HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A group of local churches, civic organizations and dedicated individuals banded together to form Salthawk Community Support after a cut in state funding in 2017. The organization is holding a “Taste of Hutchinson-The Men Cook” fundraiser on Saturday at the Hutchinson Art Center at 5th and Washington.

"Through the commitment of numerous volunteers, leadership of the on-site staff and the financial support of the community partners, we provide a listening ear, help with homework and basic needs, such as clothes, shoes, hygiene items and food for students that are in need," Sally Russell, chair of the Salthawk Community Support board, said.

The need is large in USD 308 at both the high school and middle school level.

"So far this year, we've provided basic needs to 648 students," Russell said. "We've done weekly tutoring for over 99 students, by the volunteer mentors and 442 hours of direct counseling and student support."

Christmas gifts were also provided to 322 students by volunteers this year. Tickets for the Saturday event are $40, but if you're busy, you can still donate.

"Checks can be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church," Russell said. "We are fortunate to be able to fall under their 501(c)3."

You can also donate online on the donate page at trinityhutch.org.
