Hutch outlasts Hattiesburg, MS 5-4 to advance in NBCWS

HUTCHINSON, Kan.- The Hutchinson, KS Monarchs stayed alive in the 2020 NBC World Series powered by Evergy with a 5-4 victory over the Hattiesburg, MS Black Sox on Thursday night at Hobart-Detter Field. 

The Monarchs combined for nine strikeouts, with Wichita State’s Liam Eddy coming up with five strikeouts in five innings pitched to earn the win. The Black Sox’s pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts, with Tre Hobbs leading the way with six strikeouts. 

Hutchinson had five separate hitters collect a hit to tally for five hits and Jaylyn Williams went 3-for-4 on offense to lead the Black Sox. 

Following a one-out double, Taylor Barber came up with an RBI single to give the Monarchs its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Monarchs followed that up with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning, but the Black Sox stayed alive by getting on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. The Black Sox used a three-run top of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one and got the tying run on first following an error in the ninth, but the Monarchs sealed the win with two consecutive outs. 

The Monarchs will face the Hays, KS Larks on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium in Wichita.
