UPDATE: Bid opening for bridge delayed due to retaining wall changes

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Public Works revealed Monday that the bid opening for the 43rd Avenue bridge has been delayed by a month, further pushing back any relief from the congestion that its closing has caused around the Prairie Hills area.

Public Works planned to open bids for the project Monday afternoon. Public Works Director Don Brittain says changes to the type of retaining wall that could be installed on the project caused the delay. Contractors were wanting to submit bids with the different design for the wall so to be fair the bids will now be opened February 20th.

Brittain says whichever contractor wins the bid for the 43rd Bridge project will need to receive agreements from the railroad to access its right of way.

The bridge has been closed for nearly a year after it was condemned by the county when its condition deteriorated beyond repair.

If all goes as planned the project should start by the middle of July with 320 working days to finish.
