Park plan revealed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, in the CCS commons, Central Christian School will share the school's Year in Review. They will give a recap of the school year, celebrate how the Lord has provided, where they were, where they are at, and where they are going. 

There will be updates regarding enrollment, finances, fundraising initiatives, the Child Care/Preschool campaign, and much more. If you have a question you would like to have answered during this time, please submit it to the office by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.

Central Christian School to hold Year in Review meeting Saturday

The appearance of stripe rust adds insult to injury to this year’s wheat crop, but Kansas growers should scout fields and have their management strategy ready for this yield- and quality-limiting disease. “Since the eUpdate&nbsp;was published&nbsp;on May 2, the risk of severe disease has elevated in north-central and northwest Kansas,” said Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology.&nbsp;“We are&nbsp;keeping a close eye on&nbsp;this part of the state.”&nbsp;

Stripe rust develops in cool, humid weather with rapid disease development between 50 and 60 degrees. The disease slows when nighttime temperatures are above 68 degrees&nbsp;or&nbsp;daytime temperatures&nbsp;have highs above&nbsp;80 degrees for several days.&nbsp;

Stripe rust shows as yellow or orange blister-like lesions arranged in stripes on the plant’s leaves. Timing is&nbsp;important&nbsp;as stripe rust has the highest impact on yield and quality when the crop is still in the flowering or early kernel-filling stages of development. Stripe rust on the upper leaves or flag leaf are of particular concern.&nbsp;

In south and south-central Kansas, the wheat crop has progressed past the optimal window for a fungicide application. According to K-State, the risk of yield loss from stripe rust decreases when the disease is spotted in fields already in the dough stages of grain development.&nbsp;In northwest and north-central Kansas,&nbsp;however, the crop is further behind and more vulnerable.&nbsp;

In addition to limiting yield, Onofre noted that K-State research has seen a three to nine percent decrease in test weight in susceptible varieties under high stripe rust disease pressure, varying between wheat varieties and environments. This impact is&nbsp;important&nbsp;for end-use quality as test weight provides an initial&nbsp;indicator of quality&nbsp;and works as a rough estimate of potential flour yield.&nbsp;

While detrimental to yield and quality, producers can effectively treat stripe rust with foliar fungicides,&nbsp;particularly&nbsp;if applied at earlier growth stages. According to the eUpdate, “K-State research demonstrates that if stripe rust&nbsp;is detected&nbsp;on flag leaves at the heading growth stage, there is a 90% chance your fungicide application will pay off.&nbsp;This&nbsp;is a year when scouting will be critical.”&nbsp;

Producers should also pay close attention to labels and information on the pre-harvest intervals for their preferred fungicides. 3.&nbsp;Does the field’s yield potential justify a fungicide application?&nbsp;A fungicide can provide a 10 to 15 percent yield boost under moderate to high stripe rust pressure.&nbsp;But, if the disease is&nbsp;not present&nbsp;or the crop is in poor&nbsp;to&nbsp;very poor&nbsp;condition, a fungicide application may not pay off.&nbsp;

4.&nbsp;How much moisture has the field received recently?&nbsp;The eUpdate noted stripe rust shows up in fields about&nbsp;10&nbsp;days from&nbsp;when the infection first occurs, so producers should continue scouting fields, especially if they have received rainfall.&nbsp;

5.&nbsp;What is the fusarium head scab risk?&nbsp;If a field has a history of head scab and the current year’s crop is approaching flowering, producers may be able to control both stripe rust and head scab with a single application this year.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann talked to Hutch Post Wednesday afternoon after he spoke Wednesday morning about the Farm Bill on the House Floor again and he really does see movement now.

"It's been very frustrating," Mann said. "I went to the floor for the 27th time, calling on Congress to pass a five-year Farm Bill. It's been delayed. It's been very frustrating, but, what's going to happen is, on the House side, the text has been drafted, it's going to be released here in the next few days. Later this month, we'll have a markup at committee, which means that committee will go through it, we'll consider it, we'll vote on it, vote on the amendments that come up and then pass it on to the House floor. It looks like we're finally starting to make some progress on the Farm Bill."

If current schedules hold, that markup is scheduled for May 23.

"It's important that we get a fiscally responsible Farm Bill," Mann said. "Within that, top priorities for me are crop insurance, trade and research, as well as oversight. Specifically, on crop insurance, and we've talked about this over the last few months, crop insurance is such an important risk management tool for our ag producers and a very successful public private partnership. There will be efforts to weaken, diminish, chip away at crop insurance. I think we need to be strengthening it, fortifying it and making it better. That will be a big priority, also, on trade, when you talk about a fiscally responsible Farm Bill, if you look at the dollars, as a nation, that we spend, in promoting trade and opening up other markets overseas, it's an incredibly high return on that investment. That warrants further investment to make sure that we have robust international markets for ag products, those are going to be big focuses for me at the markup here in a couple weeks."

The extension of the current Farm Bill expires Sept. 30.

Mann: Farm Bill markup 'in a couple weeks'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There have been a series of accidents in recent weeks at the intersection of 43rd and Halstead, so city staff had consulting engineers from JEO take a look at what could be done until the city council decides whether or not to go through with a full-blown traffic study.

"What they are recommending is we do install Stop Ahead signs on 43rd Street as they are approaching the Halstead intersection," said Interim Assistant City Manager Gary Meagher. "We also need to look at putting reflective tape on the stop signs to just catch the person's eyes a little bit more. There's some placards we can put on the stop signs that will let people know that the cross traffic does not stop. Also, continuing to monitor the intersection, working with property owners to make sure that they are keeping the intersections clear for sight distance."

There was a consensus of the council members present to go ahead with those steps right now.

City to help with 43rd and Halstead

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On January 8, 2024, House Bill 2481 was introduced that would designate K-96 at Haven the PFC Henry Lee Fisher Memorial Highway after a local soldier who was KIA in Vietnam.

The bill quickly passed both the Kansas House and Senate with unanimous support and on April 18, 2024 was signed into law by Governor Laura Kelly.

The family is now responsible for the over $12,000 cost of the two memorial signs.

A fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, May 9 at Baker Ballroom at 17 East 2nd in Hutchinson from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. 100% of the proceeds go to pay for these memorial highway signs.

Jake Feil told Hutch Post the story of his uncle.

"My Uncle Henry grew up in Haven," Feil said. He was the third oldest of four. My mom's the youngest. They lived their entire lives in Haven. My grandparents lived their entire lives in Haven. My grandpa was a World War II vet, so it was only fitting that his two oldest boys kind of followed in his footsteps.

"They grew up in Haven. My uncle graduated Haven High School in 1965. Shortly after high school, he joined the Army, or attempted to. He was actually denied his first attempt at joining the Army because during his routine physical, they found a hernia. At that point, he could have probably walked away, avoided Vietnam altogether, but he had a strong desire to serve his country. So he came home, he had the surgery to repair the hernia, and he went right back.

"He did his boot camp in Missouri. He was assigned to the 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, and he was sent to the front lines of Vietnam. He was killed in action in 1967."

The family has already raised about $7900, so hopefully this event can get them the rest of the way.

The event will feature live music from local singer/songwriter Morgan Wilk, a catered taco bar, a cash bar, and a huge silent auction. We will also have a very special guest to perform the “Star-Spangled Banner”.

Some of the silent auction items include: A ride in a Cessna UC-78 WWII-era plane, several Mother’s Day gift baskets, a Midway Motors gift basket that includes an oil change and full car detail, Abilene Smoky Valley Train Ride for four, a three piece outdoor patio furniture set from Bold Corporate, a weekend golf outing at Firekeeper Course in Topeka, plus a lot more.

Fundraiser for highway signs Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council agreed on Tuesday to sign the application for a grant for the 2024 Transportation Alternatives program.

The Downtown Hutchinson Pedestrian Safety and Access Improvements project was deemed eligible for the program, now a full grant application will be submitted by May 17, 2024. This federal grant would fund 80% of the participating costs.

KDOT has informed the City that federal HSIP funding will be applied to the project to cover the required 20% local match. The City would be responsible for any costs deemed by KDOT to be non-participating costs and any costs that exceed the grant award.&nbsp;

"The project would make sidewalk, curb, pedestrian ramp and crosswalk repairs that were identified in the city's recently completed Downtown Hutch Master Plan," said Jim Weber, consulting engineer with JEO. "There are 69 sites identified in a 27 block core area that need significant repairs."

This project has an estimated cost of $1,056,000 that includes construction, inspection, and design costs. The grant would provide 80% of the participating cost in the amount of $844,800. Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds in the amount of $211,200 would be applied by KDOT to the project to cover the City 20% match. 

"This resolution has three primary components," Weber said. "It indicates that the governing body is aware of the project and supports the application, it indicates the city is willing to pay for its share of the project, which in this case is zero, and it authorizes Brian Clennan, your Public Works Director, to submit the application and any other required information as they might ask for it. I would note that these are federal funds, and the city would need to follow any federal procurement procedures along the way."

The Hutchinson City Council approved the application with all three present members voting in favor.

ADA, sidewalk and crosswalk improvements grant submission approved

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The BrightHouse Parenting Time Center offers supervised visits and monitored exchanges in a safe neutral environment for families in Reno and surrounding counties. Two Hugoton, Kansas women were recently brutally murdered in a crime that may have been prevented with a safe supervised visit site. A 5th person has been arrested in the tragic murders of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley. It has been revealed that (1) the case stemmed from a bitter custody battle, (2) the mother, Veronica Butler, had off-site supervised visits and was traveling to exchange her children, and (3) Jilian Kelley was a court ordered supervisor for the family. These revelations underscore the significance of supervised visitation and monitored exchange services in ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families in contentious custody situations.

There are no centers like the Parenting Time Center in Stevens County or the Panhandle of Oklahoma. This lack of local resources highlights the challenges faced by families in accessing supervised visitation services in those areas. The nearest provider for supervised visits/monitored exchanges for Hugoton is 105 miles away in Colorado.

Using friends or relatives as supervisors often leads to a strain on relationships, difficulty maintaining neutrality, and may detract from the quality of parent-child interactions. Monitored exchanges at our Reno County center provide a safe, neutral environment, with measures such as keeping parties separate, enforcing staggered arrival times, conducting thorough intakes, and documenting behaviors. These exchanges occur in well-lit, secure facilities with established safety protocols and trained security personnel. Utilizing such facilities prevents children from witnessing emotionally charged conflicts common in unsupervised exchanges. Supervised visits and exchanges ensure children can maintain relationships with both parents without being caught in their conflicts. They offer reassurance to primary guardians about their children's safety and provide non-residential parents or relatives with uninterrupted contact.

The BrightHouse Parenting Time Center does not require a court order to use our services. If both parties agree either supervised visits or exchange services can be used voluntarily for any length of time. To get services started an intake is completed separately with each party to discuss family dynamics, services, and policies of the Parenting Time Center. Once completed, services may begin and last however long agreed upon. The Parenting Time Center can be a solution during short term concerns or long term depending on the needs of each family.

Two Hugoton, Kansas women were recently brutally murdered in a crime that may have been prevented with a safe supervised visit site. A 5th person has been arrested in the tragic murders of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley. It has been revealed that (1) the case stemmed from a bitter custody battle, (2) the mother, Veronica Butler, had off-site supervised visits and was traveling to exchange her children, and (3) Jilian Kelley was a court ordered supervisor for the family. These revelations underscore the significance of supervised visitation and monitored exchange services in ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families in contentious custody situations.There are no centers like the Parenting Time Center in Stevens County or the Panhandle of Oklahoma. This lack of local resources highlights the challenges faced by families in accessing supervised visitation services in those areas. The nearest provider for supervised visits/monitored exchanges for Hugoton is 105 miles away in Colorado.Using friends or relatives as supervisors often leads to a strain on relationships, difficulty maintaining neutrality, and may detract from the quality of parent-child interactions. Monitored exchanges at our Reno County center provide a safe, neutral environment, with measures such as keeping parties separate, enforcing staggered arrival times, conducting thorough intakes, and documenting behaviors. These exchanges occur in well-lit, secure facilities with established safety protocols and trained security personnel. Utilizing such facilities prevents children from witnessing emotionally charged conflicts common in unsupervised exchanges. Supervised visits and exchanges ensure children can maintain relationships with both parents without being caught in their conflicts. They offer reassurance to primary guardians about their children's safety and provide non-residential parents or relatives with uninterrupted contact.The BrightHouse Parenting Time Center does not require a court order to use our services. If both parties agree either supervised visits or exchange services can be used voluntarily for any length of time. To get services started an intake is completed separately with each party to discuss family dynamics, services, and policies of the Parenting Time Center. Once completed, services may begin and last however long agreed upon. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Recently, StartUp Hutch facilitated a loan package to enable Carolyn’s Essenhaus to continue under new owners Francisco Villanueva and Karina D Carmon.&nbsp;

Francisco's entrepreneurial journey was catalyzed by the guidance of StartUp Hutch and his completion of the 12-week Entrepreneurship Business Basics (EBB) JUMP program. This intensive course equipped Francisco with vital knowledge and skills essential for launching his business endeavor. Furthermore, the program facilitated invaluable networking opportunities, connecting Francisco with Dave Sotelo, Director of Strategic Growth at the City of Hutchinson, who played a pivotal role in introducing him to StartUp Hutch.&nbsp;

“I feel so fortunate that Dave encouraged me to participate in the EBB program. It helped my wife and I have the confidence to pursue our dream of owning our own business together,” said Francisco. “Those connections set us on the path to where we are today.”&nbsp;

Tailored for aspiring entrepreneurs like Francisco, the EBB JUMP program provided a comprehensive curriculum covering the fundamental aspects of business inception and managing a business. This program, and others like it, are made possible for Reno County residents by the partnership between StartUp Hutch and NetWork Kansas, the state-wide Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

HARVEY COUNTY — The Harvey County Department on Aging, Harvey County Interurban and the Asbury Park Foundation are partnering to provide complimentary transportation opportunities May 20-24 to Newton residents 60 and older.

May is Older Americans Month, and this transportation initiative was crafted to match the 2024 theme, Powered by Connection.

The program is focused on benefiting older adults in Newton who struggle with transportation. Utilizing Interurban vehicles, the program will allow residents to pursue various ventures of their choosing to encourage social connections, such as shopping on Main Street, meeting friends, making a hair appointment or visiting the Newton Senior Center. The offer is for non-medical trips only.

“Everyone benefits from community connections and reducing isolation,” said Department on Aging Director Lona Kelly. “We want to provide an option for adults 60 and older who may not have the resources or access to local transportation, and we’re hopeful this opportunity encourages them to enjoy their community and make powerful connections.”

Asbury Park Foundation is providing grant funds to offset costs.

To make a reservation, call the Interurban office at 316-284-6802. Reservations require 24-hour notice, and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Interurban vehicles are wheelchair and scooter accessible.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School baseball team finished the regular season strong on Tuesday night with a pair of wins over the Derby Panthers, 5-0 in game one, and 7-6 in game two.&nbsp;

The Salthawks end the regular season 17-9 overall, 8-4 in the AVCTL-I. The 17 wins are the most by a Salthawks team since the 2004 team finished 17-4.

Hutchinson received a dominant pitching start in game one, and then rallied from down 6-0 to win game two in walk-off fashion, 7-6.

The two wins over the Panthers are the first sweep of Derby by Hutchinson since the 2013 season.

Game 1: Hutchinson 5, Derby 0 Eastyn Keeler made his final start on the mound at Hobart-Detter Field one to remember. The senior left-handed pitcher tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout, striking out a season-high six in the win.

Both starting pitchers were cruising right along until the bottom of the fifth, when Derby starter Hudson Halstead, who had only allowed two baserunners through the first four frames, struggled in the fifth.

 Halstead walked three and hit a batter in the inning, but the biggest blow was a three-run inside-the-park home run hit by Carter Morgan into the right field corner. The Salthawks scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning.

The Salthawks scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth on five hits, including a double by Beavers, singles by Bleything, Parks and Yoder, and the tying single from JuJu Lyons.

⚾ Salthawks rally to complete sweep of Derby

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — About 80 Reno County high school students participated in Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy's (HC&amp;TEA) fourth annual signing day ceremony Tuesday morning. The ceremony is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field after high school.&nbsp;

"Every year it just gets a little bit more exciting&nbsp; to see  just the smiles on the young peoples faces but also looking out there at the crowd at their parents and their educators who are excited to support them in their future careers," Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel said. "That's really why we do it, to really celebrate those kids for the good decisions that they are making that we know will pay off. We know it's going to lead to a career and we hope that career is right here in our community."&nbsp;

Each student signed a commerative letter of intent and put on a Hutchinson Community College hat for the ceremony. Some of the trades students announced their intent to pursue include Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Welding Technology and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).&nbsp;

Teufel said each student who is concurrent with an HC&amp;TEA program is earning credit with HCC as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"By the time they graduate high school they may have a&nbsp; certificate or a credential in one of the technical fields, but at the same time have earned some Hutch Community College credit along the way and then they can choose to either take that credit and continue to get their associates in one of those fields or they can choose to go right into the workplace," said Teufel.&nbsp;

After the ceremony, an employer fair that featured nine local employers took place. Teufel said if there are students out there that didn't get to participate in signing day but are interested in any of the career fields featured at the fair, to contact the Chamber.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"Our Greater Hutch economic development office is located at the chamber and we want to make sure that kids are getting into those internships with local companies," Teufel said. "There's also a career advisor at Hutch Community College as well as your school counselors that can advise you on careers.  </figure>EMMIE BOESE&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — About 80 Reno County high school students participated in Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy's (HC&amp;TEA) fourth annual signing day ceremony Tuesday morning. The ceremony is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field after high school.&nbsp;"Every year it just gets a little bit more exciting&nbsp; to see just the smiles on the young peoples faces but also looking out there at the crowd at their parents and their educators who are excited to support them in their future careers," Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel said. "That's really why we do it, to really celebrate those kids for the good decisions that they are making that we know will pay off. We know it's going to lead to a career and we hope that career is right here in our community."&nbsp;Each student signed a commerative letter of intent and put on a Hutchinson Community College hat for the ceremony. Some of the trades students announced their intent to pursue include Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Welding Technology and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).&nbsp;Teufel said each student who is concurrent with an HC&amp;TEA program is earning credit with HCC as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;"By the time they graduate high school they may have a&nbsp; certificate or a credential in one of the technical fields, but at the same time have earned some Hutch Community College credit along the way and then they can choose to either take that credit and continue to get their associates in one of those fields or they can choose to go right into the workplace," said Teufel.&nbsp;After the ceremony, an employer fair that featured nine local employers took place. Teufel said if there are students out there that didn't get to participate in signing day but are interested in any of the career fields featured at the fair, to contact the Chamber.&nbsp;&nbsp;"Our Greater Hutch economic development office is located at the chamber and we want to make sure that kids are getting into those internships with local companies," Teufel said. "There's also a career advisor at Hutch Community College as well as your school counselors that can advise you on careers. Health Department Advisory Board needs member

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— A proclamation was read at Tuesday's Hutchinson City Council meeting for Public Works Week.

"We're excited to have an area set up at this month's Third Thursday downtown," said Jamie Althouse with Public Works. "Public Works will have a section at Third Thursday kind of just to bring awareness of what Public Works is what we do for the community and the amazing people that work for us. We'll have a variety of different things there. We'll have a traffic light set up with one of our signal technicians that will kind of, you know, explain how traffic lights work and just the mechanics behind it. We'll also have our sewer inspection van there. Kids can see the robotic camera that we use to inspect our sewer system. We'll also have a couple mini excavators and some of our talented operators doing some pretty neat things.&nbsp; They'll be playing tic-tac-toe with each other with the excavators and playing Jenga, stuff like that, just kind of fun stuff to highlight our equipment operators and the amazing work they do, but in a fun way. We'll also have a free popcorn and bottled water and coloring books for kids."

The 64th annual Public Works Week is May 25-29.

NICKERSON, Kan.&nbsp;— There's a magic bus in Reno County but it's not called the Magic School Bus with a red haired Ms. Frizzle behind the wheel. This bus is called the Magic Clothes Bus. Melissa Kuhns, a bus driver for Nickerson USD 309, started the nonprofit with her family in 2020. The bus travels to numerous public events and helps those in need.&nbsp;

"It's like at each of these events, there's always a story that pops out in my head that really just makes me want to continue to help," Kuhns said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

More specifically, <a href="https://themagicclothesbus.com/">the Magic Clothes Bus</a>&nbsp;is a retired school bus that is filled with gently used clothing items. The items are prioritized for children and teens but clothes can be provided for adults. Clothing sizes range from 2T to adult 3XL. The bus also contains travel size toiletries and limited space for gently used kids sports attire. All items are free.&nbsp;

Kuhns idea for the bus started with a simple question she asked a middle school boy on her morning bus route. How was your Christmas break? He responded with I liked the clothes I got because I don't have anything that fits.&nbsp;

"Coming from a middle schooler that really... it hit my momma heart," Kuhns said.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Later that day, she went to one of the elementary schools in Nickerson and learned of another child in need of clothes. He ended up being the brother of the same kid Kuhns interacted with on the bus that morning.&nbsp;Kuhns said she took over some of her son's clothes that night.

&nbsp;"That really sparked the gears to,okay, what can I do as a bus driver," Kuhns said. "I see different things. You know I see kids who have too small of clothes. Too big of clothes. They just grow super fast. You know, how can I help?"&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kuhns said she thought about hosting a yard sale to take in donations but those that responded to her idea said that it would feel more like a handout. She said a trailer wouldn't work because she can't back it up well, so then the idea for the Magic Clothes Bus clicked.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Kuhns and her husband bought a bus in 2020 but their plans for the magic clothes bus were at a stand still when the COVID-19 pandemic hit two weeks later.&nbsp; Kuhns, her husband and father in-law used down time during the pandemic to renovate the bus. Seats were ripped out, peel and stick tiles were added and hangers were fabricated. 

Then the donations started to come. Kuhns said she received so many donations for the bus that it started to take over her family's home.&nbsp;

"I was buying tubs like crazy," Kuhns said. "I was washing clothes like crazy. It was insane."&nbsp;

Kuhns said after the pandemic she and her family could start to take the bus out to public events. Kuhns said after the launch of the Magic Clothes Bus, she had some Nickerson High School students on her activity bus talk about how expensive formal wear is for prom.&nbsp;

I was like, hold on," Kuhns said. "Hold on. I've got a lot of dresses in my closet that I don't wear anymore so let's do something with that."

Kuhns now hosts a prom and formal wear edition of the Magic Clothes Bus each year. She said her favorite story about the prom edition was the first year it was held.&nbsp;A woman stepped into the bus to look for a dress because she was getting ready to receive her GED and wanted to attend an adult prom.&nbsp;

"Thirty minutes before she had came in, I had a lady bring a mother of the bride dress and it fit her perfect," Kuhns said. "It was like it was made for her. Her face lit up and she just paraded around everywhere and was just like look at my dress. It was so exciting. It was great to see."&nbsp;

The Magic Clothes Bus will be at United Way of Reno County's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/777781090971266">UNITED.READ.CONNECT event</a> at Gowan's Stadium on Sunday, May 19.&nbsp;
