College shooting guard Tor'e Alford. Alford, a Derby graduate, averaged 12.5 points per game in her three-season career with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons.Asked what played into here choosing Glenville State, "I really like that (the program winning its first national championship), and the coaching staff was really nice," Alford said. "I think my third year at Hutch really helped me academically, plus I was able to work on my game more."Alford was a second-team all-Jayhawk conference selection.&nbsp;Glenville State University went 35-1 last season and won the DII National Championship 85-72 over Washington State. The Pioneers play in the Mountain East Conference.Glenville State was renamed Glenville State University in February of this year by the West Virginia State Legislature.
