Dragons go 1-1 against pair of Texas foes in West Plains

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday in a Texas two-step of sorts of the final day of the Grizzly Invitational at the West Plains Civic Center.

Hutchinson’s day started off with No. 12 Tyler Junior College sweeping the Blue Dragons 25-21, 25-10, 25-19, but came back strong in the final match of the day with a sweep of Trinity Valley, 25-12, 26-24, 25-21.

The Blue Dragons are now 16-12 overall. Hutchinson will play host to the Colby Trojans at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Hutchinson-Trinity Valley match was the third meeting of the season between the Blue Dragons and Cardinals with each team owning one victory. Thanks to a balanced offensive attack and another superb defensive performance, the Blue Dragons were able to win the third meeting of the season.

Freshman Sophie Connor snapped out of a recent offensive slump to lead the Blue Dragons against Trinity Valley with 12 kills. Connor posted her first double-double of the season with 11 digs.

Sophomore Kristina Head finished with 11 kills, five total blocks, including one solo stuff. Freshman Blondie Penaflor added seven kills.

Freshman setter McKinley Johnson had 21 assists and freshman Andrea Serrano added 17 assists.

Sophomore libero Shelby Reeder finished with 18 digs. Morgan Harvey had 12 digs and three total blocks.

The Blue Dragons for a good portion of the first and third sets against Trinity Valley, but had to rally from six points down to win the second set 26-24.

Against No. 12 Tyler, Penaflor led the Blue Dragons with nine kills. Head and Harvey had five kills each. Serrano had 19 assists and Johnson added six.

Head led the Blue Dragons with nine digs. Reeder added seven. Head and Harvey had two block assists each. Reeder and Connor each had a service ace.
