HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is personally very impressed with how Amy Coney Barrett has handled herself throughout the confirmation hearings this week.
"She certainly conveyed the proper temperament, intellect and maybe most importantly, an understanding of what I think is the proper role of a judge in our system of government. It's not to make law. It's to interpret law and to interpret our Constitution. Judge Barrett uses the tools of interpretation for Constitutional law that, from my perspective, are correct."
Schmidt explained what it means to be a textualist and an originalist.
"She believes the way you interpret the Constitution is read what it says and when there's ambiguity, your first stop in trying to understand what the words mean is the original meaning as Americans understood them when they adopted those provisions in our organic law. I'm very excited and I'm hopeful she's going to be confirmed soon."
Kansas argued three cases before the Court this past term. Also, disputes between states go directly to the Supreme Court for argument.
