MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Miles McBride scored 18 points to help No. 14 West Virginia beat Kansas State 69-47 on Saturday in the Mountaineers’ first game in two weeks because of COVID-19 protocols..

Jalen Bridges added 12 points and Taz Sherman had 10 for West Virginia (10-4, 3-3 Big 12).

“I thought we were a bit rusty offensively, but defensively we stepped up and played one of our best games of the year,” McBride said. “We’ve been watching a lot of film and getting mental reps. Guys that could get on the floor did and we worked a lot on defense.”

Mike McGuirl led Kansas State (5-11, 1-7) with 15 points, and Selton Miguel had 10. The Wildcats had 28 turnovers, the most by a Big 12 team this season and the most in a game under coach Bruce Weber. West Virginia scored 26 points off those mistakes.

“That’s the difference in the game,” Weber said. “We have to play stronger, but we got our butts kicked.”

The Wildcats got within eight points in the second half, but Sherman hit a two 3-pointers in an 8-0 run for West Virginia.

“The guys that had been working out looked good, but the other guys struggled,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “We’ve got to get those guys back in playing shape which is hard with our schedule.”

Huggins said this was a good because the team hasn’t been all together in 14 days.

“It was big since we came off a loss two weeks ago and then got hit with COVID,” he said. “We really hadn’t had a time where we had more than four guys recently. Had to get anything done with that.”

West Virginia: Played well in its first game back in 14 days, but it helped to play one of the worst teams in the conference.

Kansas State: Had way too many turnovers to stand a chance. The Wildcats have lost five straight games by double digits.

McBride, Bridges help No. 14 West Virginia beat K-State

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — De’Vion Harmon scored 22 points and Oklahoma beat No. 9 Kansas 75-68 Saturday for its second victory this month over a top-10 opponent.

Oklahoma (9-4, 5-3 Big 12) has won three of its last four games against Kansas (10-5, 4-4) in Norman and is 8-1 at home this season at the Lloyd Noble Center. Included in that record is a win over then-No. 9 West Virginia on Jan. 2.

Kansas, which entered the game coming off losses at Oklahoma State and No. 2 Baylor, now has lost three straight games for the first time since February 2013. Marcus Garrett had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks, who were limited to two offensive rebounds. Kansas entered the game leading the Big 12 in rebounding margin but the Sooners outrebounded them 36-26.

“Big-time battle,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “Both teams, I thought, fought like crazy. Buckets were hard to come by, at times, on both ends of the floor. Again, just proud of our guys. A game that could have gone either way. Guys hung in there, got a little bit of a margin there late, made free throws late and did a good job to close it out.”

A 9-2 run by Oklahoma broke open what had been a one-possession game and Austin Reaves’ first basket (after starting with seven misses) put the Sooners ahead 60-54 with 5:53 left.

Kansas pulled within 63-60 when Ochai Agbaji split a pair of free throws with 3:40 left, but Reaves and Umoja Gibson each followed with a driving layup to make it 67-60 and Kansas came no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Reaves, Elijah Harkless, Harmon and Reaves again each hit two free throws in the final 1:36 for the Sooners. Reaves scored 16 points, all in the second half, and made 10 of 11 free throws.

“I was just struggling the first half. I didn’t play well and that’s on me, 100 percent on me, and I mean, it’s in the past now,” Reaves said. “You go to halftime, you regroup and then you go out and you do what you can do to help the team win. But we really just stuck with the plan, stuck with what the coaches wanted us to do and at the end, we came out with a good win.”

The Jayhawks put Oklahoma in the bonus early in the second half – complaining about it earned Kansas coach Bill Self a technical foul – and the Sooners took advantage, making 18 of 22 foul shots after not having a free-throw attempt in the first half. Kansas made 10 of 14 free throws.

Garrett said Self’s postgame message was simple: “We’ve got to come together. Something has to change. The season is definitely not going how we expected it, but something has to change.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks went 0-3 during a brutal stretch of road games, but they know no one will feel sorry for them. Coach Bill Self will continue to look for solutions to prevent his team from losing four straight games for the first time since 1988-89, Roy Williams’ first season as Kansas coach.

Oklahoma: Oklahoma hasn’t cracked the Top 25 this season, but now is in sole possession of third place in a league with five top-15 teams. With the wins over West Virginia and Kansas this month, the Sooners are looking like a potential NCAA Tournament team.

Self, on dealing with the aftermath of a third straight loss: “We go back to practice. We’re just like 97 percent of the other teams in America. We’ve had a hard stretch, but we’ve played three road games against tournament teams. I don’t think we’re talented enough not to have a hard stretch if we don’t play well if we’re playing on the road against teams that are tournament teams.

“I don’t think that it’s broken. I do think that it certainly needs some repairing. I think we need a boost of energy. We may need to shake things up a little bit lineup-wise. … I told our guys the storybook season is done, as far as winning all your games and (getting) a one or two seed, that’s probably done. What we have to create is a storybook ending. That’s still in play.”

Wilson, a redshirt freshman, and Harmon, a sophomore, played together at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, before heading to college. Each scored eight points for their respective teams in the first three minutes of Saturday’s game, combining for 16 of the 19 points scored to that point.

Harmon’s 22 points sends Oklahoma past No. 9 Kansas 75-68

The Barton Community College volleyball team executed a pair of sweeps in their 2021 season opener Friday in Hesston, Kansas.

The Cougars began the Hesston triangular with a 25-16, 25-16, and 25-19 victory over Southeast Community College then concluded its day with a 25-7, 25-9, and 25-14 sweep over the host Larks of Hesston College.

The pair of matches served as a final tune-up before Barton jumps into the heat of Jayhawk Conference play as the Cougars host nationally third ranked Seward County Community College on Monday in a 6:30 p.m. first serve. Adhering to conference protocols, no spectators are allowed in the Barton Gym but the match can be viewed for free via the Barton Sports Network located at BartonSports.com.

Barton trailed 8-5 in the opening set before a pair of Tasiah Nunnery attacks sparked a 5-0 run pushing the Cougars on top for the eventual pull-away victory. In set two, Southeast led for the final time of the match at 6-5 but Jo LaForce provided the early Barton spark with a pair of kills powering Barton to another five point spurt to gain seperation. The Cougars never trailed in the final set, breaking a 5-all tie on a LaForce kill in keeping Southeast at bay for the rest of the match.

Maria Santos led seven players recording kills with twelve on twenty-one swings while defensively Carol Melo put up three blocks with Mylena Testoni and Hanna Miller recording sixteen and twelve digs respectively.

A pair of eight point unanswered stretches set the tone in the opening frame leading to a big victory. Trailing by three early in the second set, Nunnery's attack keyed a six point deficit eraser with Addison Crites' pair of attacks leading a 5-0 run helping Barton double up the Larks at 13-6 in cruising to the fifteen point win. The Cougars never trailed in the third by methodically widening the gap by stringing together multiple three or four point swings.

Nunnery, Testoni, and Melo tied for team high kill honors with six each, Melo leading the block party again with three, while Miller and Nunnery each recorded ten digs.

Source says Profar agrees to deal with Padres

UNDATED (AP) — Jurickson Profar (JUR'-ihk-suhn PROH'-fahr) is staying with the San Diego Padres, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person tells The Associated Press that Profar has agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract. 

Profar hit a career-best .278 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with seven homers and 25 RBIs. He has a .238 average with 59 homers and 222 RBIs in seven major league seasons with Texas, Oakland and San Diego, missing the 2014 and 2015 campaigns due to a shoulder injury.

— First baseman Ryan Zimmerman is returning to the Nationals after sitting out the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that the one-year, $1 million contract would include additional bonus provisions. Mayhew spent the past four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers after stops with the Giants and Lions. The hiring of Mayhew makes Washington the only team in the NFL with a Black team president and GM.

Joe Pavelski and Alexander Radulov (RAD'-yoo-lahv) combined for seven points and the Stars finally opened their season by blowing out the Predators, 7-0.

Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe says that Auston Matthews also will sit out Friday night's rematch against the visiting Edmonton Oilers.

Olympic Officials refute cancellation reports

TOKYO (AP) — IOC President Thomas Bach and local organizers are pushing back against reports that the postponed Tokyo Olympics will be canceled.

Now set to open July 23, the Tokyo Games were postponed 10 months ago at the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and now the event appears threatened again. The Times of London, citing unidentified government sources, reported that the games will have to be canceled. It quoted an unidentified senior member of the ruling government coalition. 

The IOC released a brief statement saying it is "fully concentrated on and committed to the successful delivery of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 this year."

NBC to shut down NBC Sports Network at end of 2021

UNDATED (AP) — NBC will shut down the NBC Sports Network at the end of the year. 

The Network is best known for carrying NHL and English Premier League games as well as NASCAR and IndyCar races. It also carries a significant amount of programming during the Olympics. 

NBC will parcel out events between USA Network and its Peacock streaming service.

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Sungjae Im fired a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over first-round leader Brandon Hagy and four others through 36 holes of The American Express.

The 22-year-old South Korean and PGA Tour rookie of the year in 2019 had seven birdies in the bogey-free round on the Stadium Course at PGA West, highlighted by three in four holes around the turn.

Hagy was in position to join Im at 11 under, but he bogeyed his final hole with a tee shot into the fairway bunker to finish his 70.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/baker_josh_lpkm">Josh Baker</a>&nbsp;picked up where he left off last season and fellow sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;nearly posted a double-double as the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team earned its eighth-straight season-opening victory on Friday night.

Mayers had career highs in points and rebounds and Baker had his eighth career 3-point game as the No. 13-ranked Blue Dragons led from start to finish and defeated the Seminole State Trojans 87-71 in the 2021 season opener at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons improve to 70-19 in season openers and 75-14 in home openers. Now 1-0, Hutchinson will open the 2021 Jayhawk Conference season on Wednesday against No. 10 Coffeyville at the Sports Arena.

Mayers led all scorers with a game- and career-high 22 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor and going 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Mayers added a career-best nine rebounds to pace the Blue Dragons to a plus-17 rebound margin (49-32). Mayers scored 17 points in the second half.

Baker, the 2020 Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year finished with 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Baker added five steals, four rebounds and three assists.

The Blue Dragons built a 43-29 halftime lead despite shooting only 36.4 percent (12 of 33) in the first half. Hutchinson shot 56.5 percent in the second half (13 of 23), but outscored Seminole State only 44-42 in the final 20 minutes.

Hutchinson led by as many as 23 points early in the second half, but the Trojans managed trim the lead to single figures when Azibuike Nwankwo scored with 4:23 remaining to make it 73-64 Hutchinson. The Blue Dragon answered with a quick and decisive 10-3 run over the next 2:40. Both Baker and Mayers drilled 3-pointers. Mayers hit two free throws with 1:46 to play which gave the Blue Dragons an insurmountable 83-67 lead.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/ogle_kate_kntm">Kate Ogle</a>&nbsp;posted career highs for points and 3-pointers and the No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team tied a single-game record for 3-pointers as the Blue Dragons roll to a season-opening victory in Friday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson won its 20th-straight season opener after defeating the Bethany College Junior Varsity 92-34.

The Blue Dragons nailed 16 of 32 3-point goals and tied a program single-game record originally set against Neosho County on November 30, 2015 at the Sports Arena. The Dragons started the game hitting their first six attempts from beyond the 3-point line, which fueled a 22-0 start to the game over the first 7 minutes, 9 seconds.

Seven different Blue Dragons had at least one 3-pointer led by Ogle, who went a career-best 5 of 5 from 3-point range for a career-high 20 points. Ogle was 3 of 3 from long range in Hutchinson's initial first-quarter surge. She had 15 points with all five 3-pointers coming in the first half. Ogle added five rebounds and was 6 of 8 shooting overall.

Freshmen&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/ervin_kalyn_foze">Kalyn Ervin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/suttington_ishante_gbs8">Ishante Suttington</a>&nbsp;also had memorable Blue Dragon debuts.

Ervin finished with 17 points with three 3-pointers, five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Erin had 12 points in the second half. Suttington was 5 of 5 overall from the floor with a pair 3-pointers in a 16-point debut.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/haidara_nafatoumata_7n3l">Nafatoumata Haidara</a>&nbsp;finished with nine points, while sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/alford_tor-e_j660">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;and freshman K.K. Adams had eight points each. All nine Blue Dragons to suit up scored in the game.

The Blue Dragons shot 51.6 percent for the game (32 of 62). They were 12 of 17 from the foul line. Hutch had a 35-30 rebounding advantage. The Dragons had 26 assists, led by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/newsom_cherrelle_oeig">Cherrelle Newsom</a>'s seven assists. Hutchinson had 21 steals, led by Alford's career-high six steals.

The Dragons held Bethany to 24.4 percent shooting (11 of 45). The Swedes started 1 for 10 from the floor. Bethany was 1 of 13 from 3-point range and 11 of 16 from the foul line. Bethany had 32 turnovers.

Ambreenique Williams had eight of her team-high 10 points in the second half. Hunter McGuire had eight points.

Hutchinson led 22-7 after the opening quarter and 41-12 at halftime. The Blue Dragons closed the first half on a 14-3 run.

An Ogle three-point play just 15 seconds into the third quarter gave the Blue Dragons their first 30-point game. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/morris_lani_s4ml">Lani Morris</a>' inside bucket pushed the lead to 40 points for the first time (61-20) with 3:24 to play in the third quarter. The Dragons' largest lead of the game was 60 points at 85-25 and 92-32.

The Dragons started the game hitting their first six attempts from beyond the 3-point line, which fueled a 22-0 start to the game over the first 7 minutes, 9 seconds.Seven different Blue Dragons had at least one 3-pointer led by Ogle, who went a career-best 5 of 5 from 3-point range for a career-high 20 points. Ogle was 3 of 3 from long range in Hutchinson's initial first-quarter surge. She had 15 points with all five 3-pointers coming in the first half. MANHATTAN, Kan.—One of the longest continuous rivalries in all of women's college basketball is set for the first meeting of the 2020-21 season on Saturday afternoon, as K-State visits Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at 4 p.m. • Saturday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, as Josh Klingler (play-by-play) and Jill Dorsey-Hall (analyst) will have the call. • The Wildcats are led this season by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7408">Ayoka Lee</a>&nbsp;and junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7404">Christianna Carr</a>.&nbsp; • Lee, a candidate for all four of the national player of the year awards, leads K-State in scoring (16.8 ppg), field goal percentage (.636), rebounds (7.3 rpg) and blocks (1.9). K-State WBB ends road trip with Dillon's Sunflower Showdown

KU is looking to snap a two-game losing streak after its 77-69 loss at No. 2 Baylor on Jan. 18. Oklahoma has won its last two contests after its 76-50 win against Kansas State on Jan. 19. The Sooners are 7-1 at home in Lloyd Noble Center this season.

Kansas leads the all-time series with Oklahoma, 151-68, and the Jayhawks have won the last three and five of the last six meetings with the Sooners. Kansas won the first meeting earlier this season, 63-59, on Jan. 9 in Allen Fieldhouse. KU is 53-44 against OU in Norman and hold a slight 20-19 edge in games played in the Lloyd Noble Center.

ATLANTA (AP) — Hank Aaron, who endured racist threats with stoic dignity during his pursuit of Babe Ruth but went on to break the career home run record in the pre-steroids era, died early Friday. He was 86

The Atlanta Braves said Aaron died peacefully in his sleep. No cause of death was given.

Aaron made his last public appearance less than two weeks ago when he received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Hammerin’ Hank” set a wide array of career hitting records during a 23-year career spent mostly with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, including RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

But the Hall of Famer will be remembered for one swing above all others, the one that made him baseball’s home-run king.

It was a title he would hold for more than 33 years, a period in which the Hammer slowly but surely claimed his rightful place as one of America’s most iconic sporting figures, a true national treasure worthy of mention in the same breath with Ruth or Ali or Jordan.
