
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Maize South Maverick basketball teams came to the SAC on Tuesday night expecting to get two easy wins over the Salthawk girls and boys, but easy it was not. Both games were highly competitive. The Salthawks girls lost a close one 38-35, while the Maverick boys won 60-48 to stay unbeaten on the season.
Girls Recap:
This one came down to the very last possesion as neither team had more than a three-point lead at any given time. Maize South led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Hutch had the lead at the half 17-16.
The third quarter had been the big quarter for Hutchinson all season, but not Tuesday, as the Salthawks were held to just eight points with Maize South leading 27-25 going into the final quarter. That is when Maize South sophomore Aliyah Singhateh took over scoring six of her 16 points to edge the Salthawks 38-35.
Hutchinson (10-7) was led by Grace Posch with 13 points. Lily Rodriquez, Azariah Dawes and Rachel Tomac each had six points and Kohlbie Craft had four.
Maize South (16-1) was led by Singhatehs 16, Skylar Seals had 10 points followed by Bella Peters six, Ava Howie, Kaylee Brunton and Ashley Singhateh each with two.
Boys Recap:
This game came down to Maize South taking advantage of the Salthawks size and the Mavericks ability to get offensive rebounds to pull away in the final quarter for a 60-48 win.
The Mavericks, led by senior guard Michael Kates four three-point baskets in the first have built a six-point 30-24 lead then promply outscored the Salthawks in the third quarter 17-8. Hutch was able to battle back late with Terrell King scoring 11 of his 15 points in the final half.
Jay Lewis came off the bench to spark the Salthawks with 13 of his game-high 17 points in the first half. Julian Smith and Tai Clark each scored five. Jax Heneha was held to just two free throws, as was Deven Spiller.
Michael Kates and Sam Kemp led Maize South with 18 points each, Sammy Dresie scored 11 and Tory Holman had nine. Jeron Askren was held to two free throws and Brady Rapp and Cy Stucky each scored a point.
The final home game of the season comes up on Friday when Hutchinson hosts Campus. Maize South (17-0) travels to Derby on Friday. Maize South is the No. 1 ranked team in class 5A this season.
Hutchinson slipped to No. 5 in the class 5A rankings as Great Bend passed the Salthawks and are 13-5 with their win Tuesday over Liberal.
Campus comes into the SAC with an 11-6 record, currently ranked No. 4 in class 6A.
