SHAWNEE COUNTY — Investigators are working to determine the cause of a Sunday afternoon fire at a Kansas home.

Just after 1p.m. Sunday, fire crews responded to a structure fire at a home at 2529 SE Minnesota Avenue in Topeka, according to Deputy Chief Kelly Adams.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the single story wood frame residential structure. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, keeping it confined to the structure of fire origin. During a search of the structure, firefighters rescued three dogs and one hamster. Two adults and four children were displaced from the residence as a result of the fire.

The estimated dollar loss is $105,000 including $70,000 in structural damage, according to Adams. Fire crews found working smoke detectors in the home.
