WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State completed the series sweep of Memphis on Sunday with an 8-0 run-rule win in five innings, powered by Chloe Barber's no-hitter in the circle.
Wichita State (25-21, 16-11) clinched the No. 4 seed in next week's American Athletic Conference Championship and ran its win streak to 17 in a row over Memphis. The sweep marked Wichita State's third series sweep of the season.
The no-hitter for Barber is the first of her collegiate career and 21st in program history. In 5.0 innings, she struck out nine and walked four, while earning her ninth win.
CC Wong had four of Wichita State's 13 hits on the day, including the walk-off RBI double that scored Madyson Espinosa. Her four hits tied a career high. Sami Hoodbroke out of a slump with a pair of doubles. Bailey Urban singled twice to go with an RBI. Jessica Garcia drove in a run behind two singles. Lainee Brown delivered a Senior Day three-run home run and Krystin Nelson brought two home on a single.
After two scoreless innings, Wichita State finally broke through in the bottom of the third on Urban's RBI infield single. Two batters later, Brown smacked a three-run homer off the scoreboard in left to make it 4-0.
Wichita State put the finishing touches on the weekend behind a four-run bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Garcia and Nelson upped the lead to 7-0 and then Wong sent a full count pitch off the wall in right-center, scoring Espinosa from second to walk off the Tigers.
Wichita State plays host to the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship, May 8-11 at Wilkins Stadium.
