HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Beth Akins with Horizons Mental Health Center says people are using mental health services even during the pandemic.
"People are staying home, but they are reaching out and calling crisis lines," Akins said. "The stress is starting to affect people, the anxiety, the depression, all of those intense emotions are starting to wear on people."
Technology is helping people meet with their counselors while social distancing.
"Horizons is still available to see people," Akins said. "We're just seeing people in a different way. Instead of seeing them face-to-face, we've adjusted our services, so that we can keep our clients safe."
If you're new to mental health care, though, they'd still like to hear from you, if you need help.
"When the things that a person is feeling begin to interfere with their ability to function, that's a definite sign that somebody should reach out and get some help," Akins said. "You know, I think we all, sometimes, could benefit from having somebody to talk to, from learning some new coping strategies."
Horizons regular hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (620) 663-7595 to be assessed to find out whether a telemedicine appointment with the computer or the telephone is more appropriate for your situation, or if you have an immediate need to talk to someone, the 24-hour crisis line is 1-800-794-0163.
