Police: Stolen handgun used in killing of 2-year-old Kansas boy

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the fatal shooting of 2-year-old have arrested 21-year-old Bishop Isaiah Mendoza of Lawrence.

Just before 11a.m. Sept. 17, police were dispatched to a home in the 1500 Block of Wedgewood Drive in Lawrence in reference to a shooting, according to police spokesperson Patrick Compton. 

Officers arrived on scene and located a 2-year-old child later identified as Legend King who was critically injured from an apparent gunshot wound. The child was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical. The child was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Mendoza is being held on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated child endangerment and possession of a stolen handgun, according to Compton.

Officers and detectives are currently speaking with the parties involved in the incident and preliminary information suggests the shooting was accidental. Authorities released no additional details including names of those involved.
