Closings and delays for Feb. 18-19

Stage 9 is auditioning for April performances of “A Piece of My Heart”. &nbsp;The date of the performances is the weekend after Easter, April 24-26 with matinee on April 27. &nbsp;Performances will be at Stage 9, which is at 9 South Main here in Hutchinson. &nbsp;

A Piece of My Heart is a drama based on women’s experiences in Vietnam and after. &nbsp;Nurses, USO, army intelligence and Red Cross. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Kris Anshutz will be having auditions on Thursday the 20 from 6:30 to 8 PM and Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM. If you are not available at those times you can call her at 620-664-1489 and set up a time. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Rehearsals will begin on Feb. 24 with rehearsals set for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. &nbsp;They will be flexible in the beginning. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Here are the roles that they are filling for this production. &nbsp; 1 Male – Age 20-40. He will play all the male roles and will not be needed at all rehearsals&nbsp;&nbsp; 6 Female parts will be cast. •&nbsp; A black woman from age 30-50 •&nbsp; An Amerasian from age 20-40 •&nbsp; A woman singer preferably a guitar player from age 20-40 •&nbsp;&nbsp;And three more women to play nurses from age 20-40.

Adopt a Furry Friend: Toffee

The Hutchinson Soroptimist Club is hosting their annual Mommy and Me Dance on Saturday, Feb. 22.&nbsp;

The event will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will be held at the Journey Church in South Hutchinson. The church address is 808 S. Popular.&nbsp;

The dance will feature DJ 620 In the Mix. In addition to the dance, there will be games and refreshments. Cinderella and Batman will also make an appearance.&nbsp;

The dance is a fundraiser for their organization and proceeds will help fund their annual awards and to have emergency funds for women in Reno County that are in need.&nbsp;

We are still accepting appointments for our newly launched Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Appointments are available on select days from Feb. 10 through Mar. 31.

The VITA program, operated by the IRS for over 50 years, provides free tax help to qualified individuals who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. This will be the first tax season that MCCF will serve as a VITA site, with all volunteer tax preparers being locally sourced.

To qualify for the program, individuals must meet one or more of the following criteria: • People who generally make $67,000 or less • Persons with disabilities • Limited English-speaking taxpayers

Note that VITA services are available for current-year (2024) tax returns only.

Appointments will be one hour long, with two volunteers reviewing each return. Available appointments are limited and must be scheduled in advance.

Appointment times: • Mondays: 5:30–7:30 PM. • Wednesdays: 1–4 PM. • Thursdays: 2–4 PM

The Foundation will also be open one Saturday, from 9 AM to noon, on March 15.

Judge disagrees with Soto's conclusion that Mets have better chance for titles than Yankees

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Aaron Judge naturally takes issue with Juan Soto's conclusion that the New York Mets have a better chance to win World Series titles than the Yankees. Soto left the Yankees as a free agent in December for a record $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets, turning down the Yankees' $760 million, 16-year offer. Judge says: "That's his opinion. He can say what he wants. I definitely disagree with him." The Yankees captain adds, "We're going to be battling back and forth for quite a few years."

Why can't Kyle Larson win the Daytona 500? Jeff Gordon believes defeats are 'getting in his head'

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Owen Larson called it when he said his dad wouldn't win the Daytona 500 because "he probably needs to try really hard because he's not good at superspeedway racing." The 10-year-old was right in his assessment. Kyle Larson can win just about anywhere in any type of car. But when it comes to Daytona and Talladega, NASCAR's 2021 Cup Series champion is a disaster. Larson dropped to 0 for 22 at Daytona International Speedway when he finished 20th in Sunday night's Daytona 500. Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon is a three-time Daytona 500 winner who believes the lack of success on superspeedways is "getting in his head."

Notre Dame moves up to No. 1 in AP poll for first time since 2019 after UCLA suffers 1st loss

Notre Dame is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 women's basketball poll for the first time since 2019. Texas moved up to second for its best ranking since 2017. UCLA had been No. 1 for 12 straight weeks after beating South Carolina in late November but the Bruins are now third in the rankings. USC moved up to fourth and UConn is fifth after routing then-No. 4 South Carolina.

Auburn stays at No. 1 in AP Top 25 for 6th straight week, Florida up to No. 2; Louisville returns

Auburn is No. 1 in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll for the sixth consecutive week. The Tigers claimed 59 of 60 first-place votes in the latest poll after beating then-No. 1 Alabama on the road. Florida claimed the other first-place vote and broke last week's tie with Duke to move up to second. The Southeastern Conference has a national-best nine ranked teams. No. 25 Louisville returned to the poll for the week's only new addition.

Yankees' Stanton hasn't swung bat in 3 or 4 weeks and is unsure of whether he can play in opener

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton hasn't swung a bat in three or four weeks and isn't sure whether he will be ready for opening day because of painful tendinitis in both elbows. Speaking before the team's first full-squad workout, Stanton revealed he played in pain for much of last season as he helped the Yankees reach the World Series for the first time since 2009. He wouldn't guess whether playing in the American League champion's March 27 opener against Milwaukee is realistic.

Tobe Awaka has a double-double as No. 19 Arizona snaps 2-game skid with a 74-67 win at Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) — Tobe Awaka had 14 points and 12 rebounds as No. 19 Arizona moved into second place alone in the Big 12 Conference with a 74-67 win at Baylor. Caleb Love and Henri Veesaar each had 13 points for the 18-8 Wildcats. Their back-to-back losses last week to Kansas State and No. 5 Houston dropped them six spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll earlier Monday. VJ Edgecombe scored 24 points for the 16-10 Bears. Cam Ward has answer for anyone who thinks he quit on Miami after breaking TD record in bowl game

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Cam Ward says not playing in the second half of Miami's bowl game was a predetermined decision and that he'd do it the same way again. The quarterback could be the first player taken in the NFL draft. He accepted the Davey O'Brien Award on Monday night as the top college quarterback. He hasn't decided if he will throw at the NFL combine next week. Ward was showered with online criticism suggesting that he quit on the Hurricanes after he didn't play the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl in December. They lost to Iowa State after he broke the NCAA Division I record for career touchdown passes.

D-backs, SS Geraldo Perdomo agree to $45 million, 4-year deal that starts in 2026, AP source says

Slick-fielding shortstop Geraldo Perdomo has agreed to a $45 million, four-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks that begins in 2026, a person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement hadn't been announced. The deal includes a club option for 2030. Perdomo will make $2.55 million this year after being eligible for salary arbitration for the first time. The 25-year-old was an All-Star in 2023, the same year he helped the Diamondbacks reach the World Series.

Devers insists he's the Red Sox's third baseman even with Bregman now on the team

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Red Sox's ballyhooed signing of Alex Bregman was met with considerable resistance Monday when Rafael Devers said he wouldn't cede third base. Devers is a three-time All-Star and has played the hot corner for Boston since 2017 and himself received a major deal just two years ago. The Red Sox signed Bregman on Saturday to a three-year, $120 million contract that includes a $5 million signing bonus. A two-time All-Star, Bregman has hit more than 20 home runs each of the past three seasons.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Salthawks did not have the anticipated let down that coaches fear after both teams historic wins over both #1 ranked Derby boys and girls teams last Friday. But on Monday Night at the Salthawk Activity Center, both Salthawk teams were red hot with the girls blitzing the Colts 69-18 while the Hutchinson boys were challenged in the first half, but came away with a 75-44 victory.

The Salthawks waisted no time in this one by jumping our to a 24-7 first quarter lead after tailing in the first couple of minutes 3-2 and 6-5, but after that, it was all Salthawks.

Hutch bolted to a 45-9 lead at the half and put up a season high 69 points for the game which included a running clock in the second half.

Four of the Salthawk starters had double-digit nights scoring with the seniors Grace Posh and Kaia Smith each scoring 20 points. Senior Lily Rodriquez followed with her best night of the season with 13, Junior Kohlbie Craft was sensational with 12 points and Junior Ava Krone chipped in 4 but owned the boards all night long.

The Salthawk defense shined by holding Colts to no field goals in both the second and fourth quarter, while only allowing two free throws in both quarters as well.

While it might have taken a little longer, the final results were the same as Hutchinson evened their season record to 8 and 8 with a 75-44 win over the Campus Colts to sweep the season series.

Campus pushed the Salthawks by only trailing by one point after the first quarter 17-16 then 35-32 at the half.

But, the second half was a totally different story as the Salthawks hit the boards hard out rebounding the Colts 38-17 which was the key in allowing the Salthawks to outscore the Colts 40 to 12 in the second half.

Seniors Terrell King and Taishaun Govain each had 17 point nights while super sophomore Lamar Govain scored 20 to lead the Salthawks. Jalen Crable and Levi Kepler each scored 8.

The Colts were led by Jaydon Starbird and Jagger Starbird each with 7 points.

Campus (3-16) travels to Maize on Wednesday and weather permitting, Hutchinson (8-8) has a make-up game at Salina South.

🏀 Salthawks soar past Campus; Girls win big, Boys have huge 2nd half

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ezra Ausar had 21 points and Lawson Lovering posted a double-double to help Utah hold on for a 74-69 victory over Kansas State on Monday night.

Ausar made 7 of 14 shots and all seven of his free throws, adding eight rebounds for the Utes (15-11, 7-8 Big 12 Conference). Lovering totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double this season. Gabe Madsen added 13 points.

Brendan Hausen scored 17 to lead the Wildcats (13-13, 7-8), who have lost two straight following a six-game win streak. Max Jones and Dug McDaniel both scored 13 with McDaniel adding six assists.

Lovering had nine points for Utah and Jones scored 10 for Kansas State in a first half that ended in a 32-32 tie.

Utah scored the first seven points of the second half to grab the lead. A Lovering dunk upped the Utes' advantage to 46-37 with 14:36 left to play. Madsen hit a 3-pointer to give Utah a 57-50 lead with 5:22 left, but Hausen hit a 3-pointer and two free throws as the Wildcats scored the next seven points to tie it with 3:25 remaining.

It was 59-all when Miro Little scored in the paint for Utah and Madsen followed with a 3-pointer. Jones had a layup with 15 seconds left to get the Wildcats within two, but the Utes made 3 of 4 foul shots in the final 12 seconds to wrap up the win.

Utah outrebounded K-State 51-28. The Utes had 21 rebounds at the offensive end, leading to 14 second-chance points.

Utah travels to play UCF on Sunday. Kansas State will host Arizona State on Sunday.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — JJ Quinerly scored 26 points, Jordan Harrison added 18 points and No. 17 West Virginia best 12th-ranked Kansas State 70-57 on Monday for its 15th straight victory at home.

It was a matchup of the best offense and the best defense in the Big 12 with Kansas State scoring 81.3 points per game and West Virginia allowing just 53.5 ppg.

West Virginia led 57-49 before holding Kansas State to 1-of-10 shooting over the next six minutes to pull away. The Mountaineers made seven straight shots to extend their lead to 70-51.

West Virginia forced Kansas State into a season-high 22 turnovers. The Wildcats shot 39.3% from the field, including 5 of 20 from the 3-point line.

Kyah Watson grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, to go with four assists, four steals and five points for West Virginia (21-5, 11-4). Jordan Thomas added 11 points.

Temira Poindexter led Kansas State (24-4, 12-3) with 17 points. Zyanna Walker added 12 points.

Harrison scored 10 points in the first half, Quinerly and Thomas each had nine points, and West Virginia led 36-30. Watson also grabbed 11 rebounds.

🏀 No. 17 West Virginia women beat No. 12 K-State

Notre Dame is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">Top 25 women’s basketball poll</a>, ascending to the top spot Monday for the first time since 2019.

The Fighting Irish replaced UCLA, which&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ucla-loses-26ffd59668faa75503a0c96f6868a77c">lost its first game</a>&nbsp;of the season last week, falling to rival USC, 71-60. Notre Dame was last No. 1 on Jan. 21, 2019.

“It’s definitely an honor to be the nation’s top team, but we are just focused on getting better every day,“ Notre Dame coach Niele Ivey said.

The Irish, who received 16 first-place votes from a 30-member national media panel, faced No. 11 Duke on Monday night.

Texas moved up to second for its best ranking since 2017. The Longhorns, who garnered eight first-place ballots, became the first team to beat three straight top 10 teams since 2004-05, according to ESPN, topping South Carolina, Kentucky and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lsu-texas-basketball-score-3a0ddc4a74c546f649e8647612735314">LSU</a>.

The Bruins had been No. 1 for 12 straight weeks after beating South Carolina in late November. UCLA fell to third and received the other six first-place votes.

USC moved up to fourth and UConn was fifth after routing then-No. 4 South Carolina&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/uconn-south-carolina-score-bc3d1da00964316965f84d897343997b">87-58</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. The Gamecocks, who saw their 71-game home winning streak end, fell to sixth. LSU and Ohio State were next.

North Carolina climbed up three spots to ninth for its highest ranking in three seasons after beating N.C. State&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nc-state-unc-womens-basketball-score-f85caaba12f7f663d87bde399473de5d">66-65</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. TCU was 10th.

Illinois re-entered the poll this week at No. 25 after beating Penn State and Nebraska. The Illini spent the first few weeks of the season ranked. Florida State fell out after losing to Louisville and edging Miami.

It was a rough week for Kentucky. One week after earning its best ranking in a decade, Kentucky fell six spots to 14th. The Wildcats lost games to Ole Miss and Texas before beating Georgia.

The Southeastern Conference still reigns with seven ranked teams. The Big Ten has six while the ACC and Big 12 each have five. The Big East has two.

With a month left to the start of the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee revealed the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-reveal-march-madness-a5e478ef0d3dd261acc23259ce782c07">top 16 teams</a>&nbsp;to that point Sunday. UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and Notre Dame were the one seeds. The reveal came before South Carolina’s loss.

No. 1 Notre Dame at No. 13 North Carolina State, Sunday. The Irish currently have a two-game lead in the ACC race over the Wolfpack. Five teams are within two games of second place.

No. 17 West Virginia at No. 10 TCU, Sunday. Two of the top teams in the Big 12 square off as the Horned Frogs hope to remain at top of the conference standings.

🏀 K-State women move up to No. 12 in latest AP Poll

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/auburn-alabama-t25-score-7e5522ca5233516cd4ea3eb78e524bc9">Auburn’s win at Alabama</a>&nbsp;assured the Tigers would keep the No. 1 ranking in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll</a>&nbsp;for a sixth consecutive week.

The Tigers (23-2) received 59 of 60 first-place votes in Monday’s poll, reclaiming nearly all the support lost&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-auburn-t25-score-4d46ac00c735b03b32e810b473b88d56">when they fell at home to Florida on Feb. 8</a>. Auburn had been the unanimous No. 1 for three straight weeks before that loss, but remained at the top last week despite seeing nearly half of those first-place votes go primarily to Alabama, with a few to Florida and Tennessee.

But the Tigers won Saturday in a 1-vs.-2 road matchup against the rival Crimson Tide, hours after the committee that will choose the 68-team field for the NCAA Tournament&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-tournament-preliminary-seeds-e9d1ee337bf3af70cff9c81856d878a4">put Auburn as its No. 1 overall seed in its preliminary rankings</a>.

The two teams to beat the Tigers sit right behind them. Florida and Duke were tied for third last week, and the Gators inched past the Blue Devils to break that tie and take the No. 2 spot while claiming the remaining first-place vote.

Alabama fell to No. 4, followed by Houston, Tennessee, Texas A&amp;M — with its highest ranking since December 2017 — Iowa State, Texas Tech and St. John’s to round out the top 10.

Of that group, the Red Raiders represented the only change from last week’s set of teams, climbing three spots to replace Purdue for their first top-10 appearance in three years. Grant McCasland’s squad, which has lost just twice since the start of 2025, was unranked until cracking the poll at No. 22 on Jan. 27.

Michigan had the week’s biggest jump among ranked teams, climbing eight spots to No. 12 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/michigan-purdue-score-8f94a3211b6c11b381ff2b0b9c9f720e">beating Purdue last week</a>&nbsp;and pushing its win streak to six games.

No. 15 Missouri jumped six spots, while No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 18 Clemson and No. 20 Maryland each rose five spots.

In all, 12 teams moved up from their position last week.

Memphis took the biggest tumble of the week, falling eight spots to No. 22 after its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/memphis-wichita-state-score-c19ec37b8498d55f615419d513de2e5f">overtime loss at Wichita State</a>&nbsp;ended an eight-game winning streak.

No. 13 Purdue, No. 19 Arizona and No. 23 Kansas — the preseason No. 1-ranked team — all fell six spots, while No. 24 Mississippi tumbled five.

No. 25 Louisville was the week’s lone new addition, returning to the poll for the second time after a two-week stint in January. First-year coach Pat Kelsey has guided the program to its first 20-win season since 2019-20, with the Cardinals having lost just once since mid-December.

Creighton (No. 24) fell out of the rankings for the second time this season. The Bluejays were ranked for the first four weeks, then returned last week for what turned out to be a one-week stay.

The Southeastern Conference had a national-best nine teams, including three of the top four and five of the top 10. The Big 12 and Big Ten each had five teams, though the Big 12 had three in the top 10 while the highest-ranked Big Ten team checked in at 11th.

The Atlantic Coast Conference had three, followed by the Big East with two and the American Athletic Conference with one.

🏀 KU drops to No. 23 in latest AP Top 25

TORONTO (AP) — The Delta Air Lines jet&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/delta-plane-flip-toronto-canada-airport-minneapolis-6d064bbc7a3bb8595183d6765d61a0ee">came down fast,</a>&nbsp;landing so hard that it lost its right wing, then burst into flames on a runway in Toronto. The aircraft slid to a stop, upside down, a trail of black smoke in its wake and passengers scrambling to escape the wreckage.

Miraculously, all 80 people on board the flight from Minneapolis to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/delta-toronto-airport-minneapolis-4ab235ef49b2d3757c9bd5fd8c6606ce">survived the crash Monday afternoon</a>. All but two of the 21 people injured on the flight have been released from hospitals, the airport CEO said Tuesday.

”How grateful we are there was no loss of life or life threatening injuries," Deborah Flint, CEO of Greater Toronto Airports Authority, said during a news conference. “The crew heroically led passengers to safety. I thank each and everyone one of those heroes.”

Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Communications between the tower and pilot were normal on approach and it’s not clear what went wrong when the plane touched down.
