Monarchs edge Diamond Dawgs 1-0

WICHITA, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs (24-4) edged the Cheney Diamond Dawgs 1-0 at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University Tuesday night in the late game of the Sunflower League Showcase.

With the win the Monarchs and Diamond Dawgs are now tied for the number 1 spot in the league race.  Hutchinson is riding a team record 12 game winning streak while Cheney has lost 4 of their last 5 games in the past week.

Hutchinson's Scott Wolverton led off the top of the eighth inning advancing to 1st base on a dropped 3rd strike. Wolverton advanced to 2nd base on a balk by the Cheney pitcher Jeff Wilson. Wolverton then scored on a Luke Sartori single.  That was the only run the Monarchs needed.

Hutchinson Community College's Cody Farmer earned the win for the Monarchs in relief, Cheney's Jeff Wilson took the loss in relief. Wichita States Preston Snavely was outstanding as the Monarchs starting pitcher going 6.1 innings and only giving up 4 hits while striking out 6.

The four game series between the two teams moves to Cheney tonight with a 7 pm start.
