MANHATTAN, Kan.—Kansas State (5-5, 1-1 Big 12) opens the new year with a return to Big 12 action, as the Wildcats play host to TCU (8-2, 1-1 Big 12) at 1 p.m., CT at Bramlage Coliseum. K-State, winners of 4 of its last 5 games, went 1-1 in its 2 December Big 12 games, opening with a 74-65 win at Iowa State on Dec. 15 before losing at home to No. 2/2 Baylor, 100-69, on Dec. 19. Saturday’s game will air on ESPNU with Rich Hollenberg (play-by-play) and Lance Blanks (analyst) on the call. KHMY My93.1 will broadcast the game locally.

OPENING TIP

  1. TCU swept the regular season series for the first time in 2019-20, which included a dramatic 59-57 victory by the Horned Frogs in the last matchup in Manhattan on a tip-in by Kevin Samuel with 2 seconds on January 7, 2020. K-State did win the third meeting in the first round of the Big 12 Championship, 53-49, on March 11 in what is believed to be the last completed game before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the rest of the conference tournament and NCAA Tournament schedule.
  2. K-State is coming off a dramatic win in its last outing, as freshman Selton Miguel hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 9.7 seconds to help lift the Wildcats past Omaha, 60-58, on Tuesday night. The teams battled through 6 lead changes and 4 ties in the last 11 minutes, as neither team led by more than 2 points in the last 8:33.
  3. The win evened K-State’s record to 5-5 -- the first time the team has been at .500 since falling to 7-7 after a loss to TCU at home on Jan. 7, 2020 -- while it was the Wildcats’ fourth win in its last 5 outings.
  4. Miguel (11 points) and senior Mike McGuirl (13) each talled double-figure points, while freshman Davion Bradford and sophomore DaJuan Gordon each grabbed 10 rebounds to become the first Wildcat duo to post double-digit boards in the same game since 2014. Gordon enjoyed a solid all-around game with 6 points, a career-best 5 assists and a game-high 3 steals, while McGuirl added a game-high 6 assists to give him 27 in the last 5 games (5.4 per game).
  5. The Omaha game was notable in that only 2 Wildcats (McGuirl and Gordon) of the 8 that played were on the team a year ago, which included 4 true freshmen (Davion Bradford, Seryee Lewis, Selton Miguel and Nijel Pack). K-State has started 3 true freshmen (Bradford, Miguel and Pack) in 5 consecutive games, which includes both Big 12 games. The Wildcats are one of 4 teams (Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina) to start at least 3 true freshmen in at least one game, while the 21 combined starts by true freshmen rank second only to Kentucky’s 25. The next closest schools are North Carolina (19), Auburn (15), Montana (15) and Tennessee Tech (15).
  6. Since switching to the 4-guard lineup against Milwaukee on Dec. 11, K-State is averaging 69.8 points on 45.8 percent shooting (130-of-284), including 58.7 percent (91-of-155) from inside the 3-point line. Seven different Wildcats (Miguel, Pack, McGuirl, Bradford, Gordon, Rudi Williams and Antonio Gordon) are averaging better than 7.5 points in the 5-game span, including a team-best 11.4 points per game by Miguel, while 3 others (Pack (9.8 ppg.), McGuirl (9.6) and Bradford (9.0) are averaging better than 9 points per game and Gordon is averaging a near double-double with 8.8 points and a team-best 7.8 rebounds. In all, underclassmen have combined for 259 of the team’s 349 points on 49 percent (98-of-200) shooting in the last 5 games.

  5. Like K-State, TCU was picked low in the Big 12 preseason poll, as the Horned Frogs were picked ninth with 18 points, just ahead of the Wildcats.
  6. TCU is led by fourth-year head coach Jamie Dixon, who has posted an 92-59 (.609) record, which includes an NCAA Tournament trip in 2018 and bids to the NIT in both 2017 and 2019. He is 420-182 (.698) in his 18th season as a head coach, which includes a stint at Pittsburgh (2003-16).
