HPD offers some helpful tips this Christmas season

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department has taken a few reports of porch piracy during this Christmas season, but for the most part, it has been quiet. Still, there are many things you can do to stay safe and protect your home.

When shopping, park in a well-lit and well-traveled area. Always be aware of your surroundings. It is always a good idea to lock your goodies in the trunk. Don't leave them visible to anyone.

One of the things many are unaware of is the information you can give to thieves on social media. Be careful what you share, whether it’s your travel plans or the gifts you received. You never know who is taking note of that. Check your privacy settings to control who can see what. Keep in mind that when a friend likes or comments on a post, others may see it as well.

Don’t let mail or newspapers build up if you’re heading out of town. Ask a friend or family member to collect your mail or ask the post office to hold it until you’re back. Get to know your neighbors. Neighbors are a great resource and sometimes the best security system.

And, of course, if you are going to celebrate Christmas with a party, make arrangements for a designated driver before you go out celebrating the holiday season. Never drink and drive.
