MIAMI (AP) — Former Buffalo Bills coach Mark Levy, a longtime rival of Don Shula, says the late Miami Dolphins coach was "one of the great credits to the game that has ever been."

Shula, who died Monday at age 90, won the most games of any NFL coach and led the Dolphins to the only perfect season in league history. Shula retired following the 1995 season with 347 wins, 173 losses and six ties, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

Shula became the only coach to guide an NFL team through a perfect season when the 1972 Dolphins went 17-0.&nbsp;

NCAA accuses Louisville basketball of recruiting violations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville has received a notice of allegations from the NCAA that accuses its men's basketball program of committing a Level I violation with an improper recruiting offer and extra benefits and several Level II violations that accuse former Cardinals coach Rick Pitino of failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Trout and Gerrit Cole aren't the only major leaguers with a big financial incentive to get back on the field.

While they head a starry quartet that would take in more than $200,000 per game, 65 players would earn at least $100,000 each time their team wins or loses.

That's according to an Associated Press analysis of their contracts.

Most rookies and those making the minimum would get nearly $3,500 each from a major league payroll of about $24 million per game. Clubs would benefit, too, with huge revenue streams flowing from regional sports networks and national broadcast contracts.

Golf returns to TV with charity skins match

UNDATED (AP) — Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson headline a $3 million charity match on May 17 that marks the return of televised golf. They will be partners against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in a skins match called "TaylorMade Driving Relief." All the money goes to COVID-19 relief.

McIlroy and Johnson will be playing for the American Nurses Foundation, while the Oklahoma State alumni team will be playing for the CDC Foundation.

The match will be played at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida. It will be the club's first event to be shown on TV.

Rays minor leaguer talks about killings of 3 family members

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays minor leaguer Blake Bivens says he learned through social media of the deaths of three family members last summer.

Speaking publicly for what is believed to be the first time about the Aug. 28 deaths of wife Emily, 1-year-old son and mother-in-law Joan Bernard, Bivens on Sunday recalled details of traveling home to Keeling, Virginia, from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he had been on a road trip with the Rays' Double-A Montgomery affiliate.

The 24-year-old pitcher's brother-in-law, Matthew Bernard, was arrested, charged with three counts of murder and is awaiting trial.

Bivens spoke for more than 30 minutes with interim senior pastor Travis Gore of The River Church during a conversation aired live on Facebook.

The athlete said his faith has helped him cope with the deaths.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Cheerleaders danced beneath rows of empty seats and umpires wore protective masks as a new baseball season began in South Korea.

After a weeks-long delay because of the coronavirus pandemic, a hushed atmosphere allowed for sounds like the ball hitting the catcher’s mitt and bats smacking the ball for a single or double to echo around the stadium.

There were faces in the stands at a game on Tuesday — pictures placed in the seating — because fans aren’t allowed into the venues, at least for now.

Instead, it was easy to hear players cheering and shouting from dugouts. And it was a relief to fans watching from home in a country that’s now attempting a slow return to pre-COVID-19 normalcy amid a waning caseload.

The country’s professional soccer leagues will kick off Friday, also without spectators in the stadiums.

As one of the world’s first major professional sports competitions to return to action amid the pandemic, the Korea Baseball Organization has employed various preventive measures aimed at creating safe playing environments.

Players and coaches will go through fever screenings before entering stadiums, while umpires and first- and third-base coaches must wear masks during games. Players are prohibited from high-fiving teammates or signing autographs. Chewing tobacco was banned to prevent spitting. Masks and latex gloves will be required at training facilities.

Fans will be barred from games until the KBO is convinced the risks of infections have been minimized. If any member of a team tests positive for the coronavirus at any point of the season, the league will be shut down for at least three weeks.

On Tuesday, teams tried to create a festive atmosphere in the empty stadiums.

In a game in the capital, Seoul-based LG Twins opened against crosstown rival and defending champion Doosan Bears at Jamsil Stadium, where the outfield seats were decked with huge banners of the Twins’ cheering slogans.

At Incheon, SK Wyverns imitated a home crowd by covering their outfield seats with rows of horizontal banners showing faces of fans wearing Wyverns caps and masks as they hosted the Daejeon-based Hanwha Eagles.

In Daegu, the city worst hit by the virus, the home team Samsung Lions used their huge scoreboard to play video messages from players, celebrities and fans thanking doctors and medical staff fighting the outbreak, which overwhelmed the city’s hospital capacities in late February and March before slowing in recent weeks. The Lions’ game against the Changwon-based NC Dinos was scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN.

A full season of baseball seemed doubtful in early March when South Korea was reporting around 500 new virus infections a day, forcing the KBO to postpone its March 28 season openers.

Play ball: Korean baseball league begins in empty stadiums

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The NCAA has accused the Louisville men’s basketball program of committing a Level I violation with an improper recruiting offer and extra benefits and several Level II violations, including an accusation that former Cardinals coach Rick Pitino failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance.

The notice released on Monday is the completion of a two-year NCAA investigation following a federal corruption probe into college basketball. Louisville acknowledged its involvement in the investigation related to the recruitment of former player Brian Bowen II, which led to the ousters of Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich in October 2017.

The school noted those personnel moves and other corrective measures in a statement and subsequent teleconference in which it said it takes the allegations seriously. The school has 90 days to respond.

Louisville President Neeli Bendapudi said the school would accept responsibility for violations it committed and “will not hesitate to push back” against allegations it believes are not supported by facts.

“What we have done to be a model of compliance, to be a model of ethical conduct,” Bendapudi said, “we truly believe we have gone above and beyond any other institution.”

The NCAA’s notice says the improper offer and subsequent extra benefits were provided by people it identified and defined as “representatives of the university’s athletics interests.”

The most serious violation alleged in the redacted document accuses Adidas employees James Gatto and Merl Code of offering $125,000 combined to the family of a recruit from May to September 2017. Then-Louisville assistant Jordan Fair is alleged to have provided between $11,800 and $13,500 in benefits to coach/trainer Brad Augustine, who was associated with another prospective recruit, while former associate head coach Kenny Johnson is alleged to have provided an extra benefit of $1,300.

Pitino is alleged to have violated the head coach’s responsibility for ensuring compliance by failing to conduct additional inquiries into Gatto’s recruiting assistance of a prospect and not reporting activities to the athletic department’s compliance staff. The Hall of Fame coach was not named in the federal complaint and has consistently denied authorizing or having knowledge of a payment to a recruit’s family.

Pitino, who returned to college basketball in March when he was hired as head coach at Iona, acknowledged the NCAA allegation in a statement.

“I firmly disagree with this allegation and will follow the protocols in addressing this allegation through the administrative process. Due to NCAA bylaws on public disclosure on enforcement issues, I will have no further comment on this matter until it is resolved,” Pitino said.

“We are aware of the report,” Iona said in a statement. “The NCAA has a process to address the allegations. Prior to hiring coach Pitino, we conducted extensive due diligence. We support coach Pitino and expect him to respond within the process.”

Louisville is currently on NCAA probation for a 2015 scandal in which a former basketball employee was found to have paid women to provide sexual favors to recruits and players. That episode resulted in sanctions including the vacating of 123 victories and its 2013 NCAA championship. Though the latest notice of allegations could subject the school to additional discipline, the governing body did not accuse it of a lack of institutional control, considered the most serious charge as a pattern of continued misconduct.

Asked if Louisville is concerned about a so-called “death penalty” and shutdown of the program, AD Vince Tyra said, “We don’t foresee that. I think it’s clear to the NCAA what we’ve done. I don’t want to get too far down that path, but we’ve done all we can do here and made some pretty unparalleled corrections in our program.”

A statement from Louisville notes the school has changed leadership in athletics and basketball, though it does not mention Tyra or second-year men’s basketball coach Chris Mack. KSHSAA releases summer guidelines

MIAMI (AP) — Measuring Don Shula by wins and losses, no NFL coach had a better year. Or career.

He looked the part, thanks to a jutting jaw and glare that would intimidate 150-pound sports writers and 300-pound linemen alike.

Shula led the Miami Dolphins to the only perfect season in NFL history, set a league record with 347 victories and coached in six Super Bowls.

Near the end of his career, Shula’s biography in the Dolphins’ media guide began with a quote from former NFL coach Bum Phillips: “Don Shula can take his’n and beat you’n, and he could take you’n and beat his’n.”

Shula died Monday at his home across Biscayne Bay from downtown Miami, the team said. He was 90.

“Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years,” the Dolphins said in a statement. “He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene.”

Shula surpassed George Halas’ league-record 324 victories in 1993 and retired following the 1995 season, his 33rd as an NFL head coach. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997, and the induction ceremony took place at Canton, Ohio, 70 miles from his native Grand River.

Shula became the only coach to guide an NFL team through a perfect season when the Dolphins went 17-0 in 1972. They also won the Super Bowl the following season, finishing 15-2.

The 2007 Patriots flirted with matching the perfection of the ’72 Dolphins but lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl and finished 18-1.

When asked in 1997 if he was the greatest coach in NFL history, Shula said he didn’t know how to measure that, but added, “I always thought that’s why they keep statistics and wins and losses.”

Shula reached the playoffs in four decades and coached three Hall of Fame quarterbacks: Johnny Unitas, Bob Griese and Dan Marino. During his 26 seasons in Miami he became an institution, and his name adorns an expressway, an athletic club and a steakhouse chain.

But because the Dolphins last reached the Super Bowl after the 1984 season, Shula came under increasing criticism from fans and the media. He was replaced in January 1996 by Jimmy Johnson, and Shula later said the adjustment to retirement was difficult.

“There’s such a letdown,” he said in 2010. “There’s no way you can fill the time you spent as a coach. Life is great after football, but you don’t have those emotional ups and downs you had on game day.”

Shula’s active retirement included plenty of travel and social events. In January 2010, the Dolphins threw him an 80th birthday party at their stadium, and guests included NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham and former NFL coaches Marty Schottenheimer and Dan Reeves.

Hall of Fame fullback Larry Csonka was among the ’72 Dolphins who threw a surprise party for Shula in December to celebrate his 90th birthday.

“It was the first time in the entire time I’m known him where he was genuinely surprised,” Csonka said. “I think he was very happy.”

Shula always enjoyed talking about the 17-0 team, and he and his 1972 players drew criticism for the way they savored their unique status each season.

“People think we’re a bunch of angry old guys who can’t wait for that last undefeated team to get beat,” Shula said in 2010. “We’re very proud of our record, and if somebody breaks it, I’m going to call that coach and congratulate them. Until they do, it’s our record, and we’re proud of it.”

As for regrets, Shula put not winning a Super Bowl with Marino at the top of the list. They were together for 13 years, and Marino became the most prolific passer in NFL history, but he played on only one AFC championship team — in 1984, his second season.

Shula was born Jan. 4, 1930, and raised in Painesville, Ohio. He played running back at John Carroll University in Cleveland and cornerback in the pros for seven seasons with Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington. He entered coaching as an assistant at Virginia in 1958.

Shula became the youngest head coach in NFL history when the Baltimore Colts hired him in 1963 at age 33. The Colts finished 12-2 the following season and were widely seen as the league’s dominant team.

But they lost 27-0 to Cleveland in the title game, and for the next few years continued to come up short.

The humiliation was greatest in the Super Bowl to end the 1968 season. The Colts steamrolled through the NFL, finishing 13-1 and outscoring opponents by a nearly 3-1 margin. After crushing the Browns 34-0 in the title game, they were overwhelming favorites to defeat the Jets of the upstart AFL, which had lost the first two Super Bowls.

But the Colts lost 16-7, blowing numerous scoring opportunities and allowing Jets quarterback Joe Namath to control the game.

The result is still regarded by many as the biggest upset in pro football history, and it contributed to Shula’s departure after the 1969 season. In 1970, after the NFL-AFL merger, Shula joined the Dolphins, a fourth-year AFL expansion team that had gone 3-10-1 the previous year.

Miami improved to 10-4 in his first season and made the playoffs for the first time, and the 1971 Dolphins reached the Super Bowl before losing to Dallas. The following season, when Miami took a 16-0 record into the Super Bowl against Washington, Shula considered his legacy on the line.

Chiefs work out deal with undrafted Patterson

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have picked up additional quarterback depth by working out a contract with undrafted free agent Shea Patterson.

The former Michigan signal-caller started all 26 games for the Wolverines over the past two seasons after transferring from Mississippi. Patterson threw for 3,061 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions last year and finished with 45 scoring passes with the Wolverines.

UNDATED (AP) — The NHL could have trouble getting non-Canadian resident players into that country should the league decide to resume the 2019-20 season soon.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday that players would at a minimum need to follow quarantine protocols if they were to arrive in Canada while the border remains closed due to the pandemic. Trudeau says anyone who arrives from another country will have to follow all the rules of quarantine in an extremely strict manner. However, he adds that an agreement between Canada and the NHL hasn't been brokered.

The Associated Press reported last week that Edmonton and Toronto were being looked at as possible "hockey pod" cities that could host the remainder of the NHL season during the summer months. Games would be played in air-conditioned arenas without fans.

In other developments related to the coronavirus pandemic:

— William Byron showed he's the sharpest gamer in NASCAR's iRacing Series with his third victory in four events. Byron passed Timmy Hill with seven laps remaining at virtual Dover International Speedway, where NASCAR had been scheduled to race Sunday. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has consistently been the best of the NASCAR professionals in simulated racing. Hendrick drivers have won four straight iRacing events, including Alex Bowman's victory last week at virtual Talladega Superspeedway.

— A team executive in the Premier League says the EPL could face years of legal challenges if this season is not completed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish offered public support for the league's "Project Restart" plans after Brighton and West Ham expressed concerns about teams being forced to play their remaining games in neutral stadiums. The league is working with the government to find a safe way of players resuming group training and playing games by June at the earliest.

— Italy's Serie A soccer clubs have been cleared to resume training this week on an individual basis following a clarification from the Italian government. The government had said last week that athletes in individual sports could resume training today and teams on May 18. That sparked confusion and frustration from Serie A clubs, which pointed out that their players would be allowed to train individually in public parks but not inside team training centers. Serie A has been suspended since March 9, when the government ordered a nationwide lockdown.

— Players from Spanish league clubs will be allowed to resume training today as Spain eases some of the lockdown measures that had been in place because of the pandemic. The government is allowing players to train individually at the clubs' facilities while observing a series of safety measures pre-established by the league and local authorities. The league prepared a detailed four-phase training protocol that has already been distributed to clubs. Smaller group sessions and full squad sessions are likely to be allowed in the coming weeks.

— A men's pole vault competition featuring three of the event's biggest names has resulted in a tie for the gold medal. Mondo Duplantis of Sweden and Renaud Lavillenie of France each cleared a height of 16 feet 36 times over a span of 30 minutes Sunday. Both had one miss. Sam Kendricks of the United States wound up third by clearing the bar 26 times. Each man competed from his own backyard.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Former Oakland Athletics pitcher and special assistant Matt Keough (KEE'-oh) has died at age 64.

Keough spent 10 seasons in the majors, breaking in with the 1977 A's and playing for the Yankees, Cardinals and Cubs before ending up with the Astros in 1986. He was an All-Star as a rookie in 1978 and led the American League with 18 losses in 1982.

Keough was 58-84 with a 4.17 ERA in 215 big league games, including 175 starts.

Keough pitched in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers from 1987-90, going 45-44 with a 3.73 ERA.

We plan on starting our season around June 15th. We are waiting on the NBC to release their tournament dates so we can determine how late into June we can play league games before the NBC World Series. As soon as the schedule is finalized I will get it on Facebook and our website.

After discussing the plan outlined tonight by the Governor of the State of Kansas (assuming the counties will follow suit) with the league owners, the Sunflower Collegiate League feels it is in the best interest of the league, teams, players, host families and fans to delay the start of our 2020 summer season. With that said, we are very confident that a start date on or around June 15th will give us a realistic start date to get players in town, allow the virus to taper off&nbsp;in our area, and prepare to play a resemblance of a normal summer schedule of league games. We feel this is also ample time for the state to progress into Phase 2 of the governor’s outlined plans, which allows organized sports and tournament to take place. (See plan link below). On the flip side, we are well aware that there are things out of our control that may require us to make the tough decision to cancel the season in the coming days and weeks. Obviously that is not what we want to do but we know it is still a possibility.Each team will decide report dates for their respective players and as long as the outlined guidelines are being followed, that could begin around June 1st if they would like to begin workouts. One of the biggest factors in the delay is making sure pitchers are in good enough shape to have higher pitch counts without being rushed, as we do not want to take any injury chances with players that have not been playing for two months.In the days to come, we will be looking at what this schedule would look like with hopes of playing somewhere between 32 and 40 league games with potentially non-league games sprinkled in.Over the next few weeks, we will provide more information as far as league protocols to provide a safe playing and viewing environment this summer for all involved. Cowboys land Dalton...Bears pass on Trubisky option

UNDATED (AP) — One veteran NFL quarterback has found a new team, while another appears to have worn out his welcome.

Two people with knowledge of the situation tell The Associated Press the Dallas Cowboys have signed Andy Dalton to a one-year deal, two days after he was released by the Bengals. The contract guarantees the former Cincinnati starter $3 million and could be worth up to $7 million, although he is expected to serve as Dak Prescott's backup.

The Houston native led TCU to an undefeated season that included a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin during the 2010 campaign. He led the Bengals to five playoff berths in his nine seasons with the team but was never able to win a playoff game.

Dalton owns most of Cincinnati's passing records and started 13 games for the Bengals last season.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears are indicating they are running out of patience with Mitchell Trubisky.

A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press the Bears have declined their fifth-year option on the quarterback for the 2021 season.

The move is hardly a surprise considering the way Trubisky struggled in his third season since the Bears drafted him with the No. 2 overall pick. His 2019 statistics sagged across the board from the previous season as he finished with 3,138 yards passing, a 63.2% completion rate, 17 touchdowns and an 83 quarterback rating.

General manager Ryan Pace largely staked his reputation to Trubisky when he traded up a spot with San Francisco to draft him ahead of Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes and Houston's Deshaun Watson.

The Bears acquired 2018 Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles from Jacksonville in March and plan to hold an open competition for the starting job.

— The Chiefs have agreed to a contract with defensive end Taco Charlton, the 28th overall pick in the 2017 draft. Charlton flamed out in Dallas and Miami, but his athleticism is a perfect match for coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defense. The 25-year-old made seven starts for the Cowboys before sustaining a shoulder injury. He was waived just two weeks into last season and was let go by the Dolphins on Thursday.

UNDATED (AP) — Secretariat has won a virtual Kentucky Derby against 12 fellow Triple Crown winners, 47 years after the chestnut colt won the real race at Churchill Downs.

Secretariat was the 7-2 favorite, although there was no wagering. Instead, fans selecting the winning horse online were entered to win a VIP experience at the Derby this fall.

Saturday's 1 1/4-mile race featured computer-generated imagery and was held the same day the 146th Derby had been scheduled until it was postponed by the coronavirus pandemic. The Derby has been re-set for Sept. 5.

— Cologne's players are continuing to train despite three positive tests for coronavirus that have unsettled the German soccer league's restart plans. The squad is currently training in small groups. Players and staff around the league began giving samples Thursday as part of a testing process designed to enable teams to return to full training and then to games later this month. Cologne said Friday that three people had tested positive but didn't name them or say whether they were players.

— Scott McLaughlin has won his second IndyCar iRace in a wild finish that saw most of the leaders crash as they rushed toward the checkered flag. Formula One driver Lando Norris was headed for what appeared a 1-2-3 podium sweep for the Arrow McLaren SP entries on the final lap. F1 still hopes to hold 15 to 18 of the 22 scheduled Grand Prix races. One way to make up for lost time would be to have consecutive weekends on one circuit, like the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Its location in the mountains makes it naturally isolated.

— The NCAA's chief medical officer says widespread testing for coronavirus will be crucial to having college sports in the fall, especially contact sports such as football and basketball. Dr. Brian Hainline expressed cautious optimism in an interview with The Associated Press. The NCAA unveiled a three-phase recommended plan for getting sports up and running on campuses this fall. They all depend on schools having students back on campus.

— Cycling's European Road Championships have been postponed until next year amid the coronavirus pandemic. The championships were scheduled to take place Sept. 9-13 in Trentino, Italy, but the European Cycling Union says the "uncertainty of the current health crisis" means there are not enough guarantees "for organizing an event of such magnitude." The championship will move to either Sept. 1-5 or 8-12 in 2021. The International Cycling Union is expected to announce which dates when it publishes next year's calendar in the coming months.

Billy Beane, the A's executive vice president of baseball operations, issued a statement saying, "Matt was a great baseball man and a proud Oakland A."

The schools recently announced a six-game series in men’s basketball beginning with the upcoming season that includes two games on each campus and two in Kansas City, Missouri.The second football game between the Jayhawks and Tigers will take place in 2026 in Lawrence. The third will happen in Columbia in 2031 before the series concludes the following season in Lawrence.Missouri leads the series 56-55-9 after winning the most recent matchup at Arrowhead Stadium on Nov. 25, 2011.
