HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of the consent agenda at the Board of County Commissioners meeting Tuesday was a refurbishment deal for a piece of landfill equipment. Commissioner Ron Hirst explained why this was a good deal for taxpayers.
"In place of buying new equipment, when it reaches a certain hourly period, the landfill contracts with Caterpillar to do a complete rebuild, which allows another ten to fifteen thousand hours on that for half the cost of buying new," Hirst said. "That's about as efficient as you can get with regard to equipment and money, future money."
Commissioner Daniel Friesen was surprised that the amount of $432,702.12 was half of a replacement.
"That price looks new...what's a new one cost?", Friesen asked.
Hirst said a new scraper would be over $800,000. The item and the rest of the consent agenda was passed unanimously.
