HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo announced Monday that it has received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a prestigious honor granted to only the top zoos and aquariums worldwide. This recognition was awarded during the recent AZA Annual Conference held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where 34 facility applications were reviewed, and 33 facilities were granted accreditation.

“Achieving AZA accreditation is a significant honor for The Hutchinson Zoo and reflects our commitment to the highest standards in animal care, conservation, and education,” said Nicole Mantz, Director of The Hutchinson Zoo. “We are one of only 237 (AZA) accredited facilities in 45 of 50 US states and 13 other countries. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers, who strive every day to create a safe and enriching environment for our animals and our guests.”

To celebrate this remarkable achievement, The Hutchinson Zoo will host an AZA Accreditation Celebration on Saturday, October 19th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The schedule of events includes:

10 to 11 a.m. Rehab Behind the Scenes/Open House

11 a.m.-Noon: Meet and Greet – Mini Farm Feeding

Noon-1 p.m.: Otter Keeper Talk and Behind the Scenes

1 p.m. to 2 p.m.: Caiman Training

2 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Porcupine Meet and Greet

3 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Bison Feeding and Behind the Scenes

All experiences are free, and pre-registration is not required. Guests can also enjoy learning stations set up throughout the zoo all day, providing additional educational opportunities for guests of all ages.

“Earning AZA accreditation is a mark of excellence and a testament to a facility’s unwavering dedication to the highest standards of animal care and conservation,” said Dan Ashe, president and CEO of AZA. “Accreditation celebrates the passion and dedication of the hardworking individuals who make up our community. By visiting AZA-accredited facilities, visitors ensure they receive a wonderful educational experience in a safe environment where every animal they encounter receives the very best care.”

The AZA accreditation process involves a comprehensive application and a meticulous multiple-day on-site inspection by an independent team of zoological professionals. The inspection team analyzes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal care and well-being, veterinary care, staff training, safety for guests and staff, educational programs, conservation efforts, and governance.

The Hutchinson Zoo is committed to continuing its efforts in conservation, education, and community engagement. This accreditation ensures that guests can enjoy a safe and educational experience, knowing that every animal they encounter receives exemplary care.
