DENVER (AP) — Everything from the history books to the way they've played through most of the postseason suggests the Denver Nuggets are on the verge of capturing their first NBA title in 47 years in the league. The goal now for Denver is to avoid a letdown against the Miami Heat in what will be the first title-clinching opportunity in franchise history. The Nuggets are trying to keep their minds on hoops, not that trophy, and the mission could be helped by the fact that Miami's only win in this series came a week ago in Denver. Also, the Heat have won seven road games during the postseason.

Novak Djokovic wins his 23rd Grand Slam title by beating Casper Ruud in the French Open final

PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic has won his men's-record 23rd Grand Slam title with a 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Casper Ruud in the French Open final. Djokovic broke a tie with Rafael Nadal for the most major singles trophies in the history of men's tennis. Nadal is a 14-time champion at Roland Garros who missed the tournament because he is injured. Djokovic adds to the French Open titles he earned in 2016 and 2021. He is the only man with at least three titles from each major. He also won 10 trophies at the Australian Open, seven at Wimbledon and three at the U.S. Open.

Nick Taylor wins Canadian Open, first Canadian champion since 1954

TORONTO (AP) — Nick Taylor became the first Canadian in 69 years to win his national open, holing a 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth playoff hole to beat Tommy Fleetwood in the RBC Canadian Open. Taylor tossed his putter into the air and jumped into the arms of his caddie after the longest made putt of his PGA Tour career. Fellow Canadian players Mike Weir, Corey Conners and Adam Hadwin were among those who ran out to the green to congratulate him. Hadwin was tackled on the green by a security guard. The last player from Canada to win the Canadian Open was Pat Fletcher in 1954 at Point Grey in Vancouver.

Golden Knights try not to think of Stanley Cup returning to Vegas on verge of title

The Vegas Golden Knights left Florida on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup. The trophy will be in the building the next time they play. That's back at home in Game 5 of the final on Tuesday night against the Panthers. But the immediate task at hand for players and coaches is not to dwell on how close they are to the franchise's first title. The Golden Knights have shown all playoffs and throughout this series that they are championship-worthy.

Status of Tkachuk is biggest question facing Panthers down 3-1 in Stanley Cup Final

The status of leading scorer Matthew Tkachuk is the biggest question facing the Florida Panthers down 3-1 to Vegas in the Stanley Cup Final. Tkachuk left for a stretch during the third period of Game 4 because of an undisclosed injury. Coach Paul Maurice said any of his injured players would be treated before and after flying to Las Vegas for Game 5. Florida would make history by becoming the first team in 81 years to erase a 3-1 deficit in the final.

Martin Truex Jr. surges to 4th career Sonoma Raceway victory

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. has won at Sonoma Raceway for the fourth time. He passed Chase Elliott for the lead after a late restart and held off Kyle Busch for his second NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season. Truex confidently drove his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to another victory on the hilly road course at the base of Northern California wine country, where he also won in 2013, 2018 and 2019. Only Jeff Gordon with five has more victories at Sonoma than Truex, who earned the 33rd win of his Cup career and his second in the last six races.

Sue Bird commands floor once more as her No. 10 retired by the Seattle Storm

SEATTLE (AP) — For more than two hours, Sue Bird was back commanding the middle of the court. At times funny, at times emotional, Bird's 21-year career received a ceremony that matched the longevity of her basketball exploits when the Seattle Storm retired the No. 10 she wore during her WNBA career. The event pushed nearly three hours in total length with Bird's speech taking up more than half that amount. But it was the comprehensive closure that never materialized after Bird's career ended in the 2022 WNBA playoffs. It was a chance for Bird to share her thanks to former coaches, teammates, family, friends and fans who watched her win four WNBA titles and five Olympic gold medals.

That victory made Swiatek the owner of four Slam trophies, including three at Roland Garros. Just making it to the last match of the tournament assured her of maintaining her grip on the No. 1 ranking, where she's been since April 2022.

Oral Roberts claims surprise College World Series bid; Wake Forest, LSU, Virginia also win supers

Oral Roberts will continue its surprising NCAA baseball tournament run in the College World Series after beating Oregon 11-6 in the deciding game of their super regional. No. 1 national seed Wake Forest, No. 5 LSU and No. 7 Virginia also won super regionals to advance. No. 2 Florida and TCU clinched CWS bids Saturday. Winners from the Texas-Stanford and Tennessee-Southern Mississippi super regionals will earn the other two CWS spots. Oral Roberts is the lowest-seeded team to reach the CWS in Omaha, Nebraska, since Stony Brook in 2012.

Phoenix Mercury make travel 'adjustments' following airport incident with Brittney Griner

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Phoenix Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard says the WNBA team will adjust its travel plans following Saturday's incident in the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Nygaard would not say what changes will be made, citing league policy and safety concerns about the team's future road trips. Brittney Griner's teammates say they were startled when a "social media figure" confronted Griner at the airport. Airport officials eventually escorted the team's players to a different room with more privacy. The league says it approved charter flights to all road games this season for the All-Star after she returned from detainment in Russia.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Gunnar Henderson homered for the second consecutive day, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated Kansas City 11-3 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep and extend the Royals’ losing streak to six.

Starter Kyle Gibson earned his fourth consecutive victory for Baltimore, while Ramón Urías had four hits and Ryan O’Hearn homered as part of a three-hit day that also included two walks and four runs scored. The Orioles (41-24) have won four in a row for the first time since May 9-13 and are 17 games over .500 for the first time since July 26, 2016.

It was Baltimore’s fourth series sweep of the season and first since May 19-21 at Toronto.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde moved Henderson into the leadoff spot Saturday for the first time this year, and the infielder responded with a second-inning home run as part of a two-hit day.

Henderson already had two hits and a run Sunday when he smashed reliever Jackson Kowar’s slider 462 feet to right for a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Orioles/status/1667982633614073857">three-run blast onto Eutaw Street</a>&nbsp;in the seventh inning.

“That was loud coming off the bat,” Hyde said.

In nine games since May 30, Henderson is hitting .406 (13 for 32) and has raised his batting average from .199 to .236.

“It just goes to show me that no matter what you're going through, you're going to get through it," Henderson said. “Just keep swinging and just keep trusting the process. It's hard to do. I'll be the first one to tell you it's really hard to do in the moment.”

Salvador Perez homered for Kansas City, which has dropped nine of 10. The Royals (18-47) have the second-worst record in the majors, ahead of only Oakland, and have scored eight runs in their last five games.

Kansas City was 2 for 17 with runners in scoring position during the series. The Royals were swept for the seventh time this season, matching their 2022 total.

“I don’t think there’s one magic button you push to all of the sudden spark a lineup or anything,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “I think it’s consistency of the work and preparation, the quality of the at-bats and hope that we start to string some of them together.”

The Orioles took the lead for good in the third against Mike Mayers (1-2), who loaded the bases before recording the inning’s first out. Josh Lester then singled up the middle to score two runs, and James McCann followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.

Aaron Hicks added an RBI double in the fourth against Mayers, who yielded four runs in five innings of relief for the Royals.

Gibson (8-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. The 35-year-old right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA over his last five starts.

The Orioles took a 3-1 lead against opener Carlos Hernández thanks to Austin Hays’ sacrifice fly and Urías’ two-run double. Kansas City tied it in the third on Perez’s two-run homer to left-center off Gibson.

Orioles: 1B Ryan Mountcastle (illness) remained out of the lineup. Mountcastle has missed four of the last five games after appearing in all but one of Baltimore’s first 60 games. … C Adley Rutschman had a routine day off.

Royals: RHP Zack Greinke (1-6, 4.59 ERA) starts Monday as Kansas City returns home to begin a series with Cincinnati. Greinke is 8-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 14 career starts against the Reds.

Orioles: Baltimore is off Monday. Baltimore has not announced its pitching plans for Tuesday, when its homestand continues against Toronto.

⚾ Orioles roll past Royals to complete sweep

SAN ANTONIO, TX - On a hot and humid day in Texas, Alerick Soularie caught on fire. He hit two home runs, had five RBIs, stole a base and was the driving force for the Wind Surge scoring. The Wind Surge defeated the Missions 8-7 to close out of the series.

The Surge extended their streak of offensive production in the second inning to four games. Soularie crushed a ball, delivered in the middle of the strike zone by Missions pitcher Daniel Camarena, out of the park over the center field wall for a solo home run.

The Missions tied the game in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher Blayne Enlow escaped the inning after loading the bases with only one run given up.

Camerena’s day came to an end in the top of the fourth. After walking two Surge batters and allowing them to advance to scoring position he was replaced by Jose Quezada. After the pitching change, Soularie kept his bat hot and smoked a line drive to center field that proved too much for the Missions center fielder Tirso Ornelas. As the ball rolled up and over his glove Alex Isola and Aaron Sabato were able to run home. Quezada sent a wild pitch past the catcher and Soularie made it home adding another run for the Surge.

Enlow dug his heels in and got himself out of a difficult bottom fourth inning after he allowed a triple and hit two Missions batters by pitch. He forced the Missions to end the inning with the bases loaded after he struck Ornelas out swinging.

In the top of the sixth after getting walked, Sabato stole second base and put himself in scoring position. Justin Lopez for the Missions walked another batter that then set up Soularie to hit his second home run of the day. The three-run shot over the left field wall added more cushion to the Surge lead.

After pitching five innings and giving up only one run Blayne Enlow’s day was over. Carlos Luna came in to replace him in the bottom of the sixth. He was able to pick off a runner on a throw to first base and had a strike out but did unfortunately did give up one run on a sacrifice fly by Kervin Pichardo to right field.

San Antonio continued to chip away at the Surge lead when Pedro Castellanos hit a two-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the eighth Chandler Seagle singled on a ground ball hit to right field that drove in a run for the Missions. Michael Boyle then came in to pitch for the Surge and recorded two strikeouts to keep the Missions rally at bay.

San Antonio refused to give up and got their bats going in the bottom of the ninth. Ray-Patrick Didder hit a two-run home run to make it a one run game. Jordan Brink earned the save when he held the Missions back from securing the come behind win and struck out the final batter swinging.

Enlow earned the win for the Surge and Camerena got the loss for the Missions.

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to 23-33 and the San Antonio Missions fall to 31-26. The Missions take the series 4-2.

NOTES: Soularie set career bests as a professional with his first two home run game and his first five RBI game. Soulaire’s five RBI day is second most for the Wind Surge this season, David Banuelos six on May 10 at Frisco. He also becomes the second Wind Surge player this season with two home runs in a game.

 </figure>SAN ANTONIO, TX - On a hot and humid day in Texas, Alerick Soularie caught on fire. He hit two home runs, had five RBIs, stole a base and was the driving force for the Wind Surge scoring. The Wind Surge defeated the Missions 8-7 to close out of the series.The Surge extended their streak of offensive production in the second inning to four games. Soularie crushed a ball, delivered in the middle of the strike zone by Missions pitcher Daniel Camarena, out of the park over the center field wall for a solo home run.The Missions tied the game in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher Blayne Enlow escaped the inning after loading the bases with only one run given up.Camerena’s day came to an end in the top of the fourth. After walking two Surge batters and allowing them to advance to scoring position he was replaced by Jose Quezada. After the pitching change, Soularie kept his bat hot and smoked a line drive to center field that proved too much for the Missions center fielder Tirso Ornelas. As the ball rolled up and over his glove Alex Isola and Aaron Sabato were able to run home. Quezada sent a wild pitch past the catcher and Soularie made it home adding another run for the Surge.Enlow dug his heels in and got himself out of a difficult bottom fourth inning after he allowed a triple and hit two Missions batters by pitch. He forced the Missions to end the inning with the bases loaded after he struck Ornelas out swinging.In the top of the sixth after getting walked, Sabato stole second base and put himself in scoring position. Justin Lopez for the Missions walked another batter that then set up Soularie to hit his second home run of the day. The three-run shot over the left field wall added more cushion to the Surge lead.After pitching five innings and giving up only one run Blayne Enlow’s day was over. Carlos Luna came in to replace him in the bottom of the sixth. He was able to pick off a runner on a throw to first base and had a strike out but did unfortunately did give up one run on a sacrifice fly by Kervin Pichardo to right field.San Antonio continued to chip away at the Surge lead when Pedro Castellanos hit a two-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh.In the bottom of the eighth Chandler Seagle singled on a ground ball hit to right field that drove in a run for the Missions. Michael Boyle then came in to pitch for the Surge and recorded two strikeouts to keep the Missions rally at bay.San Antonio refused to give up and got their bats going in the bottom of the ninth. Ray-Patrick Didder hit a two-run home run to make it a one run game. Jordan Brink earned the save when he held the Missions back from securing the come behind win and struck out the final batter swinging.Enlow earned the win for the Surge and Camerena got the loss for the Missions.The Wichita Wind Surge improve to 23-33 and the San Antonio Missions fall to 31-26. ⚾ Wichita Wind Surge and Soularie catches fire in San Antonio

BUHLER, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs and Great Bend Bat Cats split a doubleheader on Sunday evening at Wheatland Park in Buhler. The Monarchs won the first game, 6-5, before falling in the second, 6-0.

The two teams opened the three-game series on Thursday in Great Bend, and were scheduled to play again on Friday in Great Bend and on Saturday in Hutchinson. The Friday and Saturday games were both postponed to unplayable fields, so two seven-inning games were rescheduled games on Sunday in Buhler.

GAME 1 Hutchinson and Great Bend went to eight innings in the first game after the two teams were tied at four through seven. Great Bend scored one in the top of the eighth to lead 5-4. Hutchinson plated two in the bottom half, including the game winning RBI single up the middle from Blake Bradford that scored Caleb Cotton and Jaden Gustafson to give the Monarchs the win.&nbsp;

Noah Kelly was credited with the win in the game, pitching just one pitch in the top of the eighth to get out of a jam with runners at second and third. Bradford had two hits to lead the Monarchs' seven hit total, while Jackson Young led the Monarchs with two RBI in the win. GAME 2 The Bat Cats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and never looked back, as they scored three more in the fourth and two more in the fifth to win the second game, 6-0.

The Monarchs offense struggled against Great Bend starting pitcher, Kyle Winkler, who went five innings, allowing four hits, striking out eight and walking just one. The Monarchs hitters struck out a total of 12 times in the game and walked just twice.

NEW YORK (AP) — Arcangelo took the lead at the top of the stretch and won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, making Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race. Arcangelo finished the 1 1/2 mile race in 2:29.23 and as 1 1/2 lengths in front of favored Forte, with Tapit Trice third. After the horse crossed the finish line, the 47-year-old Antonucci doubled over and rested her arm and head on the back of a chair. She kissed the horse on the nose when it returned to the area in front of the winner’s circle.

Trainer&nbsp; Jena Antonucci turned a Triple Crown marred by thoroughbred deaths on the track and threatened by bad air quality from wildfires in Canada into a celebration for racing and women.

Arcangelo took the lead at the top of the stretch and won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, making the 47-year-old Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.

After the horse crossed the finish line, Antonucci doubled over and rested her arm and head on the back of a chair. She kissed the horse on the nose when it returned to the area in front of the winner’s circle.

“When we were walking out, I said there is not a table made for you," she said. "You make the table. You put great people around you, you work hard. Work your tail off. It will come if you do it the right way. Do it the right way.”

Antonucci and Arcangelo did everything right as the 3-year-old son of Arrogate finished the 1 1/2-mile race in 2:29.23 and by 1 1/2 lengths in front of favored Forte, with Tapit Trice third.

“They say there’s no crying in baseball. But they’ve never said it about horse racing,” Antonucci said. “You fight for that spot and you feel you have to prove your worth. Horses don’t care. They don’t care who you are. They know who you are. To have a horse believe in you, and your team, the way this horse does … I wish more people could be like horses.”

Jockey Javier Castellano, who rode Mage to victory in the Kentucky Derby and picked up the ride on Arcangelo when the colt was not entered in the Belmont, said Arcangelo was great.

“This is a wonderful horse. I’m really happy for her, you know, she’s a really good woman," Castellano said of Antonucci. "She’s a good horseman.”

The heart-warming victory put a positive note on a Triple Crown series marred by deaths of 12 horses at Churchill Downs in the weeks around the Kentucky Derby and another on Preakness day for a trainer Bob Baffert. It also ended a week in which the Belmont Stakes was put in jeopardy by air quality problems caused by wildfires in Canada.

Those cleared on Friday and the cloud over thoroughbred racing lifted on Saturday, briefly.

In the final race on the card, Excursionniste sustained a catastrophic injury to his left front leg. Despite efforts by veterinarians, the horse was euthanized. It was the third horse to incur a fatal injury at the current meet. There have been 213 races involving 1,662 horses.

Antonucci, who started riding show horses as a preschooler and later held a plethora of jobs in racing, became a trainer in 2010, running a modest stable. She had sent less than 2,000 horses to the post in her first 13 years.

Antonucci was only the 11th woman to race a horse in the Belmont and the first since Kathy Ritvo sent out Mucho Macho Man to a seventh-place finish in 2011. Dianne Carpenter’s Kingpost had the previous best finish, second to Risen Star in 1988.

Arcangelo came into the Belmont off a hard-fought victory in the Peter Pan Stakes.

Arcangelo, who broke from the No. 3 post position, was always close to the lead in the nine-horse field. Preakness winner National Treasure led a group of seven within striking distance after a half, but as the race progressed Arcangelo stayed on the rail and was running head to head with National Treasure on the far turn that leads to the stretch.

By the time they reached the stretch, Arcangelo moved to the front, opened some daylight and never let any horse get closer than the final margin.

“He’s got the heart of a champion,” Antonucci said.

Arcangelo paid $17.80, $7.20 and $4.,90 and earned $900,000 for Blue Rose Farm, which is owned by Jon Ebbert.

“It’s amazing,” Ebbert said. "What an amazing ride. I’m so proud of the horse. He’s an amazing horse. He’s all heart. We knew he had it in him. Javier rode him perfectly and Jena is an amazing trainer. I’m so lucky to find her. The rest is history.”

Forte returned $4.30 and $3.30 and Tapit Trice was $4.10 to show. Both were trained by Todd Pletcher.

“I’m super proud of both horses,” Pletcher said. “I knew we were asking a lot coming off the 10-week layoff (with Forte). He got shuffled back a little bit and once he got him outside in the clear, he was still making impact at the end, but he just ran out of time getting there.”

Baffert said National Treasure never relaxed for jockey John Velazquez.

“He gave us a little bit of a thrill turning for home, but he was just wasn’t ... .” Baffert said.

Hit Show finished fourth and was followed by Angel of Empire, National Treasure, Il Miracolo, Red Route One and Tapit Shoes.

The 13-race card on Saturday was filled with at least a half-dozen outstanding races, headlined by the $1 million Metropolitan Handicap on the dirt and the $750,000 Manhattan Handicap on the turf.

Cody’s Wish ($3.30) posted his sixth straight win for trainer Bill Mott in capturing the Met Mile in 1:34.36, while the Pletcher-trained Up to the Mark ($5.30) was an easy winner in the Manhattan.

Mott also saw another streak continue when Elite Power won his seventh straight in taking the $250,000 True North.

🏆 Arcangelo wins Belmont Stakes to make Jena Antonucci 1st female trainer to win a Triple Crown race

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Surge had a few opportunities to take the game from the Missions. Unfortunately, they were not able to capitalize and left nine runners in scoring position in the 5-3 loss to San Antonio. Wichita hitters were three for thirteen with runners in scoring position. Wichita falls to 1-4 in the six-game series.

For the fourth time this series and third game in a row the Wind Surge had an offensively productive second inning. Yoyner Fajardo was able to reach third on a wild throw committed by the Missions to second in an attempted pick off. This set up the opportunity for Seth Gray who hit a line drive to right field driving in Fajardo. Gray was able to get home when DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Surge the lead.

The Missions took the lead right back in the bottom of the second when Pedro Castellanos and Ray-Patrick Didder were able to score when Jake Rucker committed a throwing error.

In the top of the fifth inning the Surge were able to tie the game up. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. showed off his speed when he slid head first and beat a throw to home plate from right field on a hit by Patrick Winkel.

San Antonio had an answer in the bottom of the sixth. Michael De La Cruz hit a ball to deep center left field that seemed to be long enough to score a base runner. Fortunately for the Surge, it bounced over the outfield wall and the runner was held at third. The next batter, Castellanos singled on a line drive to left field that broke the tie and brought in the runner from third base. The Missions were able to record four straight hits and scored two runs in the inning.

In the top of the eighth the Surge seemed to catch a break when Fajardo lined out to the shortstop Ripken Reyes and Reyes committed an error. He overthrew first base all the way into the dugout which advanced Aaron Sabato all the way to third base. With two outs, a man 90 feet away from home and another on first Will Holland hit a high fly ball into shallow center field that was easily fielded by the Missions.

David Festa started and pitched four and one third innings, recorded four strike outs and allowed three runs, one earned on three hits.

Baez for the Missions was credited with the win and improves his record to 3-0 and Denny Bentley took the defeat dropping to one and one.

The Wind Surge fall to 22-33 and the Missions improve to 31-25 for the season.

NOTES: The Wind Surge added outfielder Armani Smith from development roster. Anthony Prato was promoted to Triple A St. Paul The Wind Surge dropped six of their first ten series this season. Wichita is a season-low eleven games under .500.

Unfortunately, they were not able to capitalize and left nine runners in scoring position in the 5-3 loss to San Antonio. Wichita hitters were three for thirteen with runners in scoring position. Wichita falls to 1-4 in the six-game series.For the fourth time this series and third game in a row the Wind Surge had an offensively productive second inning. Yoyner Fajardo was able to reach third on a wild throw committed by the Missions to second in an attempted pick off. This set up the opportunity for Seth Gray who hit a line drive to right field driving in Fajardo. Gray was able to get home when DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Surge the lead.The Missions took the lead right back in the bottom of the second when Pedro Castellanos and Ray-Patrick Didder were able to score when Jake Rucker committed a throwing error.In the top of the fifth inning the Surge were able to tie the game up. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. showed off his speed when he slid head first and beat a throw to home plate from right field on a hit by Patrick Winkel.San Antonio had an answer in the bottom of the sixth. Michael De La Cruz hit a ball to deep center left field that seemed to be long enough to score a base runner. Fortunately for the Surge, it bounced over the outfield wall and the runner was held at third. The next batter, Castellanos singled on a line drive to left field that broke the tie and brought in the runner from third base. The Missions were able to record four straight hits and scored two runs in the inning.In the top of the eighth the Surge seemed to catch a break when Fajardo lined out to the shortstop Ripken Reyes and Reyes committed an error. He overthrew first base all the way into the dugout which advanced Aaron Sabato all the way to third base. With two outs, a man 90 feet away from home and another on first Will Holland hit a high fly ball into shallow center field that was easily fielded by the Missions.David Festa started and pitched four and one third innings, recorded four strike outs and allowed three runs, one earned on three hits.Baez for the Missions was credited with the win and improves his record to 3-0 and Denny Bentley took the defeat dropping to one and one.The Wind Surge fall to 22-33 and the Missions improve to 31-25 for the season.NOTES: The Wind Surge added outfielder Armani Smith from development roster. ⚾ Wichita Wind Surge continue to struggle in road series

STANFORD, Calif. — Over the course of this season, the ninth inning hasn't been a place where Texas shined offensively.

Heading into Saturday's NCAA super regional, the Longhorns were 0-16 when they entered the ninth inning trailing. In fact, Texas had only scored 11 ninth-inning runs all season.

The comeback kids, the Longhorns were not.

They say, though, that there’s a first time for everything. And on Saturday, the Longhorns picked a good time to test that theory.

Texas scored five runs in the top of the ninth to stun Stanford in the opener of their best-of-three super regional at Sunken Diamond. With its 7-5 win, Texas moved within&nbsp;<a href="https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/baseball/2023/06/08/ncaa-super-regional-features-texas-and-stanford-baseball-programs/70302564007/" target="_blank">one victory of its 39th College World Series appearance</a>. Stanford must now win two straight games to reach Omaha.

“I just thought it was a great ballgame,” UT coach David Pierce said. “Stanford's a very good team and I'm just proud of our guys. We just continued to fight and gave ourselves an opportunity.”

Texas (42-20) and Stanford (42-18) fought to a 2-2 tie after five innings before the Cardinal used two home runs to distance themselves from the Longhorns. And after stranding two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth innings, UT entered the final frame in search of a miracle.

But Stanford all-conference reliever Ryan Bruno allowed the inning's first three batters to reach base. After a pitching change, Mitchell Daly hit a fly ball that was dropped by Saborn Campbell in right field. That error allowed two runs to score, and Jared Thomas then tied the game on a groundout.

Texas loaded the bases again on two more walks, which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/baseball/2022/09/29/tcu-transfer-porter-brown-trying-to-find-a-home-in-the-texas-outfield/69523819007/" target="_blank">set Porter Brown up for some late-game heroics</a>. The TCU transfer lifted the Longhorns to their first lead of the day with a two-out, two-run single off Stanford freshman Matt Scott.

Brown’s game-winning swing on a 3-1 count came just one inning after Bruno struck him out to end the eighth inning. That strikeout stranded two runners and left UT trailing by three runs.

“Coach always says that it only takes one,”&nbsp; Brown said. “I had a hit earlier in the game … and then had two at-bats that didn’t go my way. I came up with that last at-bat thinking all the pressure was on the pitcher. Took a lot of good pitches, got on a good count and then got my fastball and put a good swing on it.”

Brown’s single was actually the only hit of the ninth inning for Texas, which sent 10 batters to the plate. To open the inning, Eric Kennedy drew a walk. Bruno then hit Jalin Flores with a pitch and loaded the bases by walking Jack O’Dowd. Kennedy, Flores and O’Dowd all reached base on full-count offerings.

“We knew Bruno's a heck of a pitcher, but we knew he's wild at times,” Kennedy said. “We knew we had to be disciplined with him and get him into the zone. Luckily we were able to lay off some tough pitches there and he gave us a few free passes.

“We also talked about putting pressure on their defense. We felt like we could expose them at times. The discipline and the putting pressure on them really played into our favor there into the ninth.”

Stanford coach David Esquer said afterward that if UT's plan was to take pitches against Bruno, "they caught him on the right day." Bruno had saved nine games, but he also had posted a 4.68 ERA and 31 walks over 32⅔ innings.

"Ryan has done a great job for us the whole year, so we're willing to go down with our guys," said Esquer, whose team had been 35-1 when it entered a ninth inning with a lead. "They played a good ballgame and hung in there to the end and came up with the big hit when it counted."

After Texas rallied, Zane Morehouse entered the game and secured his seventh save. He struck out the side in the ninth, each Stanford batter going down swinging.

The final strikeout retired freshman catcher Malcolm Moore, who had tortured Texas pitching throughout the game. Moore produced an RBI double and a two-run homer, and drew a bases-loaded walk during an uncharacteristically wild first inning for Texas ace Lucas Gordon.

Gordon threw strikes on just 11 of his 26 pitches in the first and issued three walks. He entered the weekend having walked just 29 batters over 95⅓ innings.

Gordon eventually settled down and lasted 5⅔ innings. Sophomore Ace Whitehead was credited with the win after he held Stanford scoreless in the eighth.

Key play:&nbsp;After Texas fell behind 2-0, Kennedy hit a two-run homer in the fifth. His 17th homer of the year not only tied the game 5-5, but tied him for eighth place on UT's single-season chart.

Dallas moves on to play first-year coach Pete DeBoer's former team, the Vegas Golden Knights. Game 1 of the West final is Friday night in Las Vegas. DeBoer improved to 7-0 in Game 7s. The 19-year-old Johnston made it 2-0 with 7:12 left, when he gathered a puck that ricocheted off the back board to the left of the Seattle net and scored. Jake Oettinger had 22 saves, and the only Seattle score came with 17.6 seconds left.

Padres pitcher Michael Wacha has no-hitter through 7 against Royals

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Padres pitcher Michael Wacha has not allowed a hit through seven innings against the Kansas City Royals. Wacha has thrown 101 pitches and struck out a career-high 11. He had a perfect game going before hitting Edward Olivares with a pitch with one out in the fifth. The right-hander walked Bobby Witt Jr. with two outs in the sixth before first baseman Jake Cronenworth made a terrific diving stop of Vinnie Pasquantino's grounder to preserve the no-hit bid.

Oakland A's reach agreement for potential stadium site on Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement with Bally's and Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties to build a potential stadium on the Tropicana hotel site along the Las Vegas Strip. Bally's on Monday unveiled plans for a 30,000-seat stadium on the 35-acre site. The project is expected to cost about $1.5 billion. The A's are asking for nearly $400 million in public support from the Nevada Legislature, which could vote on a proposal this week.

MLB's new pitch clock may be leading to more blown saves

NEW YORK (AP) — The pitch clock has sped up baseball as hoped, and it might be leading to more exciting endings, too. A quarter of the way through Major League Baseball's first season with the pitch timer, relief pitchers seem to be bearing the most stress from it, with save conversions dropping to 61.4% from 67.8% at a similar point last season. The save percentage is near the bottom range of the past decade, which averaged 65.1%, MLB said Monday. The high was 70% in 2015 and the low 61% in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Pitchers say the stress of the late innings has become more difficult to process with the pitch clock.

That could change any day. Once again, Morant is in limbo. He's awaiting the outcome of yet another NBA investigation into what could end up becoming a cataclysmic off-court decision. The clock is ticking with Game 1 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for June 1. Commissioner Adam Silver traditionally holds a news conference before the Finals. Morant's status will be a big topic as league officials gather information about the latest off-court issue involving Morant and possible firearms.

Wembanyama about to learn his NBA destination, with the draft lottery on Tuesday

Actor Michael Douglas is a huge basketball fan. And he's become a big fan of Victor Wembanyama. Douglas and every other basketball follower in the world is about to find out where Wembanyama's NBA journey will begin. The NBA draft lottery is Tuesday night in Chicago. The team that wins the lottery gets the right to choose No. 1 overall in next month's draft. And they'll use that pick on Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 French phenom.

Minor league host families, once a pillar of pro baseball, phased out by new CBA

PHOENIX (AP) — After decades of supporting poor, young baseball players as they began their professional careers, minor league host families have officially been phased out. As part of their first collective bargaining agreement with Major League Baseball this spring, minor league players negotiated an end to the practice. Players are now guaranteed furnished housing, something they are celebrating as a more professional arrangement. Many players are also sorry to see host family programs end. So are the families. One former host family organizer told The Associated Press that "when you open your home, you're opening your heart. I'm so sad it's not continuing."

Ohtani pitches 7 innings, reaches base 5 times as Angels beat Orioles 9-5

BALTIMORE (AP) — Shohei Ohtani made more history, becoming the first starting pitcher since 1964 to reach base five times in a game as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-5. Ohtani had four hits and a walk, making up for his shaky pitching with a stellar performance at the plate. He hit a titanic three-run homer and finished a double shy of the cycle on a night the Orioles hit three home runs off him. The last person to reach base five times in a game he started on the mound was Mel Stottlemyre of the New York Yankees, on Sept. 26, 1964, against Washington.

Denver Nuggets focused on vanquishing LeBron James and Lakers, not ghosts of the past

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets aren't concerned about their horrendous history against the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA playoffs as they begin their Western Conference finals against L.A. on Tuesday night. The Nuggets have lost all seven times they've faced the Lakers in the playoffs, including inside the NBA bubble in 2020. But coach Michael Malone said his team is focused on continuing its stellar play regardless of whether it's against their nemesis or not. Peacock will exclusively carry NFL playoff game in a first for streaming service

The NFL is taking another big step into streaming by putting one of its playoff games exclusively on a digital platform for the first time. The league and NBC Universal announced that the Saturday night game on Wild Card weekend will be on Peacock. It will be preceded by a late afternoon playoff game on NBC and Peacock that will kick off at 4:30 p.m. EST. The Peacock game will also be broadcast on NBC stations in the markets of the two teams. Subscription rates for Peacock start at $4.99 per month.

BALTIMORE, Maryland —&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/39869/cole-irvin">Cole Irvin</a>&nbsp;earned his first victory with Baltimore,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/42507/gunnar-henderson">Gunnar Henderson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33546/adam-frazier">Adam Frazier</a>&nbsp;homered and the Orioles stretched the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-royals">Kansas City Royals</a>' losing streak to five with a 6-1 victory on Saturday.

Baltimore has won three in a row for the first time since a May 19-21 sweep of Toronto. At 40-24, the Orioles are 16 games over .500, tied for a season high.

Kansas City (18-46) has lost eight of nine and has the second-worst record on the majors, ahead of only Oakland (16-50).

Irvin (1-2) allowed one run and six hits — on Freddy Fermin’s RBI single in the fifth — over 5 1/3 innings while striking out five.

“I’m just happy to be in the win column — in this uniform, too,” Irvin said.

The right-hander, acquired in January from Oakland, was expected to be part of Baltimore’s rotation after pitching to a 3.98 ERA in 30 starts for the Athletics last season.

Instead, he was sent to Triple-A Norfolk after a 10.66 ERA in three April starts. He remained in the minors except for a one-game big league relief appearance on May 20.

“Humility goes a long way, and I think there some things I needed to address as a man and I felt like I did that down there,” Irvin said.

Recalled Saturday to make his first major league start since April 13, Irvin demonstrated much better control, walking none after issuing eight over 12 2/3 innings over his first three starts.

“His first couple starts here, he just had a lot of walks and was pitching behind in the count,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. “Today, he was more aggressive in the strike zone and pitching to contact.”

Irvin was also helped by his defense. HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Mother Nature has ruined the home opener for the Hutchinson Monarchs, once again. Monarchs owner/GM Marc Blackim has informed Hutch Post that tonight's game against the Great Bend Bat Cats has been postponed due to last nights rain at Hobart-Detter Field.

The plan is to possibly have a makeup doubleheader on Sunday evening at Hobart-Detter Field, but once again it will be weather pending.
