SHAWNEE COUNTY — Fire crews were busy overnight on the scene of a house fire in Topeka.

Just after 11:30p.m. Thursday, fire crews responded to a fire at a home at 2001 SW Oakley Avenue in Topeka, according to fire investigator Zach Bottenberg.

Upon arrival, fire crews reported heavy smoke showing from the one story residential wood structure.  Fire suppression crews quickly extinguished the fire, keeping it contained to the original structure.

Fire department investigators learned the homeowner arrived home just in time to discover the fire and was able to save his pet dog. The pet cat ran out of the home while crews were  fighting the fire and had not been located, according to Bottenberg.

The preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire to  be accidental associated with an electrical branch failure in the ceiling of home.

The estimated structural dollar loss is $40,000, according to Bottenberg. There were no injuries.

No smoke detectors were sounding within the residence.
