SALINA, Kan.—It was a combination of the 40+ mph wind and Salina South power that handcuffed the Hutchinson Salthawks on Tuesday afternoon in Salina. Hutch dropped both games of the double-header 12-2 in 6 in game 1 and 11-4 in a lighting delayed game in game 2. Below are recaps of both games.
Game 1 Recap:
Tuesday was a long day for Hutchinson Salthawks , falling to Salina South 12-2..Salina South knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the second inning. Dylan Roberts's sac fly scored one run for Salina South.
Salina South pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning.
In the third Parker Benoit homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring three runs. South scored a total of five runs in the fifth inning. The big inning for Salina South came thanks to home runs by Weston Fries and Garrett Allis.
Zach Davidson pitched Salina South to victory. He surrendered two runs on two hits over five and a third innings, striking out seven. Luke Simpson threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Lakin Franz took the loss for Hutchinson . Franz allowed 12 hits and nine runs over five innings, striking out five and walking zero.
Salina South socked three home runs on the day. Fries went deep in the fifth inning. Benoit had a four bagger in the third inning. Allis put one out in the fifth inning.
Jax Heneha and Franz all had one hit to lead Salthawks . Salina South collected 15 hits. Fries, Benoit, Kaden Herbel, Kaden Budke, Kyren Whitaker, and Allis each had multiple hits for Salina South.
Game 2 Recap:
Hutchinson Salthawks watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 11-4 loss to Salina South in the late game on Tuesday shortened by mother nature due to a lightning delay.
Salina South scored early on a walk by Garrett Allis, a single by Kyren Whitaker, and a double by Luke Simpson in the first inning.. Hutchinson lost despite out-hitting Salina South ten to eight.
In the first inning, Salina South got their offense started when Allis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in a run.
Seth Clemons pitched Salina South to victory. Clemons surrendered four runs on ten hits over six innings, striking out nine. Mikah Giles took the loss for the Salthawks . Giles allowed six hits and six runs over two innings, striking out three. Hutchinson hit one home run on the day. Caiden Beavers had a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Hutchinson totaled ten hits in the game. Giles, Lakin Franz , and Kinser Newquist all had multiple hits for Hutch. Newquist , Franz , and Giles each managed two hits.
Whitaker led Salina South going 2 for 3 in game 2.
Hutchinson travels to Derby on Tuesday, April 19th for a double header beginning at 4pm.
