
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Blue Dragon Quarterback Club Hall of Fame committee announced a five-member group to its 2022 induction class.
The announcement of the 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th and 49th members of the Hall of Fame was made at halftime of Saturday’s Hutchinson-Butler men’s basketball game at the Sports Arena.
The 2022 induction class includes the 2001 Blue Dragon women’s cross country team, women’s soccer players Alicia Robinson and Melissa Heatherington, two-sport athlete Deron McCue and former player-coach-athletic director Randy Stange.
Hall of Fame Induction Day is Saturday, February 5 with the induction ceremony taking place at halftime of the Hutchinson-Coffeyville men’s basketball game here at the Sports Arena.
2001 BLUE DRAGON WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
Just more than 20 years ago, the 2001 Blue Dragon women’s cross country team started the season ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II national rankings. After a few tense moments after the completion of the Division II Championships, the Blue Dragons proved the preseason prognosticators right by winning the NJCAA Division II national championship – Blue Dragon Athletics’ fifth overall national title and first for a Hutchinson women’s program.
Led by legendary head coach and Quarterback Club Hall of Fame member, the late Terry Masterson, Three Blue Dragons runners finished in the top 15 to earn All-America status on November 11, 2001 at Lansing, Mich.
Pam Shelite was Hutchinson’s top runner with a fourth-place finish. Lisa Volk finished seventh and Ruth Limo – who held the Blue Dragon cross country 5,000-meter record for 19 years – placed 10th at nationals and all three earned NJCAA All-America honors.
The 2021 Blue Dragon women’s cross country team is the second team – joining the 1988 Blue Dragon men’s basketball team – to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
ALICIA ROBINSON - Women’s Soccer 2010-11
Women’s Soccer midfielder Alicia Robinson played for the Blue Dragons in 2010 and 2011.
Considered the best midfielder in Blue Dragon women’s soccer history, Robinson was a two-time Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Year, earning honorable mention NJCAA All-America honors in 2010 and second team All-America honors in 2011.
The sophomore midfielder from Telford, England finished with a team career-record 42 assists. She also ranks fourth in career points (90) and tied for seventh in career goals (24).
Robinson scored 12 goals and led the nation with a school-record 27 assists in 2011, tying for third on the team with 51 points.
Robinson had four game-winning goals in her career, none bigger than the overtime goal she scored against Butler in the Region VI championship game in 2011.
MELISSA HETHERINGTON - Women’s Soccer 2011-12
Joining Robinson is the first of Blue Dragon women’s soccer’s great scorers – Melissa Hetherington.
Hetherington remains the program’s all-time leader in career points (166), goals (66), game-winning goals (14) and hat tricks (9).
She ranks third and fourth in single season points (86 in 2011; 80 in 2012), third and fifth in goals scored (36 in 2011; 30 in 2012) and first and tied for second in game-winning goals (8 in 2011, 6 in 2012).
Hetherington still owns the single-game records for points (16) and goals (7). She also had two games with six goals.
Hetherington was a two-time all-KJCCC and All-Region VI first-team selection. She was a first-team NJCAA All-American in 2011 and second-team All-American in 2012.
DERON McCUE - Baseball/Football 1981-83
Deron McCue was an all-conference selection in both baseball and football for the Blue Dragons.
As a baseball player, McCue was one of the top hitters for the Blue Dragons.
As a football player, McCue earned 1982 NJCAA All-America honors and was the 1982 Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
After Hutchinson, baseball is where McCue left his mark. He also played for the Hutch Broncs summer league baseball team and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and made it all the way to the Triple-A level. Led
Now he is the head coach of the Hutchinson Monarchs summer-league baseball team and the Nickerson High School baseball team to the 2019 Class 4A state championship.
RANDY STANGE - Men’s BKB/Tennis (1979-81), coach (94-97) AD (97-15)
Randy Stange is the only member of the Hall to play, coach and be an administrator for Blue Dragon Athletics.
Stange was a men’s basketball player for Gary Bargen from 1979 through 1981 where Hutch won one Jayhawk West and one Region VI title. He also played tennis for the Blue Dragons.
Stange came to Hutchinson as the men’s basketball coach in 1994. He coached for three seasons and compiled an 85-20 record with a 1997 Region VI championship.
On July 1, 1997, Stange became the Blue Dragon Director of Athletics and stayed in that post through the end of the 2015 season.
Stange oversaw major renovations to Gowans Stadium as well as department-wide success for all 12 Blue Dragon teams in his tenure as the top Blue Dragon.
