HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Valentine's Day can be a big day for florists and that's true here in Hutchinson, as well. Mitzi Alexander and Karen Maness co-own Absolutely Flowers. Alexander says she knows what most men will ask for when they come in.

"The rose is traditionally what most men will ask for," said Alexander. "Valentine's Day tends to be a day that men buy flowers and a rose is what men know. They're familiar with a rose, so that's what they feel most comfortable asking for."

There are lots of other options, though, if men want to do something different, or if women want to buy flowers for themselves or for their significant others.

"There are spring flower options," said Alexander. "That would be tulips, hyancinths, lilies and snapdragon stock. There are also lots of bright colored gerbera daisies that lots of women tend to like."

Alexander said women will often buy gerbera daisies if they are buying for themselves. There are also lots of tropical flowers still available, as well.

Valentine's Day is often the busiest single day for Absolutely Flowers, though sometimes when the holiday falls on a Friday, like it does this year, or on a weekend, business can be down a bit because men think of other options like going out to dinner or on a trip to celebrate the holiday.
