HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 37-year-old who entered pleas earlier this year to a number of criminal charges didn’t receive any relief at sentencing Friday from Reno County District Judge Trish Rose.

Martin Andes, who entered guilty pleas to criminal threat, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon was denied a departure from the judge. She sentenced Andes to more than 6 1/2 years in prison.

The defense argued for some relief, citing his attempt to change his life. Andes found religion and joined other programs to teach him how to live in society.

However, the state noted that he has 42 prior convictions including aggravated robbery and aggravated arson and believes he doesn’t deserve probation. Judge Rose agreed and denied the defense request.

Andes had been charged with aggravated kidnapping, but the state dropped that charge as part of the plea agreement.

The case started at the Sunflower Inn on Feb. 12 of this year when police were called for the report of an armed subject. Two employees at the motel told police they were threatened by Andes and said he put them in fear for their safety.

He’s also alleged to have forced his girlfriend into a car at gunpoint and threatened to kill her while holding the gun to her head. Their 8-month-old child was also in the vehicle at the time.

During the incident, Andes also fired the gun in the air a couple of times while driving around the Hutchinson area.
