HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department will begin its controlled burning in areas north of the city starting Friday, if weather permits.

The department is wanting to burn off several areas along roads to give them a better chance of cutting off wildfires. Fire Chief Steve Beer says they will be burning along E. 69th Avenue, north of the Sand Hills State Park. Beer says the department was out meeting with residents in that area on Wednesday.

The plan is to do a test burn in the morning to make sure conditions are favorable. If so the controlled burn should start around 1:30 p.m.

Beer says the other areas along Plum and 82nd Avenue will be burned off in the next week or two depending on weather conditions.
