HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council is holding a special meeting Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
On the agenda for that meeting is a proposal for a loan to be taken by the city from the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund administered by KDHE.
The purpose of the loan is to fund water line replacements in the city.
Right now, the city thinks that somewhere around 10 lines will need to be replaced to comply with the EPA's Lead and Copper Rule. However, they are applying for much more money than they think they need in case that estimate is low. The amount on the application is $5.6 million, but they only expect to use about $100,000, if their estimate of line numbers is correct.
This project will only replace existing lines, not put in any new ones.
As an additional measure, the Kansas Water Office has asked for the city to update its Water Conservation Plan. That is also on the agenda.
In addition, the bids for the Atrium Hotel demolition will be considered. The low bid is for $865,000 from Kansas Concrete LLC of Nickerson.
The bid includes asbestos removal, demolition and hauling away all contents, signage and demolition material. Also, the contractor will remove all concrete, footings and foundations within the structural limits, cut and cap all utilities and backfill the area to grade with fill dirt.
Asbestos abatement is scheduled to start within 45 days of bid acceptance, with demolition to be completed within 120 days of the completion of the asbestos abatement.
