HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A day after Reno County District Judge Tim Chambers announced he would not seek re-election, Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder said he will seek that seat.

He says he will retire as district attorney in June 1 — then concentrate trying to convince voters the elect him as judge for the Chambers seat.

Schroeder was elected in 2000 and has been the D.A. since 2001 and was the assistant district attorney under Judge Chambers when he held that office. He joined the office in Aug. 1, 1989 and was promoted to Deputy District Attorney in 1998.

He said he is preparing letters announcing his retirement to the appropriate state agencies. With his announcement, he said the Reno County Republican Party then will elect someone for appointment by the governor to fill the last six months of his fifth term as D.A.

Schroeder said he hopes he’ll be remembered as someone of unquestioned integrity who honestly cared about people and had a passion and strong work ethic and fought hard to ensure the safety of this community.

“After more than 30 years in the district attorney’s office, I’m pulling down the curtain on my career as a criminal prosecutor,” he said. “Hopefully, voters will want a curtain call as a judge.”
