HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new program aimed at preparing Kansas high school students for careers in science and technology has been launched through a partnership between the Cosmosphere International SciEd Center and Space Museum, Ad Astra Academies, and USD 313.
The Ad Astra STEAM Academy is a four-year elective course plan designed for students in grades 9 through 12. It combines full-time virtual instruction with weekly, in-person labs at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. Students will gain hands-on experience through engineering simulations, design challenges, and project-based learning that reflects real-world aerospace and STEAM-related scenarios.
Program features include access to Cosmosphere exhibits, restoration spaces, and expert educators, along with dual-credit opportunities through K-State Salina, Hutchinson Community College, and WSU Tech. Seniors will complete a capstone project presented at a culminating symposium.
Students receive one full elective credit each year and may continue through four levels of the academy, building on critical thinking, innovation, and career readiness. There are no prerequisites to enroll.
Interested students must apply through Ad Astra Virtual Academy and meet program requirements. Applications are now open, and space is limited.
