NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board gave approval to several matters connected to the shut down of schools during a special meeting Wednesday night.

The Board approved the purchase of 250 Chromebooks for students. The computers were to be used for next year, but with the district implementing online learning starting next month, the computers are needed now. Students will begin online classes on April 1st and those who do not have a computer will be able to get one.

A survey has been sent out to all USD 309 patrons to find out who does not have internet access. Those patrons will be given access to the internet through a provider either for free or at a reduced cost.

Teachers will be available to answer questions during the school period from 9 a.m. until 12 noon although Superintendent Dr. Jeanne Stroh said most teachers will probably go beyond that. Stroh says this is not voluntary classroom work as students will be expected to attend and there will be grades and tests just like a regular school day.

Since next week was to be spring break no meals will be served, but the district will provide extra breakfast and lunch bundles to get families through the five idle days next week. Daily meals will resume on March 30th.
