HUTCHINSON, Kan.-It was a special home opener with both Hutch High Salthawk basketball teams picked up wins over the Goddard Lions with some home cooking at the Salthawk Activity Center on Friday night.

GIRLS RECAP:

The Salthawk girls took a page out of the boys playbook by using smothering defense in route to a 46-41 win over Goddard in the early game.

The Hutch High boys had to rally back after trailing to an undefeated Lions team in the second half to win 62-50 in the night cap.

The Salthawk girls looked like they were going to run away with their game leading by 11 points at one time in the second quarter only to see Goddard come back to make it a three point game at half time with Hutch on top 21-18.

The Lions used big baskets by senior guard Lauryn Gordon to cut the Salthawk lead to two at 34-32 going into the fourth quarter.

That is when the trio of Grace Posch, Kaia Smith and Kohlbie Craft took over for the Salthawks. Posch scored all of her nine points in the second half including four in the final quarter while Craft cleaned up on the offensive boards with three put-back baskets. Smith hit a huge trifecta in the final quarter to enable the Salthawks to pull away for the win.

Hutch High was led in scoring by senior Azariah Dawes and  junior Kaia Smith will 11 points each followed up by Craft's 10 point effort. Posch rounded out the Salthawk scoring with nine.

Gordon led the Lions with 12 points with 9 of her 12 coming in the 2nd half.

Hutch High goes to 3-1 on the season while Goddard falls to 2-2. Hutch high travels to Haysville next Tuesday to do battle with Campus to close out the December part of the schedule prior to Christmas.

That is when the Salthawk defense took over to hold Goddard to only eight third quarter points by shutting down Goddard's Jake Jasnoski in the paint and Nick Rogers from the perimeter.

The fourth quarter was even worse offensively for the Lions as they only generated six fourth quarter points.

Hutch High senior guard Jay Lewis knocked down two huge three point shots from the left corner and scored eight of his 11 points down the stretch.

Julian Smith led the Salthawks with 13 points followed by Lewis with 11. Jax Heneha had 9 along with 9 from Treyden Tecklenburg, 8 apiece for Tai Clark and Daylee VanSyckle added 8 while Taishaun Govain rounded out the scoring with 4.
