🏀 GBB: Salthawks bounce back, will play for 5th Saturday

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk girls bounced back after their loss to Derby in the first round of the Emporia Glacier's Edge Invitational in fine fashion to defeat Wichita Southeast 49-34 on Friday.

Hutchinson (6-4) now andvances to the consolation championship game to play for 5th place in the 50th Glacier's Edge Tourney versus Shawnee Heights on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Emporia.

The Salthawks jumped out on the Golden Buffaloes quickly with a 10-0 run to lead 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. Southeast was not able to score until the 4:46 mark of the first quarter.

Hutch used a switching defense alternating between a zone and man-to-man that held the Buffs to only one field goal and a free-throw in the second quarter.

The Salthawks were up 21-7 at halftime.

The second have was more of the same as Hutchinson to 41-20 with 10 points being scored by Salthawk senior Azariah Dawes. Rachel Tomac came off the bench to completely own the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with her nine point mostly on offensive putbacks.

Hutchinson was led by Dawes 16 points followed by Grace Posch, Tomac, and Kaia Smith each with nine. Kolbie Craft added four and Ava Krone came off the bench to score two.

Wichita Southeast (4-8) suffered their sixth loss in a row, but will play for 7th against Lawrence Free State on Saturday.

Emporia will face Blue Valley in the Championship, Derby will play versus Highland Park in the 3rd place game on Saturday afternoon.
