CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 3 seed Wichita State baseball dropped its American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship opener to No. 6 seed South Florida, falling to the Bulls 7-2 Tuesday.
Wichita State (30-22) will face seventh-seeded Houston (19-33) in an elimination game Wednesday with the first pitch around 5:30 CT.
Couper Cornblum went a perfect 2-for-2 and hit his team-best fifth triple of the season, while Corrigan Bartlett tallied his second triple of 2021, pacing WSU at the plate. Andrew Stewart also collected a hit and drove in a run as well.
Shocker starter Liam Eddy (5-8) took the loss on the mound after giving up three earned runs on five hits with one strikeout in two thirds of an inning.
Daniel Cantu led the Bulls (25-26), going 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. Roberto Pena also homered in the contest for USF.
South Florida starting pitcher Collin Sullivan (3-3) earned the win after surrendering two earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in 5 2/3 innings of work.
