SPRINGDALE, Ark. — The Wind Surge tallied seven hits and allowed just one run to defeat Northwest Arkansas 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in Springdale. The win is their fourth in a row.
Michael Helman got things going for the Surge with a solo home run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Brandon Lawson started strong with 3 straight scoreless innings before giving up an RBI single to Natural’s Tucker Bradley to tie the game. Lawson finished the day with 3.2 innings pitched with 1 strikeout and only allowing 1 run before being relieved by Tyler Viza.
Chris Williams doubled in the top of the 5th, followed by a Kevin Merrell soft ground ball to the pitcher that was beat out to give the Surge a 2-1 lead. A throwing error by Naturals pitcher Asa Lacy allowed Austin Martin to score to extend the lead to 3-1.
Another soft dribbler to the pitcher from Kevin Merrell allowed him to beat out the throw to allow Chris Williams to score once again to extend the lead to 4-1in the top of the 7th inning. Matt Wallner hit a 411-foot solo home run in the top of the 8th to extend the lead to 5-1 in the top of the 8th.
The Wichita bullpen had another impressive outing pitching 5.1 innings and allowing zero runs and 8 strikeouts.
The Wind Surge will head back to Wichita to resume action for a six game homestand against division foe Midland RockHounds starting on Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
