HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will await information from an expert on conversion therapy and its consequences, after comments from council member Jade Piros de Carvalho on Tuesday.

"Conversion therapy is an attempt to change sexual orientation," Piros de Carvalho said. "It's usually targeted at youths. Communities in Kansas are banning the practice in minors. I was wondering if the city council might consider adopting a similar ordinance as adopted in Roeland Park and Lawrence."

Mayor Steve Garza asked for more information on the topic when Piros de Carvalho suggested bringing in an expert.

"I think that would be great," Garza said. "I really don't understand it, so I would like for you to do that."

When Lawrence passed their ordinance, commissioners there said research has shown the practice is harmful to children’s mental health and increases the risk of suicide. No timeline was given as for when the expert might be available or who might be asked.
