🏀 NJCAA Tourney: Northwest Florida State defeats Cowley

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Just two Kansas teams remain in the tournament. The No. 8 Northwest Florida State Raiders beat the No. 9 Cowley College Tigers 85-70 on Monday night. 

Cowley was down 36-28 towards the end of the first half. Cowley made it a tie ball game (39-39) at halftime. 

Sophomore guard Tyrese Elliot led Northwest Florida in scoring with 19 points. Two from the Raiders roster recorded a double-double.  Sophomore guard/forward Tavion Banks scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Freshman Jamal Sumlin scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. 

Sophomore forward Corey Thomas led Cowley in scoring with 20 points. Sophomore forward Jeff Nwankwo scored 15. 

Northwest Florida gained momentum though in the second and finished with 56.1% from the field, 46.2% from the 3-point line and 83.3% from the free throw line. Cowley shot 32.9% from the field, 24.0% from the 3-point line and 59.3% from the free throw line. 

Northwest Florida State will play No. 1 Barton in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 27 at noon. Daren Dunn and Rob Dreher will have the game play-by-play tomorrow on Country 102.9 FM and KWBW 1450 AM/98.5 FM.
