HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Class 3A State Girls Basketball Tournament ended up saving the best for last. It was a double overtime donnybrook between Halstead and Scott City that ended with the Dragons winning in exciting fashion 45-42.
Scott City led after one 11-9 and outscored Halstead 9-3 and 9-8 in the second and third periods. Halstead made a furious comeback and outscored Scott City 13-4 to tie the game at 33 and send it to overtime.
In the first overtime, neither offense did a lot, but both teams were able to keep it alive and it was a 5-5 period.
In the second overtime, Halstead outscored Scott City 7-4 for the 45-42 win. The Dragons were led by Kaleigh O'Brien's 13 points. Karenna Gerber added 12. The Lady Beavers were paced by Brynn McCormick's 15 and Emily Weathers 10 points.
The Dragons close their season at 21-3. Scott City finishes at 20-4.
