NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Soccer postponed the Los Angeles FC's scheduled game Sunday night at San Jose, and canceled Minnesota's match at Sporting Kansas City because of the coronavirus pandemic. The league made the moves Saturday. &nbsp;LAFC had three positive cases among their player group. While the remaining players and staff have continued to test negative, the match was postponed to allow for additional testing and evaluation. MLS said it is evaluating whether the match can be rescheduled. After confirming a case Wednesday, Minnesota had a second player Saturday with a confirmed positive test.

CONWAY, Ark. (AP) — Breylin Smith threw five touchdown passes and Central Arkansas rolled over Missouri Western 52-10. Smith finished 17 of 23 for 283 yards passing before giving way early in the third quarter. UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Clemson has stretched its ACC winning streak to 28 games, but it took the largest home comeback victory in team history to do it.

The Tigers rallied from 18 points down to beat Boston College, 34-28. UNDATED (AP) — Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says the total number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Badgers football program has increased to 22. Alvarez tells ESPN's "College GameDay" that 12 football players and 10 staffers have tested positive. 

Meanwhile, Illinois says starting quarterback Brandon Peters and tight end Griffin Moore will be sidelined for 21 days after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. Illini (ih-LY'-ny) backup quarterback Isaiah Washington also was lifted from Saturday's game against Purdue due to contact tracing protocols. 

UNDATED. (AP) — Cornerback Stephon Gilmore will miss his first regular-season game in three seasons when the New England Patriots visit AFC East-leading Buffalo on Sunday. 

Gilmore has been dealing with a knee injury and was downgraded Saturday, along with rookie safety Kyle Dugger and offensive lineman Justin Herron. They join receivers Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry, who were previously ruled out for Sunday.

Cubs pick up $16.5M option on 1B Anthony Rizzo for 2021

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have picked up their $16.5 million option for Anthony Rizzo, bringing back the popular first baseman after he struggled during the pandemic-shortened season.

The 31-year-old Rizzo hit just .222 this year for his lowest batting average since his first year in the majors in 2011. But he has been one of the majors' most productive sluggers since he was acquired in a 2012 trade with San Diego. 

The Cubs also declined their $3.5 million option for infielder Daniel Descalso, who missed last season because of a left ankle sprain. 

— Outfielder Nick Castellanos (kas-tee-AH'-nohs) is keeping the remainder of his Reds contract that guarantees $48 million for the next three seasons. The 28-year-old hit .225 with 14 homers and 34 RBIs in the pandemic-shortened season, his first with the Reds after signing a four-year, $64 million contract as a free agent. 

— Chris Archer's $11 million option for 2021 has been declined by the Pirates. Archer disappointed in two years with Pittsburgh, going 6-12 with a 4.92 ERA in 33 starts.

— The Yankees have let Tommy Kahnle become a free agent rather than allow him to become eligible for salary arbitration. He is expected to miss most of next season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. 

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — Doc Redman fired a 4-under 67 for a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Bermuda Championship.

Redman was at 10-under 203, one shot ahead of Ryan Armour, Kramer Hickok and Wyndham Clark. Hickok took three putts from a tough spot on the fringe on the 18th at Port Royal. 

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Darren Clarke eagled the par-5 18th hole for a 10-under 62 and a share of the second-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions' TimberTech Champions.

The 52-year-old major champion from Northern Ireland had eight birdies in a bogey-round as he seeks his first title on the 50-and-over tour.

Robert Karlsson of Sweden birdied the 18th for a 66 to match Clarke at 13-under 131.

Gervonta Davis stops Leo Santa Cruz in 6th at Alamodome

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Gervonta "Tank" Davis knocked out Leo Santa Cruz with a stunning uppercut in the sixth round to retain his WBA lightweight championship and take Santa Cruz's WBA junior lightweight title at the Alamodome. 

Davis — 24-0 with 23 knockouts — stunned Santa Cruz with a pair of left-handed hooks to set up the final blow. With Santa Cruz retreating to his own corner, Davis delivered a left-handed uppercut to the jaw that dropped Santa Cruz immediately. 

Referee Rafael Ramos immediately stopped the bout 2:40 into the sixth with Santa Cruz unconscious with his right leg bent behind him.

Wimbledon champ Halep tests positive for virus

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Wimbledon champion Simona Halep (HAL'-ehp) has tested positive for COVID-19. The 29-year-old Romanian player said on Twitter that she is self-isolating at home and "recovering well from mild symptoms." 

The world's No. 2 player skipped the U.S. Open due to fears of catching COVID-19. 

Bottas edges teammate Hamilton for pole in F1's Imola return

IMOLA, Italy (AP) — Valtteri Bottas has narrowly edged Mercedes teammate and championship leader Lewis Hamilton for the pole position for Sunday's Emilia Romagna (eh-MEEL'-yah roh-MAHN'-yah) Grand Prix. Max Verstappen of Red Bull was third.

Hamilton has taken pole in nine of the 13 races this season, with Bottas grabbing the other four.

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The Iowa State Cyclones used a strong first quarter Saturday to get by the Kansas Jayhawks 52-22 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

The Cyclones took advantage of the 11 a.m., start and outscored the Jayhawks 13-0 in the first quarter. Iowa State got on the scoreboard with rushing touchdowns from quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Kene Nwangwu in the first quarter.

Kansas (0-6, 0-5 Big 12) answered back in the second quarter when true freshman running back Daniel Hishaw Jr., scored his first-career touchdown when he scampered in from five yards out on a direct snap out of the “Wildcat” formation.

Iowa State (4-2, 4-1) responded with a touchdown with four minutes remaining in the first half to go up 20-7. Kansas marched down the field on its final drive, but missed a field goal with one second left in the half to keep the deficit at 13 points.

The Jayhawks were led Saturday by their freshmen once again. Freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels threw for 135 yards in the first half with his favorite target being fellow true freshman Luke Grimm. Grimm had four catches for 53 yards in the first half alone.

Sophomore safety Kenny Logan Jr., provided the play of the game in the third quarter when he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to make the score 27-14 in favor of the Cyclones. It was the second kickoff return for a touchdown by the Jayhawks this season and the program’s first 100-yard kick return for a score since 2002 when Greg Heaggans did it against Missouri State.

The Jayhawks scored again in the fourth quarter when Daniels executed a quarterback run play to perfection and scored from 12 yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the season.

The 23rd-ranked Cyclones added two more scores after the Daniels rushing touchdown to make the score 52-22.

Defensively, freshman Marcus Harris picked up a tackle-for-loss to give him 6 ½ over his last three games. Fellow freshman lineman DaJon Terry also picked up his second-career sack and has one sack in each of the last two home games.

Sophomore Nick Channel led Kansas with eight tackles. Senior Ricky Thomas finished with seven, while Logan had three tackles, his first interception of the season and the 100-yard kick return. Redshirt-freshman Steven Parker had a tackle-for-loss in the defeat, while junior Jay Dineen, senior Kyron Johnson, Logan and senior Elijah Jones all had one pass breakup each.

Daniels finished 165 passing yards, completing 16-of-29 passes. He also led the team in rushing yards with 36. He had 58 rushing yards before sacks were accounted for. Kwamie Lassiter II led the team in receiving with five catches for 66 yards. Andrew Parchment had three catches for 27 yards and found Lassiter on a pass play for a two-point conversion after the Daniels touchdown.

The Jayhawks will return to action Saturday in Norman against Oklahoma. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and will be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2.

Kansas falls to No. 23 Iowa State, 52-22

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Taking the field as a road underdog on Saturday afternoon wasn’t new for No. 16 K-State.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Leaving after a 37-10 loss to West Virginia in their first Big 12 defeat of the season was a different experience for the Wildcats.

“I thought our effort was good, we just didn’t have great execution today,” Chris Klieman said. “Had our chances early, maybe punch that first score in instead of getting three. That didn’t help us. We had a couple of opportunities late in the first quarter or early second and we didn’t do anything with it. We weren’t very good on third down on defense.”

K-State (4-2, 4-1) came up with two sacks and jumped out to an early lead in Morgantown, before West Virginia (4-2, 3-2) used a strong second quarter to put away the Wildcats.

The Mountaineers racked up 301 yards through the air on a short-handed K-State secondary.

“For us today, it was probably the play action passes that we really struggled with,” Drew Wiley said. “They’re a tough, physical team and that running back is very talented.”

Malik Knowles came up with a 35-yard touchdown grab to give the Wildcats a boost heading into the break.

Getting the wide receivers more involved has been a point of emphasis for K-State and Knowles’ first touchdown catch of the year was a highlight for the group on Saturday.

It capped off the best drive of the afternoon for the Wildcats, a 73-yard, nine-play drive that saw K-State flash the balanced attack that’s kept the offense on schedule this season.

But it would also mask one of the biggest blows of the afternoon for K-State, as Briley Moore left the game with an injury after his second catch of the game.

Phillip Brooks hauled in four receptions for 39 yards to lead all K-State receivers in Morgantown.

Early in the second half, the K-State defense did their part to get back into the game, holding West Virginia to a field goal attempt at the goal line. The Mountaineers would settle for four field goal attempts on the afternoon.

“Coming into the game, we knew we were going to have to be pretty physical, so just trying to make something happen up front,” Wiley said. “Wish we could have gotten more of it, but Wyatt [Hubert] had a really good game, I thought Eli Huggins had a good game as well.”

An interception returned for a touchdown on the Wildcats’ next drive of the game would prove to be the tipping point. West Virginia brought the nation’s top defense - among teams that have played at least two games - into Saturday’s game and held K-State to just 225 yards of total offense.

Against that Mountaineers defense, K-State struggled to establish the run game that helped them pull road upsets against Oklahoma and TCU this season.

Deuce Vaughn rushed nine times for 22 yards in the loss.

“I told the guys after the game, we’re all going to take ownership of this, coaches included, myself included,” Klieman said. “But we’ve got to be able to wash it away quickly. We have to get ready for a really good Oklahoma State team.”

Saturday also marked the first game of the season where the Wildcats failed to come up with an interception, while three picks helped the West Virginia defense control the flow of the game.

Howard finished the afternoon 19-for-37 for 184 yards and a touchdown.

K-State returns to Manhattan for their next Big 12 matchup, a clash with No. 6 Oklahoma State on November 7 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game will air on ABC at 11 a.m. or FOX at 3 p.m.

K-State Falls at West Virginia, 37-10

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The best way to describe the 46-41 Salthawk win over Newton Friday night at Gowans Stadium is that Hutchinson survived.&nbsp;

Defensive Coordinator Scott Yantes earned his 200th win as a Salthawk assistant coach over a 24 year span.&nbsp; His defense stepped up to jump on three Newton fumbles, one for a Salthawk touchdown with 27 seconds to go in the 2nd quarter.&nbsp; Senior linebacker Jack Hawver found the loose football in the endzone to give Hutchinson a 21-17 lead at the half.

Senior running back Alec McCuan amassed 240 yards on 30 carries while scoring 3 touchdowns to lead the Hutchinson ground attack. With 58 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter Newton had taken the lead on a 22 yard field goal 29-28, but Hutch High's Treyton Peterson returned the Newton kick-off 79 yards to put Hutchinson back on top 34-29.

This game was a classic that included 11 lead changes the final coming on a McCuan 25 yard run with 6:43 to go in the contest.

Hutchinson (8-1) with it's best record in the past 4 years will host Wichita's Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles (5-2) at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson next Friday night.&nbsp; Bishop Carroll received a forfeit win over Valley Center due to a COVID-19 breakout at Valley Center High.

The Detroit Tigers have hired Hinch, who returns to a major league dugout after being fired by the Astros last winter in the wake of Houston's sign-stealing scandal.

— The Mets have claimed 30-year-old relievers Nick Tropeano and Jacob Barnes off waivers. Tropeano was 1-0 with a 1.15 ERA in seven games and 15 2/3 innings for the Pirates this year, striking out 19 and walking four. Barnes fanned 24 in 18 innings for the Angels this past season while going 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA.

— Major League Baseball has canceled an owners' meeting and the annual winter meetings because of the coronavirus pandemic. Owners had been scheduled to gather from Nov 17-19 in Arlington, Texas. No. 1 Clemson turns to Uiagalelei with Lawrence sidelined

UNDATED (AP) — Freshman quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is expected to start for Clemson on Saturday against Boston College while Heisman Trophy candidate Trevor Lawrence remains in isolation.

Lawrence tested positive for the coronavirus and says he has mild symptoms.

Uiagalelei has played five games this season, completing 12 of 19 passes and rushing for two touchdowns.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has said no other players were affected by Lawrence's positive test. 

NFL: Chargers-Broncos game still on despite COVID-19 cases

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL says the Chargers and Broncos game Sunday is not in jeopardy after players from both teams tested positive for COVID-19. 

The Chargers are likely to be down to their third string players at right guard and right tackle because of injuries and because two linemen were placed on the COVID-19/reserve list. They scrapped practice after right guard Graham Glasgow tested positive. 

The Broncos were already in the league's intensive coronavirus protocols, which began when running backs coach Curtis Modkins contracted the virus two weeks ago. Modkins returned to work Monday.

UNDATED (AP) — College football's bowl schedule is finally set and will begin Dec. 19, the day most of the major college football conferences are set to play their championship games. 

The 37-game bowl schedule will now include several mainstays like the Holiday Bowl in San Diego and the Hawaii Bowl because of issues related to the pandemic. 

But there will still be opportunities for 72 teams to go bowling in the 36 games that lead up to the College Football Playoff national championship on Jan. 11 in Miami Gardens, Florida. 

UNDATED (AP) — The NBA and its players have agreed to extend the deadline for opting out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement by one week until Nov. 6.

Talks will continue in the interim regarding the numerous issues that have to be decided before next season begins.

It is the fourth extension of the opt-out deadline since the pandemic started in March. The NBA said that if either the league or the Players Association chooses to opt out by that date, the CBA would be terminated Dec. 14, unless the parties agree otherwise.

UNDATED (AP) — Hall of Fame cornerback Herb Adderley has died at 81. His death was confirmed on Twitter by his cousin Nasir Adderley, a safety for the Los Angeles Chargers. No details were given. 

Adderly played on six NFL title teams over a 12-year career with Green Bay and Dallas. He was a star running back at Michigan State, but Packers coach Vince Lombardi switched him to defense. He played in four of the first six Super Bowls and won five titles with Green Bay and one with Dallas. Along with former teammates Fuzzy Thurston and Forrest Gregg, Adderley is one of three players in pro football history to play on six championship teams. 

After his retirement, Adderley was a crusader for the rights of former players.

EL DORADO – Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2020-21/bios/flanagan_teagan_iz8r">Teagan Flanagan</a>&nbsp;slashed his career-best 8,000-meter time and helped the No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team to a runner-up finish at the 2020 Region VI Championships on Friday.

Flanagan cut 8.2 seconds off his previous best with a time of 24:58.80 to finish third in both the Region VI race and Jayhawk West race. Flanagan posted the third-fastest 8K time by a Blue Dragon in a Region VI Championship. The time was also the ninth-fastest overall in Blue Dragon history.

Division II Cowley won the overall men's title, but Cloud County was the Division I Region VI champion with 59 points. The Blue Dragons had 99 points in the region team standings and 46 in the Jayhawk West standings.
