Majority of U.S. adults are against college athletes joining unions, according to AP-NORC survey
More than half of Americans say they are against college athletes unionizing, though younger respondents were more supportive than older, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The survey found that 55% of adults believe NCAA athletes should not be permitted to form unions that would led to collective bargaining with schools. The survey found breaks in support along three lines: political party identification, race and age. Six in 10 adults under the age of 45 support allowing college athletes to form unions. Last week, Dartmouth men's basketball players voted to join a union.
NFL is reviewing whether Eagles and Falcons violated tampering policies
The NFL is reviewing whether the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles violated tampering policies during the legal tampering window, a league spokesman said Thursday. The Falcons agreed to a contract with four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins shortly after teams were permitted to start negotiating with unrestricted free agents on Monday. The Eagles quickly struck a deal with two-time Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley soon after the negotiation period opened at 12 p.m. EDT. Teams are permitted to talk directly with agents during the 52-hour negotiating window, but can't speak to the player unless he has no agent and represents himself.
Baseball superstar Ohtani and his wife arrive in South Korea for Dodgers-Padres MLB opener
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Shohei Ohtani and his wife have arrived in South Korea with his Los Angeles Dodgers teammates ahead of their season-opening Major League Baseball games against the San Diego Padres next week. Ohtani was the first Dodgers player who showed up at the arrival gate of Incheon international airport west of Seoul. His wife Mamiko Tanaka walked behind him. Before departing for South Korea, Ohtani revealed the identify of his wife by posting a photo of him and Tanaka, an ex-professional basketball player, on his Instagram account.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen being traded from Chargers to Bears for a fourth-round pick
The Chicago Bears acquired wide receiver Keenan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers for a fourth-round pick. Allen has spent his entire 11-year career with the Chargers and was the longest-tenured player on the roster. Allen is going into the final season of a four-year extension he signed in 2020, but refused to take a pay cut or restructure his contract according to one person familiar with the trade. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because they aren't at liberty to publicly discuss personnel moves. Allen's salary cap number for the upcoming season is $34.7 million, including a $5 million roster bonus due on Sunday.
Stanford fires men's basketball coach Jerod Haase after 8 seasons
Stanford has fired men's basketball coach Jerod Haase after he finished his eighth season at the school without a single NCAA Tournament appearance. Athletic director Bernard Muir announced the decision on Thursday night, shortly after the Cardinal finished a second straight losing season with a 79-62 loss to No. 22 Washington State in the Pac-12 quarterfinals in Las Vegas. Stanford went 14-18 for the season and finished in a three-way tie for ninth place in the Pac-12 with an 8-12 mark in conference. Haase had a 126-127 record overall for Stanford.
Rory McIlroy shoots a 65 with 2 tee shots in the water and 1 uncomfortable dispute
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Rory McIlroy had 10 birdies, two water balls and one lengthy dispute on where to take a penalty drop. It added up to a 65 at The Players Championship. That's his lowest start at the TPC Sawgrass and it gave him a share of the lead with Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark. One tee ball went into the water on the 18th. The one causing issues was on No. 7, his 16th hole of the round. Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland were questioning whether the ball landed above the red hazard line. McIlroy says he was comfortable with where he dropped.
Bees cause a buzz and lengthy disruption at Indian Wells tennis
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — A swarm of bees forced a nearly two-hour disruption to the quarterfinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open. The match was suspended 19 minutes in with Alcaraz serving tied at 1-1. Alcaraz eventually won 6-3, 6-1. Dozens of bees attached themselves to the overhead spider camera that traverses the court and a man without any protective covering used a vacuum to clean them off. Alcaraz swatted at the bees buzzing around him before running for cover. A worker without protective covering used a vacuum to clean the bees off an overhead camera and then sprayed the seating area and walls of the court.
No. 10 Marquette rebounds in OT after potential winner waved off, beats Villanova 71-65 in Big East
NEW YORK (AP) — Kam Jones scored 18 points, Oso Ighodaro's only basket was a huge one with 18 seconds left in overtime and No. 10 Marquette rebounded from having a potential game-winning buzzer-beater waved off in regulation to beat sixth-seeded Villanova 71-65 in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals. The third-seeded and defending champion Golden Eagles will face seventh-seeded Providence in the nightcap of Friday night's semifinal doubleheader at Madison Square Garden. Eric Dixon led Villanova with 19 points, TJ Bamba made three free throws with 1:50 left in the second half to tie it at 58 and neither team scored in regulation again.
Survive and advance? NC State tops No. 11 Duke 74-69; 10th-seeded Wolfpack headed to ACC semis
WASHINGTON (AP) — DJ Horne scored 18 points, including two clutch free throws with 15 seconds left, and North Carolina State ousted No. 11 Duke 74-69 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Kyle Filipowski had 28 points and 14 rebounds for second-seeded Duke, but N.C. State big man D.J. Burns Jr. kept him frustrated in the second half as the Wolfpack refused to yield. Tenth-seeded N.C. State will face either Virginia or Boston College in Friday's semifinals, needing two more victories to secure an improbable automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Providence boosts NCAA Tournament bid with 78-73 win over No. 8 Creighton in Big East quarterfinal
NEW YORK (AP) — Devin Carter had 22 points and 11 rebounds as Providence secured a huge victory for its postseason resume, holding off No. 8 Creighton 78-73 in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals. Josh Oduro added 17 points and nine boards for the seventh-seeded Friars, who recovered in the final five-plus minutes after squandering a 13-point lead in the second half. They will face 10th-ranked and third-seeded Marquette in the second semifinal Friday night at Madison Square Garden. Jayden Pierre had 15 points and seven assists for Providence. Ryan Kalkbrenner had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the second-seeded Bluejays.
