DERBY, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs (13-4) took the lead late in the game in an 8-5 victory over Derby Twins on Tuesday night in Derby. The Monarchs trailed 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning when Taylor Barber homered on a 0-2 count, scoring three runs.
Jake Sharp got the win for Hutchinson. He lasted four innings, allowing three hits, no runs while striking out five and walking one. Caden Pogue threw two innings in relief. Pogue recorded the last six outs to earn the save for Hutchinson. Matthew Gatewood took the loss for Derby.
Austin Callahan homered in the eighth inning. Anthony Mackenzie, Dylan Nedved, and Barber all managed multiple hits for Hutchinson. Mackenzie went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Monarchs in hits. Hutchinson pounded out 13 hits in the win.
Same teams match up Wednesday night at Hobart-Detter field in Carey Park to wrap up the 4 game series. First pitch will be at 7 pm. The Monarchs will have an off day on Thursday before starting a 4 game series with the Great Bend Bat Cats. Two of those games will be played in Hutchinson, one in Great Bend and the final game of the series will be played at Wichita State University Eck Stadium on Tuesday, July 14th.
