
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High Salthawk basketball teams both earned big victories over the Campus Colts on Friday in front a a huge crowd at the Salthawk Activity Center.
The Salthawk girls bounced back from a tough loss to Maize South on Tuesday to defeat the winless Campus Colts 58-32 while the Hutch High boys had to fight and claw their way back into the game after trailing 33-24 at the half to win, 69-62.
Both wins kept the Salthawk hopes alive to host at least one home court game when sub-state playoffs start on Feb. 27.
GIRLS GAME RECAP:
Hutch High fell behind early to the Colts but a strong final four minute run had the Salthawks on top 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 33 -18 at the half.
The Salthawks had another strong third quarter with Kaia Smith scoring eight of her 15 points in the third perior.
Besides Smith's 15, Grace Posch had 15, Rechel Tomac added 11. Azariah Dawes seven, four each for Kolbie Craft and Ava Krone and Lily Rodriguez added two.
Campus was paced by Addison Wood with 10 points, Kenzie Lever came off the bench to score eight, Aliah Sanchez six and Madilyn Harris added five along with Emilyh Dedeau five.
Hutch High (11-7) travels to Derby (14-3) Tuesday while Campus visits Maize South.
BOYS GAME RECAP:
Hutch High rode the hot hand of Tai Clark's 15 points to place four Salthawks in double figures to rally after trailing at the half by nine points 33-24 to win over the Colts 69-62.
Hutch totally turned things around in the 3rd quarter with Clark scoring nine of his 15 in the quarter along with Terrell King adding five. King was saddled with two early game fouls and sat for much of the first half.
It tood a great defensive effort by the Salthawks in the second half to off set Campus start and Drake University commit Andrell Burton Jr. who put on one heck of a show scoring 33 points on the night. 19 in the second half alone, but Burton was all that Campus had in the third quarter when Hutch made their run to lead 50-47 going into the final period.
Hutch was paced with Clark's 15 followed by Jax Heneha, Terrell King and Devon Spiller all with 11 points each. Jay Lewis added nine, Taishaun Govain six, plus a huge offensive board and save late that allowed the Salthawks another possession after a missed free throw,. Julian Smith added four and Daylee VanSycle two.
Campus was led by Burton's 33, nine points each by Kaason Thomas and Landon Brown, Jacob Weber seven, Drake McPherson two and Hagin Warkins two rounded out the Campus scoring.
Hutch High, now 12-6 travel to Derby on Tuesday while Campus (11-7) visits Maize South.
Hutchinson closes out the regular season on the road at Derby and Newton in the upcoming week. sub-state assignments will be announced by KSHSAA on Feb. 24. The Salthawks are still hoping for a home court game on Feb. 27.
